RADIO MOSCOW (USA) - NEWCASTLE
Thursday, June 28 at 8 PM - 11 PM
Thu 28 June NEWCASTLE THE WICKO 8pm $25/30 w supports
California power-trio Radio Moscow have just announced their return to Australia with a two week tour planned for down under in June/July of this year.
The hard-hitting band have carved their own sonic niche in international Blues, Rock and Psych circles since their formation in 2003, regularly playing some of the world's largest festivals including Ride Festival, Desert Daze, Electric Funeral, Psycho California and more, also having supported the likes of Graveyard, Witchcraft, Joe Bonamassa and Pentagram throughout Europe, North America, South America and Australasia. Their retro sound, fuelled by the likes of Hendrix, Sabbath, Zeppelin and Cream, bring waves of fuzzy hard-rocking riffs and sweaty, cranked up Blues straight to the listener in an epic and much-acclaimed live experience.
This tour will mark the outfit's fifth studio album 'New Beginnings', a powerful 10-track Blues Rock ride, amongst the midst of a recent worldwide signing to Century Media Records. Previously produced by the likes of Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), Radio Moscow regularly receive the highest of critical acclaim with the New York Music Daily citing their previous release “Live in California” as the Best Heavy Psych Album of 2016.
Radio Moscow will appear at the The Wickham Park Hotel in Newcastle on Thursday 28 June. $25/30 8pm doors. Supports to be announced. *Limited Capacity 18+

Creative collaboration incubates extraordinary exhibition
A group of Newcastle artists and makers from the Creative Incubator have collaborated to create Incubating Fibre, an innovative exhibition opening at Newcastle’s Timeless Textiles in May.
The Creator Incubator opened in Hamilton North last year. It is a shared creative space supporting a diverse community of artists, designers, makers and mentors. The Creator Incubator is partnering with Timeless Textiles Gallery to present Incubating Fibre.
Co-curators Braddon Snape and Anne Kempton challenged 16 artists to explore textile art to create this exhibition.
“All the artists explored materials, techniques, traditions and history of textiles,” Timeless Textiles’ owner Anne Kempton said. “They rose to the challenge we set them, creating extraordinarily unique and vibrant artworks for Incubating Fibre.”
The contributing artists incorporated fibre art techniques into their existing practice to create the exhibition works. Incubating Fibreprovided an opportunity for them to create, explore and play outside their current practices. Each artwork will incorporate at least one of the many fibre art techniques, both traditional and devised.
Well known Novocastrian artists involved include Bridie Watt, Graham Wilson, Braddon Snape, Jon Pryer, Louise Fischer, Szuszy Timar, Patrick Mavety, Marlene Houston, Leslie Duffin, Lyndal Campbell, Gavin Vitullo, Natasha Lenaghan, Janita Ayton, Margot Broug, Giselle Penn and John Moroney.
The exhibition will run until 9 June.

Kindred of the Dust: Jess Forster
Emerging textile artist Jess Forster uses natural materials from her Riverina home’s environment to create the evocative Kindred of the Dust exhibition, opening at Newcastle’s Timeless Textiles in June.
Forster’s sculptured felt artworks feature locally collected fibres, native seeds and earth pigments. Her work is an experimental inquiry into the emotionally constructed relationship between humans and the natural environments that surround us. The Kindred of the Dust collection questions our connections to place.
The works are embedded and dyed into powerful topographic landscapes, hollowed felt totems, and three-dimensional limbs. Some pieces have been left outside at various locations that are meaningful to Forster. This has allowed natural weathering, colouring and the germination of seeds. The forms have become a conceptual mapping-tool. They are physical representations of Forster’s land and location. They also seek to capture her emotional connection to place and ‘home’.
“I feel a deep affinity with the bush, waterways and land formations that surround where I live, and where I grew up,” Forster said. “My current work explores the contrast between our ‘nesting’ and ‘nomadic’ instincts. That is, the magnetising pull of place and home versus an overwhelming curiosity to journey.”
Forster’s works are observations of the cyclical, miniscule natural processes in our world. She observes a tiny seedling poking through the earth, ant highways, dripping sap, opening seed-pods, bark of ancient gums and the organic patterns of silt drying on the edges of billabongs.
“I like to imagine these tiny happenings out of their context, under a microscope, from the air, or as if I was nestled inside,” Forster said.
Forster graduated from a Bachelor Design/Art Education from UNSW in 2015. She worked as a Textile and Visual Arts teacher before working in the Netherlands in 2016 for textile artist Claudy Jongstra. She received a Create NSW Young Regional Artist Scholarship to help develop her practice and has been a part of numerous exhibitions. These include ‘Push the Medium’ at the Narrandera Arts Centre, and three solo exhibitions in Wagga Wagga, Tumbarumba and Orange.
The exhibition runs from 13 June to 8 July with the opening on 14 June 2018

"My paintings and sculptures capture something of the relationship and transitions which occur between chaos and order. Where the imagination is set with the task to interpret information in a meaningful, subjective way or to allow this visual information to remain chaotic. Both the orderly and chaotic sit within the same spectrum." - Ben Kenning

THURS 24 MAY - SUN 10 JUN 2018
Official opening: Saturday 26 May, 2-4pm
Beer kindly sponsored by @murraysbrewing
Embedded brings Alison Smith, Ahn Wells and Caelli Jo Brooker together for a third time, exhibiting their most recent work and exploring some of the key motifs and forms embedded within the trio’s ongoing creative work and exhibition collaborations.
As each artist works in parallel, trusting the outcomes of the other, the curious and subliminal layers of unintentional collaboration are most revealed through the exhibition and installation processes itself, as unconscious connections emerge through the processes of drawing familiar, but idiosyncratic practices together.

EXHIBITION OPENING: MEMORANDA | SATURDAY 2 JUNE AT 2PM
a short note designating something to be remembered; a record, a note to self
This group exhibition brings together friends, students and colleagues who have connected through their practice, their learning and exhibitions over the past decade.
It brings together the shared ideas of a creative community, telling of the continuity of stories and histories, and the connections and commonalities between makers.
Memoranda features works that were influenced by the theories and influences of an art school and its people, and considers the creative process within the community and context of a teaching and learning environment.
Collectively, the works are a ‘memoranda’ - a note to self for all those who have made art, here, from 2008 to 2018.

The Merewether Fats’ Blues Jam
Thursday | 7pm | Free Admission
The Merewether Fats’ Blues Jam has been running on the first Thursday of each month for over 10 years. The night is a celebration of Blues, roots and folk musical styles.
Founded by Mark ‘Merewether Fats’ Salter the blues jam has become a hub for the music community, young, young at heart, musicians of all levels and most importantly music fans. It’s strictly blues music and Fats had very stringent guidelines on what blues is. The main condition is that it came from the soul of the player.
The night usually kicks off at 7:30pm with an introductory set from Fat’s house band to set the tone. From there it’s open to all for about 3 songs at a time. We try to cultivate a wide variety of artists to play acoustic and delta styles, Chicago shuffles, Detroit boogies, Bo Diddley rhythms and it just gets deeper.
Jammers can play solo, duo or as an ensemble. They can borrow the house band and however, there’s plenty of great players to to pick up a band on the night. Singers, harmonica players, keyboardists, drummers, bass players, guitar players… even banjo players. We get first time performers and seasoned veterans, sometimes on stage at the same time sharing a passion for blues.
Mark ‘Merewether Fats’ Salter passed away in 2016 and the community will continue to champion this part of his legacy in classic blues brothers style. To make sure it’s accessible to future generations and get people hooked on the rhythm of the human condition. As Fats would always say ‘…blues is sad music that makes you feel good.’ By the way, no pedals, bring your instrument and a lead (tuner helps). Amps and kit on stage, say g’day to the guys in the house band on the night to get your name on the run sheet.”

BEN HARPER & CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE
Sydney Opera House - Concert Hall, Sydney, NSW
Sun 22 Jul 2018, 07:30 PM
Details: Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite
Grammy-Award winning, multi-platinum-selling artists BEN HARPER and CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE are bringing their second joint album “No Mercy in This Land” to stages across Australia this July, announcing headline shows in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and Sydney.
These shows follow their announcement as headliners at the now sold-out 2018 Splendour in the Grass Festival in Byron Bay.
Touring as a five piece line up, Ben and Charlie are continuing their 5 year-old collaboration, releasing their first new music together since the 2013 release of their collaborative album “Get Up!,” which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Blues Albums Chart, winning a Grammy Award in 2014 for “Best Blues Album.” A musical expression of the kinship between the two, the album recounts both Ben and Charlie’s personal stories and adds to the sonic history of American struggle and survival.
“Charlie Musselwhite is that very rare and hallowed place where blues past, present and future collide,” says Ben. “He transforms notes into emotions that feel both hauntingly familiar and brand new, as if hearing them for the first time every time. He is a living legend whose harmonica playing should be beamed into outer space to search for other life forms.”
“On stage or in the studio - working with Ben Harper holds the same excitement I experienced working with Chicago blues legends back in the day,” says Charlie. “I think it is safe to say that Ben has reinvented the Blues in a great way: playing modern while preserving the feel. I am honoured and privileged to be a participant in this project.”
At first glance, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite might seem an unlikely pairing. While Ben grew up in in the tree lined Southern California college town of Claremont, a bastion of culture and liberalism just east of Los Angeles, Charlie was raised in Memphis during the time of rockabilly and Sun Records. But while the two might have come to their musical knowledge in different eras and places, each of them possesses an enduring hunger for musical knowledge that came to them early.
The great Willie Dixon called blues, “the facts of life expressed through words and song.” “No Mercy In This Land” is that kind of record. It’s the sound of pain and perseverance, it’s a meditative church and a roaring fuzzed out celebration. Experience two unimaginably talented musicians as Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite hit the road this July across Australia.
The White Album Concert
28 & 29 July
It’s one of the most successful Beatles events ever staged in Australia. After two sold-out tours in 2009 and 2014, Chris Cheney (The Living End), Phil Jamieson(Grinspoon), Tim Rogers (You Am I), and ARIA Award-winning solo artist Josh Pyke are reuniting for a 2018 tour in a nod to the 50th anniversary of this very special album.
Few records echo down through the years like the White Album.
Coming after India, but before the split, the White Album was the sound of John, Paul, George and Ringo throwing everything they’d learned into their musical blender. This major work bursts with variety, creativity, experimentation, and the genius of The Beatles during one of their most intense, fertile periods. One of the 10 greatest albums of all time according to Rolling Stone it’s 30 songs veer from the populist stomp of Back in the U.S.S.R and the mind-bending Happiness is a Warm Gun to the melodious sorrow of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, the ska pop fun of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, and the hard rock prototype Helter Skelter.
Chris, Josh, Phil & Tim are backed by a 17-piece rock orchestra including guitars, strings, horns and two drummers with musical direction by Rex Goh.
The White Album songs will be performed in track order, starting with Back in the USSR and closing with Good Night. And for those in the know – yes, that includes Revolution 9.
Two performances on Sat 28 July and Sunday 29 July
Standard tickets from $89.00 | $8.50 Booking fee applies per transaction

The living embodiment of swing, one of the most elegant and irresistible sounds that ever shook the western world, The Legendary Count BasieOrchestra have announced they will tour Australia and New Zealand in July/August 2018.
Directed by veteran trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, the 18-piece Count Basie Orchestra features a peerless array of instrumentalists with combined credentials that have topped the upper echelons of the international jazz world for decades.
From Billie Holiday to Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra to Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan to Ella Fitzgerald, the Count Basie Orchestra has provided the supremely distinctive sound and swing behind some of the greatest singers of the modern age.
Current members still include trombonist Clarence Banks, hired all those years ago by Basie himself, as well as former members of Stan Kenton’s, Benny Goodman’s and Lionel Hampton's ensembles.
Special guest vocalist is the remarkable Carmen Bradford, who has performed with artists including Tony Bennett, James Brown, Wynton Marsalis, Frank Sinatra and George Benson. Count Basie heard Bradford sing in the early eighties and immediately hired her as vocalist for his Orchestra, a role she has continued in to this day.
A special feature this tour will be the Orchestra’s tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald and the immortal Louis Armstrong. The Basie Band had a strong history with both artists and their reverence for them will shine through in this homage to these two greats of jazz.
The tradition of excellence has continued beyond the Count's passing in 1984 to make the Orchestra a permanent fixture in Down Beat and Jazz Times polls throughout the '80s and '90s. The latest of a total 18 Grammy Awards was bestowed as recently as their Count Plays Duke album of '99.
Simply put, the Count Basie Orchestra is the real deal, a who’s who of the best swing players the world has to offer. For Australian and New Zealand audiences, this tour is a very special occasion and a rare chance to see a truly elite jazz ensemble staged in some of our most prestigious venues.
