Support Live Music - The hard copy petition is circulating this weekend. Add your name to this important initiative to place the onus on developers to soundproof new building projects and have NSW align with the SA and Vic laws which protect venues. Newcastle Council voted this week to support this. Gaining momentum now so please sign the hard copy when you get the opportunity. Petition pages can be found at the Wicko, ask a bar staff "where can i sign"...
Have a great weekend.

3 March - 29 April 2018
A new exhibition opens Saturday 3 March, exploring half a century of the work of one of Australia's most respected artists.
FREE ENTRY, CLOSES SUNDAY 29 APRIL.
10am to 5pm Tue to Sun, 7 days during school holidays

Elisabeth Cummings graduated from the National Art School in Sydney in the 1950s as part of a cohort of high achievers. Her generation witnessed the heyday of Abstract Expressionism: she was 22 years old when Jackson Pollock died. The energised handwriting and glorious sprawling webs we observe in so many of her canvases hints at the liberating influence that she, like so many of her contemporaries absorbed from Pollock and de Kooning, not to mention Olsen and Fairweather. However, while Cummings’ images seem steeped in the language of post-war abstraction, her work has rarely renounced its dependency on landscapes, interiors and (quite rarely) figures.
Her painting maintains a spirited dialogue with a rich and varied tradition, in particular with her revered forerunners Bonnard, Vuillard, Braque, Fairweather and Cossington-Smith. Yet perhaps the most crucial factor which lends the most distinctive character to her paintings is the spirit of the Australian bush: since 1970, Cummings has occupied a home and studio in an artists’ colony in Wedderburn, overlooking a steep, heavily wooded gully nearby the Georges River, south of Sydney. An avid and repeated visitor to remote areas of Australia, Cummings has been traversing the country since the 1980s. She has spent regular periods in the Flinders Ranges, visiting Arkaroola, the Gammon Ranges and their surroundings. Her painting excursions have encompassed Lake Mungo, The Kimberleys, Elcho Island (as an invited guest of the Indigenous community), Menindee, West MacDonnell Ranges, Fowlers Gap, the Monaro and Currumbin in Queensland.
This touring exhibition from Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra is curated by Sioux Garside founding Director of the Campbelltown Art Gallery and previously Senior Curator of the Sydney University Art Gallery.

“Free Fallin’ – A Tribute to Tom Petty”
“Free Fallin’ – A Tribute to Tom Petty” will be a night of true celebration. The late Tom Petty amassed what is arguable one of the best catalogs of material in the modern rock era, with boundless bona fide hits, and album tracks that have proven almost as iconic. It’s a body of work almost impossible to pay tribute to effectively. Regardless, for 4 select shows spread across Sydney, the 5 piece “House Band”, led by multi-instrumentalist/singer- songwriter/record producer Michael Carpenter, will be joined by a wide range of special guests from the Country, Folk and Americana worlds to perform as many Petty tracks as can be squeezed into a 2 set, 2.5 hour show.
This show promises to be a memorable, yet appropriate celebration of the music of an artist who stood above most others for over 40 years.

The Merewether Fats’ Blues Jam
Thursday, 1st March 2018 | 7pm | Free Admission
The Merewether Fats’ Blues Jam has been running on the first Thursday of each month for over 10 years. The night is a celebration of Blues, roots and folk musical styles.
Founded by Mark ‘Merewether Fats’ Salter the blues jam has become a hub for the music community, young, young at heart, musicians of all levels and most importantly music fans. It’s strictly blues music and Fats had very stringent guidelines on what blues is. The main condition is that it came from the soul of the player.
The night usually kicks off at 7:30pm with an introductory set from Fat’s house band to set the tone. From there it’s open to all for about 3 songs at a time. We try to cultivate a wide variety of artists to play acoustic and delta styles, Chicago shuffles, Detroit boogies, Bo Diddley rhythms and it just gets deeper.
Jammers can play solo, duo or as an ensemble. They can borrow the house band and however, there’s plenty of great players to to pick up a band on the night. Singers, harmonica players, keyboardists, drummers, bass players, guitar players… even banjo players. We get first time performers and seasoned veterans, sometimes on stage at the same time sharing a passion for blues.
Mark ‘Merewether Fats’ Salter passed away in 2016 and the community will continue to champion this part of his legacy in classic blues brothers style. To make sure it’s accessible to future generations and get people hooked on the rhythm of the human condition. As Fats would always say ‘…blues is sad music that makes you feel good.’ By the way, no pedals, bring your instrument and a lead (tuner helps). Amps and kit on stage, say g’day to the guys in the house band on the night to get your name on the run sheet.”

Timberwolf
Off the back of releasing his highly anticipated debut album Íkaros, Adelaide singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Timberwolf has announced a national headline tour, set for early 2018. The news follows the singer's Like A Version performanc e this morning via triple j, with a stunning rendition of Chet Faker’s "Talk Is Cheap".
Kicking off at Adelaide’s Garden of Unearthly Delights Festival on February 16, the tour will see Timberwolf transverse across Australia’s East Coast heading to Wollongong, Sydney, Newcastle, Byron Bay, Sunshine Coast, Belgrave, Melbourne and Geelong – debuting his brand new live show to bring his critically-acclaimed debut album to life.
Released earlier this year, Íkaros is comprised of twelve tracks that showcase exceptional vocal and compositional talent. Undeniably captivating from the onset, Íkaros delves deep into Panouskis' production ability, boasting genius chord progressions, stripped acoustic arrangements, sun-drenched psychedelic guitar and mesmerising vocal. Íkaros received national applause, the album’s dynamism being recognised by Rolling Stone saying, “Íkaros brims with sweeping, expansive melodies that combine with Panouskis’ vocal to create an enveloping intimacy”, as well as The Music who said, “it’s what powerful music is capable of and oh so wonderful when one chances upon it”.
Since emerging in 2015 with debut EP Flux, Timberwolf has pushed boundaries with his unique and authentic song writing and crafty compositions. 2016's single "Something You Said" led to signing with US publisher Third Side Music and prestigious Australian booking agency Select Music. Following on, he shared his first two album cuts in "Hold You Up" and "Washed Up", which landed him on support duties for Amy Shark's sold out national tour; together with consistent applause from tripl e j and community radio, Timberwolf has secured a well-deserved national fan base.
Timberwolf is currently on a string of national support shows for Lime Cordiale and The Teskey Brothers, alongside festival appearances at Adelaide's Root Down, Woodford Folk and Rockhampton's One Hot Night, before kicking off his Íkaros album tour in February 2018.

TWILIGHT AT TARONGA HAS UNVEILED ITS 2018 ZOO GIG PROGRAM
No longer just the realms of Monica Trapaga residencies and kiddie-aimed pantomimes, Twilight at Taronga — the after-hours live music series that boasts perhaps the best view of Sydney Harbour as well as lots of adorable animals — has proven it's got some real cred when it comes to hosting outdoor gigs in the past few years. Held in Taronga Zoo's natural amphitheatre, the concert series kicks off on Friday, February 2 with a set by Sydney legends The Jezebels. They'll be followed on Saturday by singer-songwriter Dan Sultan, who'll perform alongside Melbourne's The Teskey Brothers. Other standouts include Neil and Liam Finn, The Preatures, Cloud Control with Julia Jacklin, retro faves The Lemonheads and a Valentine's Day special edition of the cult rock music trivia show RocKwiz.
They've also announced partnerships with Electric Lady presenting Montaigne, Tired Lion and Sloan Peterson, and Future Classic presenting Mount Kimbie, Kučka and Christopher Port. And yes, ABBA tribute act Bjorn Again will be back by popular demand.
Picnic-bringing is encouraged, but there'll also be incredibly delicious hampers available onsite. Tickets go on sale at 9am on Tuesday, October 17, and include same-day entry into the zoo plus free select public transport. As always, all proceeds will go to the go back into Taronga's ongoing conservation work.

Luke’s almost fixed it… his life that is. He now has a real, actual girlfriend – something he previously thought impossible because of both his face and personality. With his new found personal security, he’s now got time to worry about all the stuff that is actually worth worrying about. Like, what is actually going on in the world? And, what happens when his girlfriend realises she’s made a mistake, leaves, and tells other people not to date him?
Since Luke McGregor’s breakthrough 2014 stand-up show I Worry That I Worry Too Much, things have improved out of sight for Australia’s favourite awkward, obsessive-compulsive comedian.
He has become a genuine star of the small screen by way of his very own, uncomfortably illuminating documentary series for the ABC, Luke Warm Sex. He also created and starred in the incredible Rosehaven (ABC TV), with fellow comedian and real-life best friend Celia Pacquola. Plus – he’s had his wisdom teeth out, and will hopefully have a more powerful jawline when the swelling dies down.

In recent years she has emerged as a global music star, performing to worldwide adulation for her breathtaking sitar virtuosity and releasing numerous critically acclaimed albums.
Anoushka Shankar's music takes the ancient Indian instrument firmly into the contemporary world – into electronica, classical music and flamenco, collaborating alongside the world’s great orchestras with artists as diverse as Sting, M.I.A and Herbie Hancock.
Co-written by the extraordinary percussionist and hang player Manu Delago, her album Land of Gold, is a response to the humanitarian plight of refugees and a searing cry against injustice.
Be astounded by an evening of deeply expressive music, which draws upon India’s ancient culture, while creating a dynamically intoxicating sense of the contemporary.
“She’s one of the most gifted artists in her generation.”
Los Angeles Times
“A natural talent blessed with fluid technique and keen musical instincts, she possesses a darker, purer sound than her father (Ravi Shankar) but is clearly guided by his tutelage.”
The Birmingham News
“Most people are musicians simply because they play a certain instrument; when they plat that instrument the music appears. But Ravi to me, he is the music; it just happens to be that he plays the Sitar. And it’s like that with Anoushka. She has that quality – she is the music. “

Russell Morris redefined himself and the Australian Blues genre in 2013 with the release of the landmark album ’Sharkmouth’. By taking on the trappings of a husky-toned bluesman, he produced a powerful album steeped in Australian history. The stories, people and events of our collective history would see Russell collect the ARIA for BEST BLUES & ROOTS ALBUM (his first), and go on to be the biggest selling local & original release for that year. ? He followed this success in 2014 with ‘Van Diemen’s Land’; an album whose panorama spanned colonial horrors to WW2 bombers and Japanese labour camps; dramas on river and sea and character portraits from Birdsville to Kings Cross. It went on to be Russell’s highest debuting album ever, receive another ARIA nomination for BEST BLUES & ROOTS ALBUM; win multiple Australian music awards and be the biggest selling blues album of the year. ? In 2016, Russell completed his trilogy with the release of Red Dirt, Red Heart; filled with tales of bushrangers, jails, desert road trips and indigenous heroes. Again he collected the ARIA for BEST BLUES & ROOTS ALBUM, and again have a third consecutive best selling blues album of the year. ? ‘Ghosts & Legends’ is the culmination of Russell’s multi-award winning blues trilogy. It contains all three groundbreaking albums, including previously unreleased songs, a 56 page collector’s booklet featuring the stories of each song, lyrics and stunning colour photos. The Ghosts & Legends DVD is a must-have for any Morris or blues fan; featuring over 4 hours of music videos, album commentaries, live performances and insightful interviews.

GOV'T MULE WITH SPECIAL GUESTS LUKAS NELSON & POTR
Monday, March 26, 2018 at 7 PM - 10 PM UTC+11
624 George Street, Sydney, Australia 2000
Details
Bluesfest Touring is proud to announce an unmissable double header for Rock n Roll fans –Gov’t Mule with special Guests Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real. The Metro in Sydney and The Corner in Melbourne are set to come alive with the sound of epic guitar and thundering drums when the bands roll into town in March.
Gov't Mule has showcased their virtuosity, intelligence and breadth for more than two decades, which have encompassed 15 studio and live albums, millions of album and track sales and thousands of performances. Formed as a side project for members of The Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule has become a human encyclopedia of timeless American music while adding to that canon with their signature sound. Their many Australian fans will relish the chance to hear their early improvisational interplay, an impressive skill that has since become a signature of Gov't Mule's albums and live shows.
The buzz around the Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real was immense when they last played Australia in 2016, and has done nothing but intensify over the past 2 years.
Lukas first piqued music lovers’ attention on his dad Willie Nelson’s 2012 album, Heroes when their voices blended with potent DNA. Two years later, life took another turn skyward when Neil Young decided to make Promise of the Real his touring and studio band. Young has guided the grateful young musicians ever since as they’ve backed the legend on tour around the world and on his two most recent albums.
These experiences were undoubtedly invaluable, but none of what has come before will prepare you for the cosmic country soul of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, the band’s new, self-titled album released on August 25, 2017. Drawing on Lukas’ lineage as well surrogate uncles like Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and of course mentor Neil Young, they began to develop their own distinctive style of music. Sydney and Melbourne will be in for a treat when Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real deliver their self-described blend of ‘Cowboy Hippy Surf Rock’ next March.

ROBERT PLANT AND THE SENSATIONAL SPACE SHIFTERS
The legendary singer of Led Zeppelin returns to Australia along with his band, The Sensational Space Shifters. With a new album ‘Carry Fire’ out October 2017, and the incredible 2018 milestone; marking 50 years since Led Zeppelin’s first self-titled album was released, it promises to be a powerful show, that’s not to be missed for any true fan.
Formed in 1968, Led Zeppelin went on to become one of the most iconic and beloved bands in music history. Songs such as “Whole Lotta Love”, “Black Dog” and “Stairway to Heaven” became anthems that are still revered by music lovers of all ages.
The Led Zeppelin era ended in 1980 when John Bonham died. Since that time, Plant has put his wide-ranging musical fascination to good use on solo albums, such as 2007’s Raising Sand, which Plant made in collaboration with Alison Krauss that won six Grammy® Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
The Sensational Space Shifters are his latest project, first established in 2002 they are a loose band "inspired by the roots music of Mississippi, Appalachia, Gambia, Bristol and the foothills of Wolverhampton and drawing on influences collected in a lifetime of meander and journeying."
Robert Plant’s new album, ‘Carry Fire’, will be released October 13. Plant talks about creating new work after 50 years in the music industry:
“It’s about intention, I respect and relish my past works but each time I feel the lure and incentive to create new work. I must mix old with new. Consequently, the whole impetus of the band has moved on its axis somewhat, the new sound and different space giving way to exciting and dramatic landscapes of mood, melody and instrumentation”.
Each night on this tour of Australia, Robert Plant will take audiences on an incredible journey through his unique musical life. These shows will include rare performances of some Led Zeppelin hits in intimate spaces that will allow fans to experience the full power of his epic vocal prowess.

GUMBALL 2018
27-29 April 2018
Dashville, 103 Kirkton Rd, Lower Belford 2335
The Gum Ball is where it all started for us here at Dashville. If mum and dad never said yes to letting us host a festival in the front yard back in 2004... who knows what we'd be doing now.
The festival is located in secluded bush at Belford, in the middle of the Hunter Valley. It kicks off on a Friday afternoon and rolls all the way through to Sunday. Unchanged from previous years, it's still camping, BYO, very family friendly, one artist at a time on the main stage, plenty of things to see and do. Plenty of things to not have to do too.
We reckon it's one of those pristine kind of times where you can escape to the country, connect with like-minded people, great music and essential art. Soak up a bit of fresh air, kick back, relax and re-jig.
The first portion of the 2018 line-up is out, go check out the poster below or the who's playing page.
If you like your festivals easy, comfortable, inspiring and cost effective, then we're pretty confident we've got your best option come April 27-29 2018. Hopefully we see you there
