NEWCASTLE MUSIC ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT 24MAY2019

From Richard in Review: Last Sunday was so great  Mal Eastick was just brilliant – awesome blues guitarist. Road Hogs were great – and Melbourne St were so good at the Catho (great venue with bush setting background).
This weekend has the Blues, Beers and BBQ at Belmont foreshore - $50 for some great bands from 5 to 11pm with beers and food.
There is also the Comedy Festival and French Film Festival.
Fri – Viagro, Galapagos Duck or Bad Dad Orchestra – such a range of music
Sat – Blues, Beers & BBQ at Belmont, Blues Bombers, Brien McVernon & the Rockets
Sun – Eyre’n’ The Blues, Rattlesnakes, Z Star Trinity, Canned Heat & Chris Cain – local, national and international talent all on one day.
There is far too much on this weekend, too much to see and do. Good luck.

Adamstown Arts presents NEVE – NOBEL

Wednesday 12 June at Adamstown Uniting Church 7.30pm.
Adamstown Arts presents NEVE – NOBEL, a conversation in contemporary European jazz. This brilliant duo, Jef Neve (piano – Belgium) and Teus Nobel (trumpet/flugelhorn – The Netherlands), perform a mix of their own lyrical compositions and a selection of jazz standards from, among others, Charlie Parker and Chet Baker, punctuated with stories, musical challenges and humour.
Seriously good music and a fun experience for all. Don’t miss this duos one Newcastle concert!
Wednesday 12 June at Adamstown Uniting Church 7.30pm.
Purchase tickets online at trybooking. ref: BBLRX .$30 / Concession $25

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

JEF NEVE (BELGIUM)

Pianist Jef Neve is internationally acclaimed across pop, classical and jazz music. Over a fifteen-year career, composition credits include a string of contemporary jazz albums, award winning movie and TV series soundtrack orchestrations and piano concertos.
Jef, with his trio, first performed at the Adamstown Uniting Church in 2010, to a standing ovation. He returned in 2013 for a solo performance on the Stuart and Sons piano. Described by Stuart and Sons founder and piano manufacturer, Wayne Stuart, as “The greatest concert of my life – so far”

TEUS NOBEL (THE NETHERLANDS)

Horn player, Teus Nobel, was ”Radio 6 Soul and Jazz Talent” 2012 and won the 2015 Laren Jazz Award. He has been a soloist with the Dutch Royal Air Force Orchestra since 2010. As band leader/composer, Teus has performed across twenty countries and as section-player in over fifteen musical productions in the Netherlands and Belgium. Since 2012 has released four albums.
“Tues Nobel is one of those once-in-a-generation guys that brings it all to the table” Christian Scott (US)
“The future of jazz has risen.” Jazzism

THE DUO

Neve and Nobel began their creative musical journey together during production of Jef’s 2017 album, “Spirit Control”. A subsequent request to perform as a duo for a private function was more than enough to seal the duo deal.
June 2019 sees the duo performing in Melbourne, Canberra (Bungendore), Newcastle, Sydney and Brisbane.
The duo-project presents a mix of compositions by themselves, as well as some cool jazz standards, alternated with stories and chats by those two funny and verbally strong gentlemen. They never stop to challenge and tease each other on stage, so much fun to watch and listen to!

Belmont Beers, Blues & BBQ

Saturday 25 May, 5-11pm
Belmont South Foreshore
Join us on the foreshore for a celebration of craft beer, live music and succulent barbecue as we team up with brewers and food vendors from the Hunter and beyond. Sample barbecue cuisine from around the world, meet the brewers, and kick back with mates to the smooth sounds of live blues.
The bill is led by seminal outfit the Bondi Cigars, who have been plying their trade around Australian traps since 1989, and blues powerhouse Kevin Borich who has become one of the most respected guitar slingers on the circuit, thanks to his work in the likes of The Kevin Borich Express, The La De Das and hard rockers The Party Boys.
The line-up will be rounded out by local hero and DV8 stalwart Greg Bryce, who will have the crowd on their feet with the Greg Bryce Blues Band, and fellow Novocastrian bluesmeisters Catfish Soup.
Aside from some world-class tunes, the festival will also feature a slew of cuisine from around the world, lashings of the best craft beer on the market – all while drinking in the tranquil surrounds of the shores of Lake Macquarie.
“Nothing beats barbecue, cold beer and great music. Combined with the gorgeous foreshore of Lake Macquarie, we are sure our first Belmont, Beers Blues and BBQ event will be a huge success,” Lake Macquarie Council’s manager of arts, culture and tourism Jacqui Hemsley said.
“Getting together to experience well-known Australian blues musicians, and enjoy craft breweries and delicious food from some of the best regional barbecue chefs is what living in Lake Macquarie is all about – having fun and loving life.”
If the beers, blues and BBQ isn’t enough to satiate your desire for a banging time, the festival will also feature eye catching illumination sculptures, roving performance artists and opportunities to meet some of the bbq chefs to pick up some grill tips.
What more could you want?
The Belmont Beers, Blues and BBQ Festival is on at South Belmont Foreshore on Saturday 25 May from 5pm-11pm.
Tickets are $50pp (+ booking fee) which also includes two beer tastings, two food tastings and reusable souvenir cup.

This first joint exhibition by Vlasé and Judi Nikoleski has the common theme of landscape. The sculpture and textiles in Landscape Metaphors are visual and physical metaphors that open a dialogue with the viewer on aspects of the Australian landscape. Vlasé's architectural forms examine the conflict between human activities, climate change and our environment using conventional materials such as bronze, stainless steel, aluminium and sandstone. Judi uses human rubbish as the underlying imagery for silk screened and quilted, textured wall hangings which depict aspects of our relationship with our unique country.
The exhibition Landscape Metaphors continues until Sunday June 9. For more information about the show contact the gallery.

Journey to abstraction leads to exhibition
Nature’s Extraction exhibition runs from 12 June to 7 July, with the opening from 6 to 8pm on 13 June 2019
Minute details in the natural world have inspired a fascinating exhibition by textile artist Lois Parish Evans, opening at Newcastle’s Timeless Textiles Gallery in JuneIn the Nature’s Abstraction exhibition, Parish Evans’ work uses nature as the starting point for her journey into abstraction.
“The minutiae of nature has long been a source of interest and inspiration,” she said. “ The shape of a leaf, the vibrant colour of a flower, an autumn leaf, or the textural foam on a wave. All these and so much more inspire my creativity.”
The artist is constantly seeking to find the extraordinary within the ordinary.
"I love 'seeing'  and having my interest piqued, stimulated, inspired by those elements in the natural world. I look at something and immediately see that for me it is about line, or shape or colour".  she says. “The ordinary things, which are often fleeting and missed if not quickly captured.”
Over time Parish Evans has moved through stylisation of what she sees in the natural world to become more abstracted. While the initial element that has inspired the artist is often still recognisable, it has been through a process of abstraction. The image is deconstructed to its essence and then expanded out again in a process of reconstruction, which sometimes adds a touch of mystery. Is it a flower, a chrysallis? Is it viewed through a microscope? Or perhaps it is an entirely new world, species or cosmos?
“My process is a personal response to the possibility of something new and different, a shift in the process of thinking and creating,” Parish Evans explains.
This exhibition records her personal journey to abstraction. It records her unique response to the natural world. Moving towards abstraction has brought creative freedom for this artist.
“It allows me to let go of control and to trust internal cues, which come from years of working with the elements of design,” she explains. “The process becomes a dialogue between creation and creator. It is the result of responsive interaction with the unfolding story of the work.”

Soul Movers
9:00pm - 12:30am Soul Movers
You want a word to describe the Soul Movers? How about electric.
The Soul Movers have returned from playing shows from LA to NYC at the same time recording a sizzling new album at many of the legendary studios of the South: Sun & Royal Studios in Memphis and FAME and Muscle Shoals Studios in Alamaba. With their sonic pilgrimage now recorded - visually and sonically.
The Soul Movers return home with bad road food stories, hotel hi-jinks and long roads full of new material which they can't wait to share in live shows with their fans back home.
The Soul Movers delved deep into their musical DNA to create an album that spans not only the spectrum of their musical influences but attempts to do justice to their deep passion for soul, the many that came before them, and how those voices and sounds have influenced them in such personal and lasting ways. The US live shows and recording trip really was a musical identity search and pilgrimage of epic proportions! With a musical spectrum reaching over Soul and Pop, Blues and Rock - the band travelled from LA to NY finding legends to collaborate and record with, developing their talents & abilities, and making their wildest music-making dreams come true.
Originally formed by Lizzie, (with Deniz Tek) ARIA Hall of Famer and legendary guitarist Murray Cook joining Lizzie at the helm in 2015. The group has evolved over the years, with the line-up now including original bass player Andy Newman with well-known drummers Stu Wilson, Calvin Welsch and Glenn Abbott joining the magical keys-man Marko Simec for a national album release in 2019.

MINNIE MARKS & FRANK SULTANA

MINNIE MARKS
With an insane talent that’s out of control playing what she calls dirty sweet rock & roll this young singer/songwriter/guitarist/multi instrumentalist has been eating up girl bands since 1994.
Minnie Marks is not just some blazingly electrified acoustic guitar playing freak of nature, but also a rare and triple threat: Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Be warned, her show will take you on a dizzying, riff rock rollercoaster ride with songs written over the past years of her musical journey around the world.
This bombshell explodes on stage pushing the limits of her guitar, vocals and performance, kicking arse and playing to packed out shows, leaving little doubt everybody is touting her as ‘the next big thing’.
Frank Sultana
A late-night set in an inner-city bar, or a festival stage, solo or fronting his band, chances are that this ‘new’ bluesman has played somewhere in your neck of the woods in the last 5 years.
Frank Sultana tells stories of loss, betrayal and revenge, set in imaginary backwater towns inhabited by strangely likeable yet shady characters. He delivers his songs with dark hypnotic guitar parts that are carefully layered with his raw whiskey drenched voice.
If you like your music raw and real, dark and uplifting, then check out Frank Sultana. You may have found your new favourite artist.

LEE COULTER & DIXIE MAXWELL

Tickets: $16.85

When you start something new, you don’t expect success at first attempt. But when unsigned singer-songwriters Lee Coulter & Dixie Maxwell teamed up for the first time, their single “We You Me” shot to the top of the itunes singles chart in Australia and New Zealand.
It was no accident. “Overnight success” doesn’t apply when there are decades of paying dues between the two of them. As two seasoned singer songwriters - Coulter originally from Brisbane, Australia and Maxwell from San Diego, CA (with a year stint in the Nashville scene) - they have quietly honed their crafts in the background of cafes, bars and restaurants across the USA.
On his own, Coulter and his soulful folk songs were deemed the “discovery of 2011” by Sirius XM’s Coffee House channel. He's opened for iconic artists such as Tom Jones and the late Chuck Berry, and shared the stage with Jason Mraz. Martin Sexton, who John Mayer calls “one of the most treasured singer-songwriters I've ever heard in my life,” even stated that “the world needs more Lee Coulter songs.”
On her own, Maxwell, with her vulnerable songwriting and distinctly soft yet magnetic delivery, wins you over from the very first note by empowering her audience to listen to their own inner voice as she explores themes of hope, longing and freedom. She has had songs placed in major motion pictures and opened for artists such as Andy Grammar.
Together, their sound is exponential. It’s like modern indie-folk meets a classic movie. Encouraged by this fact, the success of their first single and a Kickstarter that reached their goal in just 2 days, they have now teamed up for a full duo album as “Lee Coulter & Dixie Maxwell,” to be released in late May this year, and will be touring Australia to play both solo and duo sets for their new fans down under.

MARZ

Smokey and evocative, MARZ's voice carries an emotional weight which elevates listeners to a place of escape and serenity but with visceral delivery.
With music dripping in white hot urgency, MARZ to delivers his first single, 'The Master's Slave'. Summoning the energy and dark secrets of  the inner city with Australian rock influences harking back to the 70s and 80's, Marz' music is exciting and dangerous. Delivering a taut, focused and sinewy rock sound devoid of excess, MARZ draws on rock royalty like The Angels and AC/DC but tempers this with melodic flourishes harking back to the masters of 60s folk and with Jeff Buckley-esque vocal comparison. Rock is back. Marz is leading the charge.
Stealing the jagged hooks of rock, indie and the cheap thrill of pop, Marz meditates on ideas as varied as the paranoia of the city and also the distance that can develop between people that were once very close. All the while delivering these themes with chorus's that lift and harmonies that echo back to the masters of folk.

Bravo Victor

June 11th, 8pm

Comprising of Bassist Jonathon Burgess and vocalist Sophie Aked. Both musicians have a very different approach to writing and listing to music, which stems from their different musical backgrounds; Jono’s in Jazz and Sophie’s in Classical and pop music.

Bravo Victor’s sound could be described as a ‘melting pot’ of these genre’s harmonic language and performance practices. Through their strengths and passions, Sophie’s for poetry and melody and Jono’s for the intricate inner workings of harmony, complex and striking original music has been created."

A HUGE EXHIBITION OF CHINA'S TERRACOTTA WARRIORS IS COMING TO THE NGV

It's one of two immersive exhibitions focusing on ancient and modern Chinese art heading to the Victorian gallery next winter.
Back in 1982, Melbourne played host to one of China's most important ancient artworks: a collection of statues known as The Terracotta Army. Crafted between 221–206 BCE and first discovered in the Shaanxi province in 1974, it made its international debut at the National Gallery of Victoria — and now, 37 years later, it's returning for the NGV's 2019 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series.
Dubbed Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality, the five-month exhibition will feature eight warrior figures and two life-size horses from The Terracotta Army, alongside two half-size replica bronze chariots that are each drawn by four horses. They were created during the reign of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang and were buried near his tomb more than 2200 years ago. The pieces coming to Melbourne only represent a fraction of the entire work, which numbers more than 8000 figures in total.
If you're wondering how big of a deal the statues are, the answer is very. The Terracotta Army is considered one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century and has also been described as the 'Eighth' Wonder of the World. Displaying at the NGV from May 24 to October 13, 2019, the selected pieces will be accompanied by more than 150 other ancient Chinese treasures sourced from museums and Shaanxi archaeological sites. Expect to rove your eyes over priceless gold, jade and bronze artefacts that date back more than 3000 years, charting China's artistry across the country's formative period.
Looking to the present as well as the past, the NGV's winter season will also celebrate acclaimed Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang. His work is no stranger to Australia — in 2014,Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art hosted its own showcase — however, his Melbourne exhibition will feature all new pieces. With Cai known for his large-scale installations, The Transient Landscapewill include 10,000 porcelain birds suspended in a spiral formation, in an artwork that links to The Terracotta Army. Specifically, it'll create a 3D version of a calligraphic drawing that depicts Mount Li, which is where Qin Shi Huang and his terracotta warriors were buried.
Another of Cai's new works will feature a porcelain sculpture of peonies placed in the middle of a 360-degree gunpowder, with his entire show taking inspiration from Chinese culture and philosophy. The world-renowned talent will also help design Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality, making the two concurrent exhibitions as immersive as possible.
'Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality' and 'Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape' will exhibit as part of the NGV International's Melbourne Winter Masterpieces presentation, running from May 24 to October 13, 2019. For further details or to buy tickets, visit the NGV website.

An evening with one of music’s true icons
In an event not to be missed, the legendary Herbie Hancock performs in the Concert Hall for one night only, drawing upon his innovative, massively influential six decade career of jazz, fusion, funk, electro, hip-hop and beyond.
Few artists exert as much influence over the modern music landscape as Hancock. The Chicago-born, 14 time Grammy-winner’s illustrious career transcends both genre and era, from Blue Note Records prodigy and key member of the Miles Davis Quintet – which redefined the shape of contemporary jazz – to his ’70s smash jazz-funk crossover with the Headhunters, and as a true pioneer and originator of electro that made him a hero of successive generations.
Among Hancock’s innumerable contributions: his ’60s hits “Watermelon Man” and “Cantaloupe Island”, classic Blue Note albums Maiden Voyage and Speak Like A Child, playing on Miles Davis’s pioneering In a Silent Way, 1973’s funk gem Head Hunters, the ’80s electro smash “Rockit”, his Oscar-winning score for Round Midnight and soundtrack to Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-up, and his 2007 record River: The Joni Letters, awarded the Grammy for Album of the Year. And in 2011, Hancock was designated a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. Experience the musical legend who has collaborated with everyone from Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter to Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell and Kendrick Lamar.
