Gallery openings on Thu, Fri and Sat. If you haven’t seen the Creative Incubator, then put a note on your calendar for 22nd this month.
Some great music this weekend but it is not fair having Southpaw, Grant Walmsley, Steve Edmonds  and Trancemission all playing on Sunday.
This guide attempts to summarise popular venues and their music. More detailed info below on Wicko, Stag & Hunter and Lizottes as they all have such a variety of bands, many not from our local area. Scroll down for a broader look at the scene around town.
With so much going on in this town it is difficult to capture it all in this guide, the Newcastle Live gig guide does provide a detailed source of information.
Broader music style for some of the bands playing at the Hamilton Station – Human Failure, Artificial Urinary Sphincter, Trashed Again, Haunt Us, Vultures Ate Corpses in Towers of Silence, Chambers of Insanity, I Hate People, Homewrecker, Murder by Death, Astrodeath, Crave Death – Great to see a venue providing a different opportunity for live bands in Newcastle
Tickets on sale Monday for Ian Moss at the Enmore in Sydney and Newcastle City Hall plus other capitol cities. This is the 30th Anniversary Matchbox Tour.
Tickets on sale now for U2, good luck getting any.
Elton John announces show in the Hunter Valley.
Enjoy the weekend.

Some Bands to Know
Southpaw Bluesband
I have been told this a great band that plays at Shinnies. Think the person who told me is a little biased but there are good reasons to back that up. They have a great guitarist!!!!!! Bandmates include incredible rhythm section with Mick James on drums, Liam Ferguson on Bass  add to that Andrew Ross (from Mondo Rock) on keyboard and saxaphone and the blues rock of Nick Croft on Fender Strat feat Scotty Buchanen on harmonica.

Dashville Skyline 2019
Please welcome first acts for Dashville Skyline 2019
Happy Thursday! Hope you're doing great!
With the winter settling in around here, it's definitely high time to be lonely and dwell on some chosen negatives. So make sure you grab hold of those you love and show them how much you care. I generally do this best with a nice lamb casserole bedazzled with a little homegrown pumpkin.
Say here's another thing to get pumpk'd up about... the first round of acts coming along to Dashville Skyline later this year!
Excited is an understatement to be hosting the one and only Archie Roach as a special guest of Dashville. Archie will be joining us on the Friday night.
Alongside these great acts announced today, is a whole bunch more yet to come later in June. There's also a few exciting new inclusions building for 2019's festival, which we'll discuss later. Though, safe to say, this'll be another one of those classic Dashville events we all want to be part of. So best don't delay with grabbing your tickets. All options are currently available (except for Early Birds which have now sold out).
Archie Roach, Tami Neilson (NZ), The Kill Devil Hills, Emily Wurramara, Kevin Bennett & the Flood, Fanny Lumsden, Albi & the Wolves (NZ), Skyscraper Stan & The Commission Flats, Hannah Aldridge (US), The Re-mains, Archer & Kangaroos with Machine Guns, Ahlia Williams, Leo Rondeau (US), Little Quirks, Suicide Swans, Andy Abra & The Big River Bands, plus plenty more to com

FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING
MICHELLE WELLHAM
Through a series of figurative ceramic sculptures, Michelle Wellham's research considers that violence of a domestic nature is closely connected with the way that gender is constructed and performed. It uses theatrical tableaux to contrast tropes of masculinity with feminine forms presented as subordinate in order to present a non-verbal testimony of abusive experience.
SCATTERED
LOLITA MANUKIAN
The Armenian Genocide in 1915 forever changed Armenian history and the landscape of migration in the twentieth century. 104 years later issues of displacement and trauma still bind Armenians from all over the world through a thread of collective memory and the eternal quest for identity and belonging. Scattered is an installation that explores Armenian symbolism to tell a narrative of journey and diversity whilst portraying the universal struggle of acknowledging the past.

Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 4 PM – 6 PM
40 Annie St,Wickham, Newcastle, New South Wales 2293
Strangers in Paradise ’is Shelagh Lummis’ third solo exhibition at Art Systems Wickham. Lummis is a landscape painter whose recent works often present as open-ended narratives, which allow for other interpretations. In the context of this exhibition the title describes the artist as a curious tourist with a fascination for the different, the beautiful and the bizarre. The artworks’ subject matter is taken from photographic and drawn references of recent travels within and outside of Australia. With oil paint and a gestural hand as mediator, the artist has created an exhibition of works that aim to open a conversation about human passage through unfamiliar landscapes, and what we take away from the experience as a visitor.
The exhibition Strangers in Paradise Continues until 4pm Sunday June 23 2019.

Soul Movers
June 28, 2019
9:00pm - 12:30am Soul Movers
You want a word to describe the Soul Movers? How about electric.
The Soul Movers have returned from playing shows from LA to NYC at the same time recording a sizzling new album at many of the legendary studios of the South: Sun & Royal Studios in Memphis and FAME and Muscle Shoals Studios in Alamaba. With their sonic pilgrimage now recorded - visually and sonically.
The Soul Movers return home with bad road food stories, hotel hi-jinks and long roads full of new material which they can't wait to share in live shows with their fans back home.
The Soul Movers delved deep into their musical DNA to create an album that spans not only the spectrum of their musical influences but attempts to do justice to their deep passion for soul, the many that came before them, and how those voices and sounds have influenced them in such personal and lasting ways. The US live shows and recording trip really was a musical identity search and pilgrimage of epic proportions! With a musical spectrum reaching over Soul and Pop, Blues and Rock - the band travelled from LA to NY finding legends to collaborate and record with, developing their talents & abilities, and making their wildest music-making dreams come true.
Originally formed by Lizzie, (with Deniz Tek) ARIA Hall of Famer and legendary guitarist Murray Cook joining Lizzie at the helm in 2015. The group has evolved over the years, with the line-up now including original bass player Andy Newman with well-known drummers Stu Wilson, Calvin Welsch and Glenn Abbott joining the magical keys-man Marko Simec for a national album release in 2019.
Fans reach out for The Soul Movers' music with both arms finding music that resonates deep in their hearts with powerful messages that make life, and all its experiences powerfully real, utterly communal and something when survived we all grow from. Apart from that, just pure fun and wild musical excitement and of course ultimate dancing music!

LEE COULTER & DIXIE MAXWELL
Tickets: ga $16.85
When you start something new, you don’t expect success at first attempt. But when unsigned singer-songwriters Lee Coulter & Dixie Maxwell teamed up for the first time, their single “We You Me” shot to the top of the itunes singles chart in Australia and New Zealand.
It was no accident. “Overnight success” doesn’t apply when there are decades of paying dues between the two of them. As two seasoned singer songwriters - Coulter originally from Brisbane, Australia and Maxwell from San Diego, CA (with a year stint in the Nashville scene) - they have quietly honed their crafts in the background of cafes, bars and restaurants across the USA.
On his own, Coulter and his soulful folk songs were deemed the “discovery of 2011” by Sirius XM’s Coffee House channel. He's opened for iconic artists such as Tom Jones and the late Chuck Berry, and shared the stage with Jason Mraz. Martin Sexton, who John Mayer calls “one of the most treasured singer-songwriters I've ever heard in my life,” even stated that “the world needs more Lee Coulter songs.”
On her own, Maxwell, with her vulnerable songwriting and distinctly soft yet magnetic delivery, wins you over from the very first note by empowering her audience to listen to their own inner voice as she explores themes of hope, longing and freedom. She has had songs placed in major motion pictures and opened for artists such as Andy Grammar.
Together, their sound is exponential. It’s like modern indie-folk meets a classic movie. Encouraged by this fact, the success of their first single and a Kickstarter that reached their goal in just 2 days, they have now teamed up for a full duo album as “Lee Coulter & Dixie Maxwell,” to be released in late May this year, and will be touring Australia to play both solo and duo sets for their new fans down under.

DAVE WELLS
Tickets: $13.30
There are certain writers who command moving melodies and lyrics in equal measure. Dave Wells is one of those artists. The gifted musician has quickly garnered a word-of-mouth reputation as one of the Hunter's finest songwriters and performers; a master craftsman whose songs creep up on you and cut deep.
“Dave Wells has mastered the honest and beautiful. His songs soar, and his performances soothe.” KIM CHURCHILL
Dave embraces his audience through passionate performances, moving them with a voice that recalls the likes of Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke and Neil Finn. His spirit on stage engages and captivates, and after several sell out shows since the album’s release, Dave continues to deliver uniquely intimate and memorable performances across the nation and abroad

A HUGE EXHIBITION OF CHINA'S TERRACOTTA WARRIORS IS COMING TO THE NGV
It's one of two immersive exhibitions focusing on ancient and modern Chinese art heading to the Victorian gallery next winter.
Back in 1982, Melbourne played host to one of China's most important ancient artworks: a collection of statues known as The Terracotta Army. Crafted between 221–206 BCE and first discovered in the Shaanxi province in 1974, it made its international debut at the National Gallery of Victoria — and now, 37 years later, it's returning for the NGV's 2019 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series.
Dubbed Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality, the five-month exhibition will feature eight warrior figures and two life-size horses from The Terracotta Army, alongside two half-size replica bronze chariots that are each drawn by four horses. They were created during the reign of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang and were buried near his tomb more than 2200 years ago. The pieces coming to Melbourne only represent a fraction of the entire work, which numbers more than 8000 figures in total.
If you're wondering how big of a deal the statues are, the answer is very. The Terracotta Army is considered one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century and has also been described as the 'Eighth' Wonder of the World. Displaying at the NGV from May 24 to October 13, 2019, the selected pieces will be accompanied by more than 150 other ancient Chinese treasures sourced from museums and Shaanxi archaeological sites. Expect to rove your eyes over priceless gold, jade and bronze artefacts that date back more than 3000 years, charting China's artistry across the country's formative period.
Looking to the present as well as the past, the NGV's winter season will also celebrate acclaimed Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang. His work is no stranger to Australia — in 2014, Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art hosted its own showcase — however, his Melbourne exhibition will feature all new pieces. With Cai known for his large-scale installations, The Transient Landscapewill include 10,000 porcelain birds suspended in a spiral formation, in an artwork that links to The Terracotta Army. Specifically, it'll create a 3D version of a calligraphic drawing that depicts Mount Li, which is where Qin Shi Huang and his terracotta warriors were buried.
Another of Cai's new works will feature a porcelain sculpture of peonies placed in the middle of a 360-degree gunpowder, with his entire show taking inspiration from Chinese culture and philosophy. The world-renowned talent will also help design Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality, making the two concurrent exhibitions as immersive as possible.
'Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality' and 'Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape' will exhibit as part of the NGV International's Melbourne Winter Masterpieces presentation, running from May 24 to October 13, 2019. For further details or to buy tickets, visit the NGV website.

Wolfmother confirmed to headline a HUGE 2019 Scene & Heard Festival
After a massive 2018, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Scene & Heard couldn’t get any bigger, right?
Well, you’d be wrong because the lineup for the 2019 festival, which kicks off at Wickham Park on Sunday 10 November, has dropped overnight and it’s a doozy!
Leading the charge this year are Aussie heavy rockers Wolfmother who are fresh from a massive Splendour In The Grass gig and an international tour.
Amazing hitmaker Alex Lloyd will also be marking a milestone at this year’s festival – the 20th anniversary of his platinum-selling debut album Black The Sun – a record Alex will perform in full on the Scene & Heard stage.
The treats just keep coming, too with the 2019 bill rounded out by rockers Eskimo Joe and Even, crowd favourites Sneaky Sound System and the glorious indie power pop of Jebediah and Magic Dirt.
Wow!
To put the icing on the cake, Newcastle will also host the “Don’t Come Monday Stage” – a party zone designed to evoke only the best memories of the boiler room.
Championed this year by The Potbelleez DJ’s, the stage will feature Andy Murphy and John Course.
Scene & Heard is more than a festival. It’s about creating a connection to a time. A time before people cared about ‘likes’, and festival moments weren’t Instagram opportunities but collective memories.
Those wanting to create new memories and relive the old ones can head here to register for the pre-sale.
Members pre-sale begins Tuesday 11 June from 9am.
General public tickets are on sale Wednesday 12 June from 9am
