ABOUT HALF NELSON:
“Half Nelson are a unique mix of musicians, from a wide variety of backgrounds. From New Orleans Jazz to Free Improvisation and all manner of music along the way. This combination has helped to forge a band dedicated to the era of jazz we love.
The 1920’s to the 40’s. Formed in September 2008 in Newcastle, Australia, by sister and brother Sheriden and Jason Nelson, Half Nelson is a fine collective of musicians.
“Half Nelson will take you on a midnight ride through the back alleys
of New Orleans and the smokey Jazz dives of 1920’s Harlem.
From gritty Billie Holiday, to the smooth styling of Ella Fitzgerald.
Add a shot of Louis Armstrong with a dash of Fats Waller
and you have the energetic cocktail that is Half Nelson.
Half Nelson deliver high energy, heartfelt jazz that is equally suited to a pub, jazz festival, sophisticated corporate function or an old basement speakeasy.
Dance up a storm or moan the blues away, but what ever you do, do it to Half Nelson”

Stag and Hunter

Matty T Wall

Saturday, 23 February 2019 8:00 pm

Tickets: ga $13.30

The blues is music that travelled on trains and steamboats from the Mississippi Delta to the neon streets of Memphis, Chicago and St. Louis. For MattyTWall - a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and bandleader – it is the supernatural sound that crossed the ocean to Perth, Australia to ignite his imagination and give power to his art.
A young man with an old soul: Matty is connected to music with a wealth of history as he distills a diversity of genres into his own blues-influenced soul, jazz and rock signature. His points of references are wide; he has studied and played a spectrum of styles including flamenco, swing jazz and funk, and he attests to a love for “heavier things” in his youth, bands like Metallica and Sepultura among them. But he remembers how the musicians he admired would honour the blues masters who came before them. And following the trail of Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn backwards, he was hooked. “I discovered Robert Johnson and he made the hair on the back of my neck stand up,” he remembers. “I got into the blues and have never gotten out of it.”
As a guitarist, Matty wrings raw emotions from single notes, stretching and bending the strings of a 61 Les Paul Custom into sounds both persuasive and human. While he is capable of blazingly fast leads, he also drives the beat with percussive punctuation and solid assurance.
With his vocals, he coils along the lines of the guitar. “I enjoy using my voice as another instrument,” he avows. He says that his songs are primarily riff-driven, and he compiles his musical notations into a catalog of 50-100 concepts that he can call up when lyrical inspiration strikes.
In performance, Matty fronts a band of seasoned pros to support his songs. His preferred configuration is a trio: where the guitar has plenty of air around it. “Sometimes playing with a bigger band is a strait jacket,” he observes. “With a trio I can go crazy.”
While the music that Matty plays has roots in the past, he is a very much an artist in the present. Through his reverence for historic musical forms, he is not emulating, but redefining these sounds, as he introduces classic genres to new listeners and invests them with his own trademark.
With plans to record in Australia and the U.S., and to hit the road touring, MattyTWall is headed toward the proverbial destination of the bluesmen: the crossroads. “I am like an elastic band pulled really tight, ready to go,” he says. “That’s how I feel about my music.

The Bushwackers

The Stag & Hunter Hotel (Mayfield, NSW)
Sunday, 24 February 2019 6:00 pm
4 days away

GA: $23.50

Performing since 1971 ….. and still going strong!
The Bushwackers are Australia’s best-known, best-loved bush band. In 2017 The Bushwackers are celebrating their 46 years of performance.  There’s been 95 members, 24 studio albums, four books, tours, awards and enough stories to fill a dozen books.
The Bushwackers play proudly Australian music, much of it based on the traditional folk and working songs from the early 20th century but have seamlessly incorporated celtic instrumentals and great contemporary original songs like Leave It In The Ground, Another trip To Bunnings, Dirt Under My Nails, Beneath The Southern Cross, Henry’s Men and the iconic  I Am Australian.
The Bushwackers continue to take their unique brand throughout the country and around the world bringing their spirit and energy to Festivals, clubs, pubs, schools and events.
Their Bushdances in the late 70’s and 80’s had thousands of people doing the Heel and Toe and Strip the Willow and there’s scarcely a school kid who didn’t learn a bit of bushdancing to the music of The Bushwackers.
The Bushwackers are led by the mighty Lagerphone of Dobe Newton and he’s joined onstage with a great team of musicians wielding fiddles, accordions, mandolins, guitars, bass, and drums. It’s a magic combination that has seen the band perform at festivals in Tamworth, Port Fairy, Canberra, Mackay, Port Arlington, Dorrigo, Brisbane and many other places in the last 20 years. Their shows are filled with enthusiastic old and newer fans who dance, sing and enjoy this unique Australian
iconic band.

Batterie
Thursday, 14 March 2019 7:00 PM

Ga: $15.30

This band, like the creatures they describe, have always been an evolving phenomenon, and each album has seen a significant leap into new unchartered territory, their unusual music vision prompting comparisons as disparate as "…the Kronos quartet, Roxy Music, Frank Zappa, Kate Bush...echoes of early Pink Floyd, Bowie and Radiohead.. Kraftwerk and Björk" (R2 Magazine/ Reuters).
Their is a beautifully orchestrated ecosystem, experimental in parts but still accessible, fusing rich vocal harmonies, persuasive melodies, big riffs, detailed arrangements and sharp songcraft to make a genre-defying album, which explores the moving space between electronic and acoustic; DIY and big production.
Incurably ambitious, this is a band that has always put an adventurous approach to Art at the heart of their craft.

Lachy Doley ALBUM LAUNCH at Lizottes. It's 2 years since we've played near Newy or Central Coast.

It's been over 2 years in the making but 'MAKE OR BREAK' is finally done. After the last album LOVELIGHT I wasn't sure if I had it in me to make another seeing that since 2011 I'd somehow managed to produce an album every 1.5 years. Well this one has taken over 2 years.........but IT'S UNREAL and worth the wait. If you've ever enjoyed a Lachy Doley Album before then this will cause hysteria and euphoria :-)
MARCH 6th..... we'll be launching this baby at the LIZOTTES in Lambton. I'll have the Hammond C3, The Whammy Clav, Jackie Barnes on Drums, Joel Burton on Bass and maybe a special guest or 2.
It'll be our only 2019 show at Lizottes so if you were ever gonna come to a Lachy Doley Group gig. Make it this one.
And if you really feel like helping. Invite your friends on facebook, email, instagram and make a Album Launch party. Such a beautiful venue and Brian and the crew make such delicious food

PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS
AUGIE MARCH
BATTS
MAGPIE DIARIES
DAVE
ALLENSWORTH (USA)
THEN JOLENE
Joining the already robust line-up is Perth powerhouse
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, who are on the brink of exploding around the world. With two monstrous odysseys under their belt, High Visceral Pt. 1and High Visceral Pt. 2, this four-piece create scintillating progressive rock that shifts from Biblical-sized riffs to dreamy soundscapes in the blink of an eye.
Augie March have earned their place amongst the country’s most revered acts. They returned to the spotlight this year with new record Bootikins, their first in four years, reminding us of their penchant for wrenching melodies and lyrical beauty. The brainchild of singer-songwriter Glenn Richards, Augie March will finally make their Dashville debut in 2019 – expect a tear-filled singalong.
Melbourne-based space enthusiast BATTS creates a blend of dream pop, folk and rock. BATTS is the moniker by which Tanya Batts delivers mesmerising and melancholic music akin to such musical influences as Sigur Rós, Bon Iver and Stevie Nicks.
Magpie Diaries craft soulful roots country music, reminiscent of the swing of the late ‘60s. They dropped their impressive debut record, Sanctuary, this year and we can’t wait to welcome them back to the Dashville arena.
We also welcome Newcastle garage punk upstarts dave, who will be fresh from recording their debut record in America with the legendary Steve Albini (Nirvana's In Utero). We’ve no doubt these guys are destined for big things and we can’t wait to welcome them along to The Gum Ball.
From the Californian coast please enter Allensworth led by Jamie Allensworth, a soulful man with a golden set of tonsils. His approach pays tributes to some of soul's greatest, all the while staying true to his unique craft of songwriting.
From the sunny NSW coastal township of Woolgoolga comes Then Jolene, an eight-piece family band who play a raucous brand of swampy bluegrass-inspired folk. At PigSty In July earlier this year they brought the house down and we’re sure they’ll do it again.

Gary Clark Jr
Thu 18 Apr
The GRAMMY® Award-winning maverick channels his signature sense of soul from the crossroads of rock ‘n’ roll, blues, jazz, hip-hop, reggae and punk. Clark’s most accomplished songwriting and virtuosic performances to date; This Land album delivers socially relevant, transcendentally ambitious, and musically rich declaration as unapologetic, undeniable, and unique as he is.
Clark emerges with a body of work that is dynamic in every sense, embodying an ever-evolving sound that transformed him into an artistic force anointed by everyone from President Barack Obama to the late Prince.
Texas' sensational multi-genre, Grammy Award-winning artist is bringing his signature sounds to Australia this coming April.
Declared ‘Best Young Gun’ by Rolling Stone magazine, Gary Clark Jr. began his musical career playing guitar at the age of 12 and doing small gigs in his teens. His career took off in 2005 with the release of his album ‘Tribute’. Since then Clark has produced four studio albums and two live albums and was selected by none other than Eric Clapton to perform at the Crossroads Guitar Festival and once more at his 50th anniversary shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City. His song 'Please Come Home' won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B performance.
He's been heralded as a rare guitar virtuoso and as one of the most acclaimed bluesmen of his generation, collaborating and performing with a myriad of today's greatest musical artists including The Rolling Stones, Beyoncé, Foo Fighters, Eric Clapton, Nas, and Booker T Jones. His album ‘Live North America 2016’ was described as being driven by a pure, soulful and devotional spirit – likely an understatement, given his electrifying live performances.

Bluesfest 4th Announcement

Just when you thought we had forgotten you – and Christmas was going to be bleak and lean – BLUESFEST brings you a World Premiere Announcement.
Bluesfest is the first date in the world to be announced for the re-united SABOTEURS.
AND … This will be the first time ever that THE SABOTEURS have played in Australia.
THE SABOTEURS (known outside of Australia as THE RACONTEURS) is made up of four friends who got together in Detroit way back in 2005.  Jack White, Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, hailed from other influential bands of the time – and together released two albums, ‘Broken Boy Soldiers’ (2006) and the Grammy-Award winning ‘Consolers Of The Lonely’ (2008), spawning the singles: ‘Steady As She Goes’, ‘Salute Your Solution’, ‘Many Shades Of Black’  and ‘Consoler Of The Lonely’ .
THE SABOTEURS have graced the prestigious stages of the Montreux Jazz Festival, Coachella, Glastonbury, Austin City Limits and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
Now they come to Australia for the very first time and we are delighted they have chosen to help us celebrate our 30th Anniversary by closing Bluesfest on Easter Monday.
For blues patrons, check out this clip for a performer at Byron in 2019

A HUGE EXHIBITION OF CHINA'S TERRACOTTA WARRIORS IS COMING TO THE NGV

It's one of two immersive exhibitions focusing on ancient and modern Chinese art heading to the Victorian gallery next winter.
Back in 1982, Melbourne played host to one of China's most important ancient artworks: a collection of statues known as The Terracotta Army. Crafted between 221–206 BCE and first discovered in the Shaanxi province in 1974, it made its international debut at the National Gallery of Victoria — and now, 37 years later, it's returning for the NGV's 2019 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series.
Dubbed Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality, the five-month exhibition will feature eight warrior figures and two life-size horses from The Terracotta Army, alongside two half-size replica bronze chariots that are each drawn by four horses. They were created during the reign of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang and were buried near his tomb more than 2200 years ago. The pieces coming to Melbourne only represent a fraction of the entire work, which numbers more than 8000 figures in total.
If you're wondering how big of a deal the statues are, the answer is very. The Terracotta Army is considered one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century and has also been described as the 'Eighth' Wonder of the World. Displaying at the NGV from May 24 to October 13, 2019, the selected pieces will be accompanied by more than 150 other ancient Chinese treasures sourced from museums and Shaanxi archaeological sites. Expect to rove your eyes over priceless gold, jade and bronze artefacts that date back more than 3000 years, charting China's artistry across the country's formative period.
Looking to the present as well as the past, the NGV's winter season will also celebrate acclaimed Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang. His work is no stranger to Australia — in 2014, Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art hosted its own showcase — however, his Melbourne exhibition will feature all new pieces. With Cai known for his large-scale installations, The Transient Landscapewill include 10,000 porcelain birds suspended in a spiral formation, in an artwork that links to The Terracotta Army. Specifically, it'll create a 3D version of a calligraphic drawing that depicts Mount Li, which is where Qin Shi Huang and his terracotta warriors were buried.
Another of Cai's new works will feature a porcelain sculpture of peonies placed in the middle of a 360-degree gunpowder, with his entire show taking inspiration from Chinese culture and philosophy. The world-renowned talent will also help design Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality, making the two concurrent exhibitions as immersive as possible.
