NEWCASTLE GIG ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT 23MAR18

Had a high time at Blue Mountains Music Festival with great company over the three days. Traditionally this festival at its altitude is very cold with always the possibility of rain - not this year. Amazing warm and sunny weather made for a fabulous festival and atmosphere. New discoveries and old favourites like Steve Poltz and also Harry Manx with a string ensemble from Sydney. Feature artist Kate Miller-Heidke was outstanding musically.
Check out these albums by songwriters

"WATERLINE"
PHIL STALLARD
OPENING FRIDAY 6 APRIL 6 - 8PM
CONTINUES TO 30 APRIL 2018
Cooks Hill Galleries (CHG) presents ‘Phil Stallard - Waterline’.
“For most of his career as a painter, Philip Stallard has been drawn to the theme of water. Stallard's childhood was spent around the Hawkesbury River. Here, he enjoyed seeking out remote shelves of the orange-red Hawkesbury sandstone, and gazing down on the river - sometimes still and glistening, sometimes wind-ruffled, and occasionally dour and agitated. He relished the eventful junctions where river meets sky. Or where the pulsing river meets the lush but sometimes fire-ravaged bushland.” - Peter Pinson OAM
On the evening; Meet the artist, browse, buy, enjoy a wine and catch up with friends. Official opening and presentation at 6.40pm.

Karuah Bluegrass Music Festival | Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th March

The Karuah Bluegrass Festival is a small yet popular festival held in Karuah, Port Stephens with a solid reputation for Bluegrass music. With past artists such as Catherine Britt, Bluestone Junction and Bill Chambers, the festival seems 9 years young. A lack of sponsorship however has unfortunately left organisers short this year, with the usual May event moved to this month, in an effort to celebrate their 10th birthday.
Despite that, this festival will be a great place where musicians, residents and music lovers can gather to enjoy acoustic music, indulge, learn musical skills and enjoy a weekend of performances. This year the festival will feature more of the best of Australian Bluegrass including The Mid North, Gleny Rae Virus Bluegrass Explosion and High & Lonesome plus more. Alongside the musical talent, there will also be a kids zone with musical activities, a circus workshop, and of course food stalls.
Karuah is beautifully set up with hotels and caravan parks and ample camping space and facilities aplenty - making the 50km trip from Newcastle a great weekend away for all. The festival is free entry this time around and will be staged from Longworth Park (main event Saturday) plus other local locations including the Karuah RSL and Anglican Church - keep an eye on their facebook page for more announcements.

Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival | Friday 23rd - Sunday 25th March

No nostalgia festival is complete without a classic car and hot rod 'Show and Shine', rock n roll dance demonstrations, feature bands, talent quests, fashion parades and best dressed competitions, not to mention over 150 retro markets stalls and food vans! Loads of free entertainment and a side show alley will keep everyone busy - be sure not to miss the family fun night on Friday 23rd (5pm - 8pm, Rotary Park). Ticketed events include a Retro High Tea, the Burlesque Idol Australia 2018 Grand Finale, a High School Prom Dinner Dance plus more! The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra

A tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
Opera House Concert Hall
Thursday 2 August
The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra, directed by veteran trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, features a peerless array of 18 instrumentalists together with special guest vocalist, the remarkable Carmen Bradford, hired by Basie himself.
This special event will be the Orchestra’s tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. The Basie Band had a strong history with both artists and their reverence for them will shine through in this homage to these two greats of jazz.
The living embodiment of swing, one of the most elegant and irresistible sounds that ever shook the western world, The Legendary Count BasieOrchestra have announced they will tour Australia and New Zealand in July/August 2018.
Directed by veteran trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, the 18-piece Count Basie Orchestra features a peerless array of instrumentalists with combined credentials that have topped the upper echelons of the international jazz world for decades.
From Billie Holiday to Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra to Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan to Ella Fitzgerald, the Count Basie Orchestra has provided the supremely distinctive sound and swing behind some of the greatest singers of the modern age.
Current members still include trombonist Clarence Banks, hired all those years ago by Basie himself, as well as former members of Stan Kenton’s, Benny Goodman’s and Lionel Hampton's ensembles.
Special guest vocalist is the remarkable Carmen Bradford, who has performed with artists including Tony Bennett, James Brown, Wynton Marsalis, Frank Sinatra and George Benson. Count Basie heard Bradford sing in the early eighties and immediately hired her as vocalist for his Orchestra, a role she has continued in to this day.
A special feature this tour will be the Orchestra’s tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald and the immortal Louis Armstrong. The Basie Band had a strong history with both artists and their reverence for them will shine through in this homage to these two greats of jazz.
The tradition of excellence has continued beyond the Count's passing in 1984 to make the Orchestra a permanent fixture in Down Beat and Jazz Times polls throughout the '80s and '90s. The latest of a total 18 Grammy Awards was bestowed as recently as their Count Plays Duke album of '99.
Simply put, the Count Basie Orchestra is the real deal, a who’s who of the best swing players the world has to offer. For Australian and New Zealand audiences, this tour is a very special occasion and a rare chance to see a truly elite jazz ensemble staged in some of our most prestigious venues. Don't miss these historic concerts.

Darby Street Live

Sat 24 March
A micro music festival is coming to Darby Street to showcase local talent in Newcastle.
Launched at ABICUS on Darby Street on Tuesday 6 March, Lord Mayor of Newcastle Nuatali Nelmes said that the businesses along Darby Street combined with the organisers of the Tip Jar competition who’d unearthed a lot of talent in Newcastle and they wanted to show off that talent. “When you’ve got all the bars, restaurants, shops and cafes along Darby Street a micro music festival just makes sense.”
“We’re pushing really hard to protect the live music scene in Newcastle and we applied to the NSW Government’s Office of Live Music for a grant and were successful,” Nuatali said.
“We’re really excited about this microfestival. We’re uncovering local talent as well as activating this great precinct that is Darby Street.
Kicking off at 2pm, venues include fashion and retail stores: ABICUS, Ramjet and Betty Mim, Cooks Hill Books & Records, food spots: Monella Gelato Bar, Natural Tucker and bars: 5 Sawyers and The Hop Factory.
The Laneway between Jean Bas and Canton Story will also come alive with live music.
“On Saturday 24 of March you can get ice cream from Monella and listen to live music – what’s not to love about that?” Nuatali added.
Featured musicians include No-Fi collective, NIMA, Boys Don’t Cry and Sad Grrls Club, along with joint Tip Jar Winner Paris Grace who performed at the launch event today.
DJs, a harpist, electro, jazz, pop, indie rock, surf punk… you name a musical genre – it’s probably represented in the more than 25 acts already on the list.
Confirmed artists include:
Paris Grace, Gillian Redmond, Jye Sharp, FRITZ, Benn Allsop, E4444E, Skivvy Season, Dawn Laird, Talaki, Bravo Victor, Jacquie Lomas, Eastside Grammar, Jackets, Pep-C, Cygan Groove, Banjo Beats, Amos & Emily, Cherry Stain, Shrimp, Looseleaf IV, Wavevom, Milkmans Daughter, Georgie Rose.  DJs Mac Da Villain, Lowblow and Pureblonde.

The Lock Up

Join us for the opening of justiceINjustice, a collaborative exhibition featuring seven contemporary Australian artists and three lawyers
JUSTICEINJUSTICE
OPENING 6PM FRIDAY 23 MARCH 2018
Join us for the opening of justiceINjustice, a collaborative exhibition featuring seven contemporary Australian artists and three lawyers. This incredible project explores several high profile criminal cases that underline issues of injustice and marginalisation through a unique process of research and collaborative conversation between the artists and lawyers who have been directly involved with the particular case each artist is addressing.
This significant project has been developed with lawyers Karen Wells, Ray Watterson and Robert Cavanagh. Cavanagh and Watterson are part of the co-founding team of the internationally acclaimed University of Newcastle Legal Centre, and are highly regarded for their public interest advocacy work. Wells developed her approach to the practice of law through working on public interest cases whilst a student at the Legal Centre.
Curated by artist and criminologist Carolyn McKay (University of Sydney Law School) in collaboration with The Lock-Up, the exhibition features artists Corinne Brittain, Rob Cleworth, Blak Douglas, John A Douglas, Leah Emery, Lezlie Tilley and Richard Lewer. Project Creative Producer, Jessi England.
TRAFFIC ACCESS: If you're unsure about coming into Newcastle due to current traffic conditions, we find that coming in via the foreshore or The Hill is much easier and avoids congestion on King Street. Once you get into town there is plenty of parking.

The Merewether Fats’ Blues Jam
Thursday | 7pm | Free Admission
The Merewether Fats’ Blues Jam has been running on the first Thursday of each month for over 10 years. The night is a celebration of Blues, roots and folk musical styles.
Founded by Mark ‘Merewether Fats’ Salter the blues jam has become a hub for the music community, young, young at heart, musicians of all levels and most importantly music fans. It’s strictly blues music and Fats had very stringent guidelines on what blues is. The main condition is that it came from the soul of the player.
The night usually kicks off at 7:30pm with an introductory set from Fat’s house band to set the tone. From there it’s open to all for about 3 songs at a time. We try to cultivate a wide variety of artists to play acoustic and delta styles, Chicago shuffles, Detroit boogies, Bo Diddley rhythms and it just gets deeper.
Jammers can play solo, duo or as an ensemble. They can borrow the house band and however, there’s plenty of great players to to pick up a band on the night. Singers, harmonica players, keyboardists, drummers, bass players, guitar players… even banjo players. We get first time performers and seasoned veterans, sometimes on stage at the same time sharing a passion for blues.
Mark ‘Merewether Fats’ Salter passed away in 2016 and the community will continue to champion this part of his legacy in classic blues brothers style. To make sure it’s accessible to future generations and get people hooked on the rhythm of the human condition. As Fats would always say ‘…blues is sad music that makes you feel good.’ By the way, no pedals, bring your instrument and a lead (tuner helps). Amps and kit on stage, say g’day to the guys in the house band on the night to get your name on the run sheet.”

Luke’s almost fixed it… his life that is. He now has a real, actual girlfriend – something he previously thought impossible because of both his face and personality. With his new found personal security, he’s now got time to worry about all the stuff that is actually worth worrying about. Like, what is actually going on in the world? And, what happens when his girlfriend realises she’s made a mistake, leaves, and tells other people not to date him?
Since Luke McGregor’s breakthrough 2014 stand-up show I Worry That I Worry Too Much, things have improved out of sight for Australia’s favourite awkward, obsessive-compulsive comedian.
He has become a genuine star of the small screen by way of his very own, uncomfortably illuminating documentary series for the ABC, Luke Warm Sex. He also created and starred in the incredible Rosehaven (ABC TV), with fellow comedian and real-life best friend Celia Pacquola. Plus – he’s had his wisdom teeth out, and will hopefully have a more powerful jawline when the swelling dies down.

Her songs are stamped with witty humour and poignant insight – always touching.
Beyond her recorded music career, Kate Miller-Heidke has recently made forays into the world of music theatre, composing an opera ‘The Rabbits’ in 2015. In 2016-17 Kate performed a suite of her songs with symphony orchestras around the country to huge acclaim, winning the Helpmann Award for Best Australian Contemporary Concert, and seeing her performance with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra released as a new album, the ARIA-nominated Live At The Sydney Opera House.

EXHIBITION INVITATION:
Peter Tilley Seeing the Shadow
21 March - 14 April 2018
Please join the artist for the exhibition opening:
OPENING LAUNCH: SATURDAY 24 March from 3PM
The elusive, insubstantial nature of the shadow lends itself to metaphor, myth and legend, with its significance contemplated by human consciousness throughout history. Shadows appear as essences of the soul – the externalisation of the inner self – as guides or advisors. In Jungian psychology, shadows contain parts of ourselves that are suppressed, denied, or unfavourable.
For his PhD research, Peter Tilley examines the theory and philosophy of shadow, developing and utilising an array of materials, found objects, symbols and methods that enable the construction of shadows to visually or symbolically disclose fundamental traits and mnemonics of the ‘casting’ figure.
The resulting sculptures become complex representations that explore illusions of certainty, memory and imagination – the mysteries of the unknown – and the fundamental identity and attributes of the figure/self.
Peter Tilley is represented by May Space, Sydney

Their many Australian fans will relish the chance to hear their early improvisational interplay, an impressive skill that has since become a signature of Gov't Mule's albums and live shows.
The buzz around the Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real was immense when they last played Australia in 2016, and has done nothing but intensify over the past 2 years.
Lukas first piqued music lovers’ attention on his dad Willie Nelson’s 2012 album, Heroes when their voices blended with potent DNA. Two years later, life took another turn skyward when Neil Young decided to make Promise of the Real his touring and studio band. Young has guided the grateful young musicians ever since as they’ve backed the legend on tour around the world and on his two most recent albums.
These experiences were undoubtedly invaluable, but none of what has come before will prepare you for the cosmic country soul of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, the band’s new, self-titled album released on August 25, 2017. Drawing on Lukas’ lineage as well surrogate uncles like Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and of course mentor Neil Young, they began to develop their own distinctive style of music. Sydney and Melbourne will be in for a treat when Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real deliver their self-described blend of ‘Cowboy Hippy Surf Rock’ next March.

ROBERT PLANT AND THE SENSATIONAL SPACE SHIFTERS

The legendary singer of Led Zeppelin returns to Australia along with his band, The Sensational Space Shifters. With a new album ‘Carry Fire’ out October 2017, and the incredible 2018 milestone; marking 50 years since Led Zeppelin’s first self-titled album was released, it promises to be a powerful show, that’s not to be missed for any true fan.
Formed in 1968, Led Zeppelin went on to become one of the most iconic and beloved bands in music history. Songs such as “Whole Lotta Love”, “Black Dog” and “Stairway to Heaven” became anthems that are still revered by music lovers of all ages.
The Led Zeppelin era ended in 1980 when John Bonham died. Since that time, Plant has put his wide-ranging musical fascination to good use on solo albums, such as 2007’s Raising Sand, which Plant made in collaboration with Alison Krauss that won six Grammy® Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
The Sensational Space Shifters are his latest project, first established in 2002 they are a loose band "inspired by the roots music of Mississippi, Appalachia, Gambia, Bristol and the foothills of Wolverhampton and drawing on influences collected in a lifetime of meander and journeying."
Robert Plant’s new album, ‘Carry Fire’, will be released October 13.  Plant talks about creating new work after 50 years in the music industry:
“It’s about intention, I respect and relish my past works but each time I feel the lure and incentive to create new work. I must mix old with new. Consequently, the whole impetus of the band has moved on its axis somewhat, the new sound and different space giving way to exciting and dramatic landscapes of mood, melody and instrumentation”.
Each night on this tour of Australia, Robert Plant will take audiences on an incredible journey through his unique musical life. These shows will include rare performances of some Led Zeppelin hits in intimate spaces that will allow fans to experience the full power of his epic vocal prowess.

Show Only With Bar Menu Available $60.00
Bonjour Holiday presents the return of HARRY MANX (CANADA) Faith Lift national tour of Australia – February-April 2018 www.harrymanx.com “Harry’s real skill lays in creating a rare musical place where blues, country, folk and Indian classical music co-exist as some spirit force”. Downbeat Canadian multi-instrumentalist Harry Manx returns to his fans in Australia with his newest take on his ‘Blues meets Ragas’ explorations. On this 12th tour down under, Harry will perform at the Port Fairy Folk Festival, The Blue Mountains Music Festival, Byron Bay Bluesfest as well as sideshows in all major cities and many towns in between. In his most recent recording, ‘Faith Lift’, Harry incorporates a String Quartet creating cross-cultural music that references and expands both Indian and western music and, shifts the feel and subtext of his unique sound. As Harry says, ‘the strings give my music such an amazing lift, it feels like I have wings’. Sitting centre stage playing drums and guitars, Harry drives the rhythms forward with deep grooves, soulful patterns and spacious tones. Using his 21-stringed Mohan veena (Indian slide guitar), a National steel guitar, a banjo, cigar box guitar, his voice, and harmonica to lay down his audible vision, the music carries the audience in a trance-like state. The lyrics draw from the works of the mystic poets with words of inspiration woven into story lines about everyday people. Harry’s just completed a hugely successful run across Canada with the string quartet, with shows at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the National Theatre in Ottawa, the Koerner Hall in Toronto and the Banff Centre of the Arts. Harry will be accompanied by his frequent accompanist, Sydney-based pianist Clayton Doley, for many of the dates as well as a string quartet at various festival shows. A worldwide festival favourite known for his droll humour as well as musical originality, Harry’s 15 albums and ceaseless touring have seen him earn a slew of Maple Leaf, Juno and Canadian Folk Awards, nominations, and accolades from musicians and fans worldwide. ‘Manx is the man who had already married Hindustani music to the blues and created a bastard progeny that weeps in quarter-tones.’ John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald Promoter: Bob Charter 0414882355 bob@bmff.org.au National Tour Dates: www.harrymanx.com and Facebook below Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HarryManx Media: Alison Pearl 0428845570 apearl@mullum.com.au

Gumball 2018

27-29 April 2018
Dashville, 103 Kirkton Rd, Lower Belford 2335
The Gum Ball is where it all started for us here at Dashville. If mum and dad never said yes to letting us host a festival in the front yard back in 2004... who knows what we'd be doing now.
The festival is located in secluded bush at Belford, in the middle of the Hunter Valley. It kicks off on a Friday afternoon and rolls all the way through to Sunday. Unchanged from previous years, it's still camping, BYO, very family friendly, one artist at a time on the main stage, plenty of things to see and do. Plenty of things to not have to do too.
We reckon it's one of those pristine kind of times where you can escape to the country, connect with like-minded people, great music and essential art. Soak up a bit of fresh air, kick back, relax and re-jig.
The first portion of the 2018 line-up is out, go check out the poster below or the who's playing page.
If you like your festivals easy, comfortable, inspiring and cost effective, then we're pretty confident we've got your best option come April 27-29 2018. Hopefully we see you there
The Gum Ball is a BYO all age camping festival featuring an array of amazing gourmet food and markets, licensed bar precinct, popular late night silent disco, a night-time kids crèche, various workshops and activities, morning yoga, pro skater demos and live artworks.
