DIRT, SOIL, EARTH – ART INSTALLATION BY PENNY DUNSTAN

Friday 4 May – Monday 28 May

Penny Dunstan’s installation muses on our moral and ethical responses to dirt, soil and earth. Her work references Hunter area soils, some agricultural, some unfarmed, and some manufactured, to prompt us to question how we might care for our most precious resource, that which grows our food, recycles our waste and makes our air.
Dr Penny Dunstan’s art practice is centred in an embodied walking method requiring one to be present in place, blending histories of created lands with new territorial dialogues between animals, plants and humans.
Dr Penny Dunstan is an artist and scientist, currently working as an Environmental Project Manager supervising biosolids reuse on farms and mine rehabilitation in the Hunter Valley.
This exhibition is part of Inspiracy Festival  A Climate for Change (18 – 20 MAY 2018) and the Altar/d Art Series, sponsored by Adamstown Arts in 2018.

Hurricane Fall
Country rock/pop act from Newcastle, Australia. Committed to providing a high energy show every time they hit the stage!
Hailing from Tamworth, NSW, but now calling Newcastle home, Hurricane Fall are one of the hardest working bands in the Aussie country/rock scene. They released their debut self-titled EP in January 2016, which reached No.2 on the iTunes Country charts, and followed up with their latest EP ‘How We Get Down’, which reached No.4 on the iTunes Country charts. While their EP’s feature great production, Hurricane Fall takes it to the next level on stage, saying ‘We pride ourselves on our performance. Everything we do in the social media and media world is to encourage people to get to a venue and see us live. If you want to see an energetic performance with big harmonies driving rhythm section, come and see us’.

Bad Dad Orchestra
My dad is bigger than your dad.
Part soul rock juggernaut, part support group.
A simple idea born of friendship, beers and fatherhood has flourished and taken shape. The basic premise: a big band, big grooves, big boots... oh and you've got to be a dad to join.
The Bad Dad Orchestra comprises of 8 dads (and counting) who have played solid parts in the Tasmanian band scene for the past decade.
Together they've got hundreds of kids, hundreds of riffs and a big old bag of style and swagger. The bands current sound; big grooves, snappy horn lines and catchy vocals.
Critics have likened The Bad Dad Orchestra to the classic sounds of Australian pub-rock with a modern twist, whilst others have named it a unique brand of soul.
Shine up those dancing boots. It's big, it's bad and it's dad.

Greg Bryce
Greg is currently performing mainly as a solo artist with occasional shows in his original bands Hot Yogis, DV8 and Jigzag. He plays a huge range of covers from all styles past to present along with his diverse array of originals.....the blues rock of DV8, the funky acoustic Hot Yogis and the joyous folk/pop of Jigzag.
Annie O’Dee & the Hotshots

Tim Rossington from 5pm
Singer/Songwriter from Newcastle. In his acoustic style Tim finds an element for playing original music and music from artists that inspire him.
Over the last few years Tim has moved from pubs and bars to the bigger stages and back again. Though no matter the size tim says he can't help but try my hardest every time, always wanting to better his performance.
In July of last year, Tim was a featured artist in the audition round of X factor. Tim decided to perform a cover of Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive'  surprising everyone.  Coming across as a humble country boy with his shaggy hair and bush hat, it was his singing (and guitar playing) that left everyone in a pleasant and unexpected state of shock and resulted in a thundering standing ovation.
On February the 4th Tim released his debut record 'RISING' and has been touring round Australia and the USA promoting the 5 track EP, which features 4 original songs and a studio version of 'I Will Survive'.
In an Acoustic style, Tim finds his true element in developing this craft and only hopes to continue moving forward in a career to share more songs with audiences new and old, young and wise.

With a diverse blend of individual influences, the chemistry created, once on stage, spreads infectiously into a “Good Kinda Crazy” crowd. Humble offstage, a strong social media fan presence and a desire to step up to the next level, Whiskey Business are being talked about for all the right reasons. Ones to watch!!
After the success of their first big TCMF and trip to Tasmania to headline the Indoor Country Music Jamboree, bookings for awesome venues such as the Kinross Woodshed in Albury and The Poweranch, Trafalgar in Vic, then up to Caloundra and the Ballina Country Music Festival.....but wait theres more...and the release of their upcoming Single and Video Clip and EP expected later this year...the next 12 months are expected to be hugely successful for this awesome band.
A Collaboration of Anita Tresidder on Lead Vocals/Percussion, Lennie Edgerton on Lead Guitar and Vocals, Romney Watts on Acoustic Guitar & Vocals, Ian Tresidder on Bass Guitar and now with the fabulous Adam Harris (previously of the The Crawford Brothers) on Drums, is proving to be extremely successful.

Then Jolene
Then Jolene is an 8 piece alt-country punk band hailing from the mid north coast of NSW, Australia. Our sound is amanifestation of disparate styles, collated by fate, combining double bass, washboard, fiddle, guitar, banjo and 4 part harmonies. We all bring all our individual artistic history to the table… Then Jolene is a fortuitous mistake – a loved failure that mirrors humanity itself.
Then Jolene have seven members, sometimes eight. Within those seven members are two married couples, 3 members born on the same day and a rhythm section barely on speaking terms. Then Jolene have, collectively, 11 children, a stand up double bass, banjo, fiddle, guitars, a lagerphone named Karl and sit down
Our sound is a manifestation of disparate styles, collated by fate. We all have vastly different but long-lived backgrounds in musical performance, and we bring all our individual artistic history to the table…
Happy Time Swamp Gospel acknowledges the instruments – a 140 yr old German made stand up bass, a 90 year old banjo, an Australian Maton acoustic guitar, a pristine Les Paul, a 70 year old washboard (modified with recycled Australian hardwood), a re-homed 16” kick drum discovered on a park bench at 3 am in the inner west of Sydney and 6 harmonised voices.
In addition to this, it acknowledges our intent – be happy, be swampy and play with spirit. A pleasant but surprising effect this creates is unprecedented inter-generational dancing – everybody gets it when they hear it, no matter your age.
Rising from the ashes of Cletus (a punk-country brat-of-a-band that self-immolated like Jimi and his guitar at the 1968 Monterey Pop Festival), Then Jolene went acoustic and discarded the drums to give the songs space to breathe.
Then Jolene is a fortuitous mistake – a loved failure that mirrors humanity itself.

GW Freebird Blues Band
‘GW FREEBIRD captures the spirit of 'super 70's blues infused rock n roll!’
“A powerhouse first class music machine clocking up 3 decades and 3,000 live shows, and with walls of gold and platinum cds ... ” I can hear the rock n roll wrestling voice over reading this crud lol … but I do work hard to be just that and have earned some wonderful awards for sales as a result over the years. Unless you have lived this life its hard to imagine the work, travel, sacrifice and constant struggle in refining any talent you received from the great spirit. My favourite artists are the types like Joe Walsh, Tedeschi Trucks, Bonnie Raitt, of course Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Chris Stapleton … the artists who keep writing, recording and playing, putting their art out there. A good friend / mentor shared with me recently ... 'after the first 15 years of rock stardom … it’s the best time … you can be an artist now more than ever and create, produce and release your material continually', and I love that wisdom. It help me to stay inspired.

Back to Back Galleries presents

In Pursuit of Meaning

New works by Heather Campbell & Naomi Wild
 Dates: 20th April – 6th May 2018
Opening Friday 20th April at 6pm.
Artists Campbell and Wild similarly invite us into layers of dialogue about the changing nature of the human condition.
Campbell’s sculptures use the figure as a metonymy for human identity. Increasingly obsessed with human faces in advertising and social media, we have little time to ponder the deeper aspects of life. Her introverted figures reveal their naïve simplicity...in a world of escapism where other people’s lives dwarf our personal realities.
Wild’s ongoing exploration of the psyche in which her paintings act as metaphor for aspects of an interior experience. Her bold use of archetypal symbology enables stories to be born within the viewer, uncovering layers of
 poetic meaning.
Newcastle Studio Potters is a not for profit incorporated association supporting ceramic artists. Its gallery Back to Back Gallery, while presenting exhibitions in various media focuses on traditional and contemporary ceramics.

Gallery 139

Our next gallery curated exhibition is What Remains, starting this Thursday 12 April. For the first time the gallery asked a group of artists to respond to the concept of 'what remains'. The result takes us for a wander through landscapes, cities and inside homes, to the gardens of relatives, past junk yards and long lost belongings. We hope you get the chance to see this enchanting exhibition.

Official opening is Saturday 14 April from 2-4pm and the exhibition runs for 3 weeks until 29 April with MEET THE ARTIST sessions during this time.

Also starting this week in Sydney, is a 2 week solo exhibition by Gallery 139 Artist, Dino Consalvo at Duckrabbit in Redfern. DEAD Life is a series of paintings that explore the moments surrounding death, where death is beautiful and peaceful in its silence. Exhibition dates 11 - 22 April and official opening is Wednesday 11 April from 5.30pm all welcome.

And please don't forget we are part of the first Independent Galleries Newcastle ART FAIR to be held at Newcastle Art Gallery to coincide with LAST FRIDAYS on 27 April, from 5-8pm. This is a completely free event and a great chance to meet all the galleries from IGN and many of the smaller organisations that support this initiative.  Follow IGN on Instagram and Facebook to stay up to date.

Many thanks and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Featured Event: Grant Lee Phillips

7:30pm - 11:30pm Grant Lee Phillips with Special guest Matt Joe Gow – tickets $49.50 (including booking fee)
Over an extensive career Grant-Lee Phillips has earned a reputation as a songwriter's songwriter - an artist who can deliver lyrical observations with a dry and evocative sense of time and place.
His gift for reconciling classic touchstones with an adventurous sensibility has distinguished his work since he first emerged as the front-man of the acclaimed trio Grant Lee Buffalo in the early ‘90s.
At once cinematic in scope and disarmingly intimate, his captivating solo career has explored a variety of modes. Whether it be the electronic inventiveness of Mobilize, acoustic interplay of Virginia Creeper,
chamber-pop of Little Moon, meditative solemnity of Walking in the Green Corn, Nashville inspired The Narrows or his latest and most urgent work, Widdershins - Phillips is not one to rest on the accolades of the past.
He’s a riveting live performer who thrives onstage. Nevertheless, a new generation have discovered Phillips through his role as the town troubadour on the cult television hit The Gilmore Girls (both in its original run and the 2016 reunion.)
Speaking of his new album, Widdershins, Phillips sees a kind of parallel with his earliest work with Grant Lee Buffalo. “That was also a time of intense social anxiety. The Gulf War, the LA riots – everything became cranked up. Then a few years later there was the earthquake we lived through, which also made for a time of uneasiness. I was in a heightened state when I wrote that stuff – as I am now.” As the past and present converge and the journey of Grant-Lee Phillips continues, his craftsmanship continues to blossom. In times of tumult, he awakens comfort and hope by shining light into darker corners. “I hope to express my faith in people, my faith in the good ideas we’re capable of, and that regardless of what opposition we face, the fact that we can surmount these things,” he concludes. “We can stare them down, laugh at them, belittle them, and drive the darkness back into a hole. Music is a way of kicking some of these giants out at the knees.”
With his Australian tour around the corner he reflects on his anticipated return. "After so many years, I am finally returning for a proper tour of Australia this May. I’ll be joined by special guest Matt Joe Gow. I look forward to these shows and the welcoming spirit of Australia.” — Grant-Lee Phillips

The Merewether Fats’ Blues Jam

Thursday | 7pm | Free Admission
The Merewether Fats’ Blues Jam has been running on the first Thursday of each month for over 10 years. The night is a celebration of Blues, roots and folk musical styles.
Founded by Mark ‘Merewether Fats’ Salter the blues jam has become a hub for the music community, young, young at heart, musicians of all levels and most importantly music fans. It’s strictly blues music and Fats had very stringent guidelines on what blues is. The main condition is that it came from the soul of the player.
The night usually kicks off at 7:30pm with an introductory set from Fat’s house band to set the tone. From there it’s open to all for about 3 songs at a time. We try tocultivate a wide variety of artists to play acoustic and delta styles, Chicago shuffles, Detroit boogies, Bo Diddley rhythms and it just gets deeper.
Jammers can play solo, duo or as an ensemble. They can borrow the house band and however, there’s plenty of great players to to pick up a band on the night. Singers, harmonica players, keyboardists, drummers, bass players, guitar players… even banjo players. We get first time performers and seasoned veterans, sometimes on stage at the same time sharing a passion for blues.
Mark ‘Merewether Fats’ Salter passed away in 2016 and the community will continue to champion this part of his legacy in classic blues brothers style. To make sure it’s accessible to future generations and get people hooked on the rhythm of the human condition. As Fats would always say ‘…blues is sad music that makes you feel good.’ By the way, no pedals, bring your instrument and a lead (tuner helps). Amps and kit on stage, say g’day to the guys in the house band on the night to get your name on the run sheet.”

Andrew Swift with Ben Leece (free)

22 April
Making music can sometimes feel like you’re drifting on the ocean, waiting for inspiration to appear like shore on the horizon. For Australian singer-songwriterAndrew Swift, the sea was the Melbourne music scene. Following the release of his acclaimed 2015 debut, Sound the Alarm, he was adrift in the sprawling waves. Butcoastline appeared in the form of country and Americana music. These timeless genres reinvigorated his songwriting and new music flowed around him.
Those familiar with Swift’s impressive first record will notice the left turn taken on follow-up Call Out For the Cavalry. The classic sound of American roots countryfits him like a glove. One would think from listening to assured tracks like ‘Reckless Desires’ and ‘Ball & Chain’ that Swift has been plying his trade in the Australianalt-country scene since he picked up a guitar. But this is new territory for Swift and he’s quickly acclimatised.

Black Heart Breakers ($8.20)

27 April
Since their inception in 2014, Australian punk rock and roll sensation Black Heart Breakers have achieved punk rock glory opening for Marky Ramone, Stiff Little Fingers, Ruts DC and Radio Birdman, in between tours and playing hundreds of gigs
Black Heart Breakers sing about the hard times, drinking, and girls. It’s an exhilarating wall of sound, with raw lyrics, sweet harmonies and fast downstroke guitars. Their debut album was applauded by punk rock communities across the globe before ever playing a show. This was followed by a double single ‘I Want You’ and a unique cover of Fred Fassert’s ‘Barbara Ann’. 2017 saw Black Heart Breakers team up with newly established label Cottonmouth Records to release an exclusive five track vinyl called ‘Wasted’. It was recorded by Mo Maihem (Hell City Glamours, Mucho Sonar) at his home studio in Avalon and Mixed by Dan Dixon (Biters, Wyldlife . This EP packed a quick punch and is unmistakeably noticed for its remarkable artwork by Ben Brown (Cosmic Psychos, Airborne, Pixies). Black Heart Breakers have never been afraid to wear the influences on the sleeve proudly, loving everything from the Ramones, the Beach Boys, AC/DC and Rancid. Starting 2018 exactly how they left 2017, Black Heart Breakers jumped into the studio with producer Daniel Antix (Gay Paris, Sound Of Seasons, Transvaal Diamond Syndicate) to record ‘Rotting Out’. This 6 track EP introduces a tighter, slicker and meaner sound than previous efforts.

The Whitlams 3rd and FINAL SHOW

The Whitlams will tour nationally in their classic four-piece configuration to bring their 25th year to a rowdy finale. Starting the anniversary year in May 2017 selling out concert halls in each state capital with 60 piece orchestras, they end  it with a jaunt through their favourite pub and small theatre gigs around the country. They are ditching the conductor and the charts, and are back to the common muscle-memory of 1000 shows and six albums. The Whitlams' line up of Tim Freedman on piano and vocals, Jak Housden on guitar, Warwick Hornby on bass and Terepai Richmond on drums will be delivering the sort of sprawling, rambunctious set they have become famous for.

Mark Wilkinson

After a huge year that saw the Sydney singer-songwriter release his self-produced EP “Lost in a Dream" and stage some 100+ shows across the globe, Mark Wilkinson doesn’t look to slow down in 2018 as he unveils his much anticipated full length record "Wasted Hours" (out Feb 9) and returns to the road.
This collection of songs showcases the full dynamic range of Wilkinson's songwriting, from delicate and emotive tracks like "Time Machine" to the more driven and anthemic "Moving On". What remains ever present though is his captivating vocal and rare ability to engage and connect with an audience.
“He truly has a gift for poetic lyrics...There's a glow of warm around him and a richness to his supreme voice, sending shivers down spines as he pulls you into the soul of him.”

Van The Man

"VAN THE MAN" had its roots in the highly successful Sydney wine bar circuit of the 1970's. "Hogan & The Becketts" (the backbone of Van the Man) played all the hits through the 80's and 90's, with Van Morrison being one of the favourites. In 1999 " "Van the Man" was formed and started its career with a bang, being invited to perform at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. According to Richard Jinman of "The Age" ..."sound right....oh yes! Van the Man do the business. Hogan has Van's jazzy vocal phrasing and gruff irish burr down pat. Hit or miss? Absolute HIT! "
"Van the Man" has gone on to perform for State of Origin fixtures, Bledisloe Cup Finals, last year sold out one of Sydney's premier live music venues, The Basement and had a great pre-christmas show at the Blue Beat Live Club at Double Bay as well as a sellout show on New Year's Eve at the highly acclaimed international musicians venue of The Clarendon Guesthouse in Katoomba. With exclusive appearances for the Packer family at their country retreat Ellerston, seven highly acclaimed tours of New Zealand and a recent triumphant performance at Norway's Music Festival in Kjollefjord, "Van the Man" is a must see for all Van Morrison fans, both young and old.

Bondi Cigars

When the Bondi Cigars were first gigging around Sydney, late 1989, they moved in a blues/R&B circuit which, while robust enough since the 60s, had then been sparked into new life by the "blues revival" of the mid-80's, spearheaded by Robert Cray and many others.

MOTHERS DAY Lunch with The Beatnix

It was February 1980, 10 months before the untimely death of John Lennon, that Australia and possibly the worlds, first tribute show THE BEATNIX was conceived and produced by Tony Dean - founding member and now owner/manager. Coming from a Show Band background, popular in the 1970s and touring Australia wide, Tony was used to playing covers including Beatles, Doobie Brothers, Beach Boys, Hollies, Bee Gees, & Eagles, all great harmony groups, plus songs directly from the top twenty hit parade but then Punk came along and it was out of the question to play that style of music. It was suggested we play more Beatles music, everybody loves The Beatles. From that simple suggestion Tony thought lets play only Beatles songs, hence the first tribute show was conceived.

THE ONE – AN ENCHANTING OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE

 KING EDWARD PARK

 WED, 18 APRIL 2018
 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Out-door theatre and music will transform King Edward Park as the enduring quest for perfection takes hold of five very different characters in a new production by Tantrum Youth Arts, in collaboration with the University of Newcastle’s Community Strings.
“The One is about redefining romance for the modern age.” says Lucy Shepherd, Artistic Director of Tantrum. “We’ve looked at traditional fairy tales, musicals and stories and turned them on their head to create something new and relevant.” she says, adding that the live scoring, new writing and outdoor venue is what sets The One apart from other theatre productions. “Site-specific theatre has its own magic, and what is more enchanting than string music and theatre under the stars?” Shepherd asks.
Amy Morris, an emerging theatre-maker and actor involved in directing The One is excited about the different perspectives offered in the performance. “There’s something for everyone with this production.” Morris says of the “universal themes” explored and deconstructed in the show. “It’s about romantic ideals, and how that changes and impacts on different people. It shows that romance isn’t this static thing that is narrowly defined.”
The One is being performed in King Edward Park over 5 evenings from the 18th – 22nd of April, featuring an ensemble cast of local young, emerging and professional artists. Tickets are available from www.tantrum.org.au. The One is supported by Create NSW and Orica’s Community Investment Program.
Dates: April 18th – 22nd
Venue: King Edward Park, Newcastle
Tickets: $35 for full/ $20 for concession

Gumball 2018

27-29 April 2018
Dashville, 103 Kirkton Rd, Lower Belford 2335
The Gum Ball is where it all started for us here at Dashville. If mum and dad never said yes to letting us host a festival in the front yard back in 2004... who knows what we'd be doing now.
The festival is located in secluded bush at Belford, in the middle of the Hunter Valley. It kicks off on a Friday afternoon and rolls all the way through to Sunday. Unchanged from previous years, it's still camping, BYO, very family friendly, one artist at a time on the main stage, plenty of things to see and do. Plenty of things to not have to do too.
We reckon it's one of those pristine kind of times where you can escape to the country, connect with like-minded people, great music and essential art. Soak up a bit of fresh air, kick back, relax and re-jig.
The first portion of the 2018 line-up is out, go check out the poster below or the who's playing page.
If you like your festivals easy, comfortable, inspiring and cost effective, then we're pretty confident we've got your best option come April 27-29 2018. Hopefully we see you there
The Gum Ball is a BYO all age camping festival featuring an array of amazing gourmet food and markets, licensed bar precinct, popular late night silent disco, a night-time kids crèche, various workshops and activities, morning yoga, pro skater demos and live artworks.

The White Album Concert

28 & 29 July
It’s one of the most successful Beatles events ever staged in Australia. After two sold-out tours in 2009 and 2014, Chris Cheney (The Living End), Phil Jamieson(Grinspoon), Tim Rogers (You Am I), and ARIA Award-winning solo artist Josh Pyke are reuniting for a 2018 tour in a nod to the 50th anniversary of this very special album.
Few records echo down through the years like the White Album.
Coming after India, but before the split, the White Album was the sound of John, Paul, George and Ringo throwing everything they’d learned into their musical blender. This major work bursts with variety, creativity, experimentation, and the genius of The Beatles during one of their most intense, fertile periods. One of the 10 greatest albums of all time according to Rolling Stone it’s 30 songs veer from the populist stomp of Back in the U.S.S.R and the mind-bending Happiness is a Warm Gun to the melodious sorrow of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, the ska pop fun of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, and the hard rock prototype Helter Skelter.
Chris, Josh, Phil & Tim are backed by a 17-piece rock orchestra including guitars, strings, horns and two drummers with musical direction by Rex Goh.
The White Album songs will be performed in track order, starting with Back in the USSR and closing with Good Night. And for those in the know – yes, that includes Revolution 9.
Two performances on Sat 28 July and Sunday 29 July
Standard tickets from $89.00 | $8.50 Booking fee applies per transaction

Opera House Concert Hall
Thursday 2 August
The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra, directed by veteran trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, features a peerless array of 18 instrumentalists together with special guest vocalist, the remarkable Carmen Bradford, hired by Basie himself.
This special event will be the Orchestra’s tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. The Basie Band had a strong history with both artists and their reverence for them will shine through in this homage to these two greats of jazz.
The living embodiment of swing, one of the most elegant and irresistible sounds that ever shook the western world, The Legendary Count BasieOrchestra have announced they will tour Australia and New Zealand in July/August 2018.
Directed by veteran trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, the 18-piece Count Basie Orchestra features a peerless array of instrumentalists with combined credentials that have topped the upper echelons of the international jazz world for decades.
From Billie Holiday to Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra to Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan to Ella Fitzgerald, the Count Basie Orchestra has provided the supremely distinctive sound and swing behind some of the greatest singers of the modern age.
Current members still include trombonist Clarence Banks, hired all those years ago by Basie himself, as well as former members of Stan Kenton’s, Benny Goodman’s and Lionel Hampton's ensembles.
Special guest vocalist is the remarkable Carmen Bradford, who has performed with artists including Tony Bennett, James Brown, Wynton Marsalis, Frank Sinatra and George Benson. Count Basie heard Bradford sing in the early eighties and immediately hired her as vocalist for his Orchestra, a role she has continued in to this day.
A special feature this tour will be the Orchestra’s tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald and the immortal Louis Armstrong. The Basie Band had a strong history with both artists and their reverence for them will shine through in this homage to these two greats of jazz.
The tradition of excellence has continued beyond the Count's passing in 1984 to make the Orchestra a permanent fixture in Down Beat and Jazz Times polls throughout the '80s and '90s. The latest of a total 18 Grammy Awards was bestowed as recently as their Count Plays Duke album of '99.
Simply put, the Count Basie Orchestra is the real deal, a who’s who of the best swing players the world has to offer.
