NEWCASTLE GIG ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT 13 OCT 2017

Hopefully we may get a great weekend of weather to enjoy the Chinese Noodle Night and the Cultural Festival. See info - scroll to China Week in this guide.
The Blues Rattlers are in town,(a blues band we don’t get to see very often), on Saturday at Jewels Tavern with Steve Edmonds and the Jungle Kings  for the Blues, Brews and Craft Beer Festival.
So much on this weekend,  lots of bands and art openings.

The Carol King stage show BEAUTIFUL is on now in Sydney. Tickets through Ticketmaster. Season is on now until February.

IN REVIEW by Richard McLeod

Went to the Catho last Sun to see Melbourne Street, what a great afternoon on the outdoor stage with the dynamic rock and roll band of that calibre playing a lot of classics you just don't hear other bands playing.  Choc Eriwata certainly has one of the best soul voices in this town. As an outdoor venue it has upgraded to include new shade sails over the entire seated area – third major change I have seen over the last 17 years. Haven’t been there for so long.
Ngariki and the Dastardly Bastards were great, even with some great jazz jams – what a versatile band.

Currently touring extensively through North America, GEORGE THOROGOOD AND THE DESTROYERS will bring their Rock Party Tour to Australia for two shows only this summer. The Rock Party Tour promises to raise the bar, rock the house and tear off the roof like never before, unleashing at Melbourne’s Forum Theatre on January 22 and Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on January 24.
With more than 40 years of touring and recording, 15 million albums sold and 8,000 live shows, George and his longtime band – Jeff Simon (drums, percussion), Bill Blough (bass guitar), Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone) – remain among the most relentless and relevant classic rock acts on tour today.
The band has amassed a catalog of hits that includes “Who Do You Love,” “I Drink Alone,” “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” “Move It On Over,” “Get A Haircut,” and 1982’s anthemic, “Bad To The Bone.” The band has released 16 studio albums – including six Gold and two Platinum discs on Rounder, EMI and Capitol – but it’s their powerhouse live performances that have made GT&D legendary.
“We play for a different audience every night, and that keeps it fresh. There are people who’ve never seen us before, and we have to impress them. There are fans that keep coming back, and we want to surprise them,” Thorogood said. This is my job,” he added. “I’ve always loved it, and I love it now more than ever.”
From coast to coast, the critics agree:
“I’m happy to say, after all these years, that George is still ‘Bad To The Bone’ and he’s never let go of the true spirit of rock ’n roll!” L.A. Daily News
“Thorogood is a guitar-blazing revivalist whose enthusiasm and showmanship make the music fresh.” Baltimore Sun
“He’s got charisma and personality to burn, a fact that becomes evident the moment he walks on stage.” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
This year Thorogood released Party of One, the first solo album of his 40-year-plus career, marking a true back-to-the-roots approach for the singer and guitarist.

Virtual Wright: Exploring the Hollyhock House
Wednesday 11 - Saturday 28 October 2017
Long regarded as one of the world’s greatest houses, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Aline Barnsdall (“Hollyhock”) House in Los Angeles is one of the architect’s largest and most enigmatic works. However, having been closed to the public for many years, some of the important formal and spatial properties of this heritage-listed masterpiece are now difficult to access, experience or understand.
Using new computer models of the house, this exhibition undertakes a design-based exploration of its invisible or forgotten properties. Employing a combination of virtual reality simulations, rapid prototyped models and unique sliced cross-sections through the house, the exhibition demonstrates Wright’s mastery of scale, form and representation, while also revealing its normally hidden bones. This dissection of the work includes not only its architecture and interior design, but also its furniture. The entire technologically-enabled process seeks to reveal this design in a completely new light.
This exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of the American architect’s birth and features the work of Ian Owen, Nicholas Foulcher, Samantha Watt, and Michael J Ostwald.
The Essence of ShelterWednesday 11 - Saturday 28 October 2017
Your house is your castle, terracotta and corrugated iron keep your living room dry and brick and Gyprock keep out the cold.  But what if there were no factories to encase you in luxury?  No trucks to haul the bricks?  Would you turn to loggers and bullocks to cut and mill timber for a bushman’s slab hut?  Would you ask an elder how their people made themselves a home?  Or what if you had only a pair of hands and a hatchet?
In most parts of Australia, the landscape generally offers the means for human construction of a basic shelter.  The earth and the bush provide a rich palette of materials and plenty of room for innovation.  The Hunter Valley offers its own robust typology supported by blackbutt, grass and bark.  In this exhibition, five students studying architecture explore techniques for primitive housing construction using materials readily available in the Australian bush.
With the guidance of local researchers, each student was handed a hatchet. After a few days in the Northern Hunter Valley bush, a series of shelter prototypes were built in response to a challenging design brief: construct a shelter that would last a year and support a group of five people living under primitive conditions.

They include one-of-a-kind silk fabrics used to create art wear and wall art, silk organza clothing and wall pieces made of printed, dyed and stitched teabag papers.

It's a special birthday for one of Sydney's favourite art events, as 2017 marks 21 strong years from Sculpture by the Sea. Kicking off on Thursday, October 19, two clicks of Australia's most picturesque coastline in Bondi will be transformed into a living, breathing artscape. Over 100 pieces from both Australian and international artists will be on show, including one from James Dive, creator of 2006's now infamous melting ice cream truck.
There's also the chance for a chin wag with the artists themselves at the Aqualand Artist Talks series, which will take place each Saturday and Sunday of the exhibition. Plus, it coincides with this year's Sydney Sculpture Conference if you can't get enough of the art form. So keep your fingers crossed for good weather — the whole thing runs until November 5.
SCULPTURES IN THE VINEYARDS
This arts and cultural festival brings together art, food and, of course, wine in the Hunter Valley.
Sculpture in the Vineyards brings an artistic bend to the Hunter Valley with its annual arts and cultural festival, held throughout four independent vineyards in the Wollombi Valley from October 28 through December 3. This free public exhibition features site-specific, large scale sculptures which transform the boutique vineyards into exhibition parks.
The celebration combines art, food and, of course, wine throughout the month, with tastings happening at each of the vineyard cellar doors. Visitors can also take guided tours, attend artist talks and workshops, learn about local Aboriginal history and feast at a wine and food degustation. Events will also take place at the nearby historic Wollombi Village.
Entry into the exhibitions along the Wollombi Valley Wine Trail is free and open daily from 10am–6pm, with additional special events happening across the month.

Calling all music fans! Come along to The Stag at Mayfield to help us celebrate real music!
The Double Up Lounge is a night where you’ll hear DJs spin all vinyl sets like nowhere else in Newcastle!
You’ll hear the exotic, the rockin’, the smokin’ and the wild sounds of the original blues, rhythm & soul, afrobeat, rockabilly, popcorn, jazz, ska & rocksteady! Sounds coming from as far as Chicago, New Orleans, Nigeria, Maitland and Jamaica!
So grab a bunch of your mates, and join us over a beer as we enjoy well-loved classics, and discover never-before-heard gems! Hosted by DJs Dan Phelan & Big Juz Moon with guest DJs each month.
The choice is yours: come along or we risk “Leaving the next generation with nothing but recycled, digitally-sampled techno-grooves, quasi-synth rhythms, pseudo-songs of violence-laden gangsta-rap, acid pop, and simpering, saccharine, soulless slush. Depart now and you forever separate yourselves from the vital American legacies of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Memphis Slim, Blind Boy Fuller, Louie Jordon, Little Walter, Big Walter, Sonnyboy Williamson I and II, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, Elvis Presley, Lieber and Stoller, and Robert K. Weiss.” (Elwood Blues)
On the second Thursday of every month.
7.30-10.30pm
This is an 18+ event.

Cass Eager – Ain’t No Stopping Me
Friday 27 October 2017 | Doors 7pm $15 + BF Presale
Cass Eager has a brand new beat and she’s hitting the road with her band this October to send new single ‘Ain’t No Stopping Me’ off into the world.
Strange Daddy produced the new track which is somewhat of a stylistic departure from Cass’ previous work. Lyrically, it’s a testament to her resolve, and sonically it has a vintage Motown charm that hints at an Amy Winehouse swagger but sounds like she’d be more at home drinking tequila with Elle King. As always, Cass has got “more soul than heaven on a busy day”. (Brag)
She plays with her band, or alone, and while both are different magnificent beasts, one thing is constant – her voice. It carries like the wind and slams you right in your gut where you want it to. She could ‘sing the phone book to you and you wouldn’t get bored’, says Diesel.
She also loves a good story and a good laugh, and her shows are just as much about heartwarming and entertaining tales as they are about the music.
Some artists take a hiatus to write, some to travel, and others to reignite their creative inspiration. Cass Eager has done something a little more pragmatic with her recent years, and the result is two small children, Hank and Lois. But she’s back – better than ever – and ready to tell the world to step aside with her new single.

Chris Jagger
Sunday 5 November 2017 | 7pm | $23.50 Presale
Chris Jagger obviously comes from rock royalty. Watching his old brother Mick ascend with his band The Rolling Stones, Chris was soon turned onto music as well. He and Charlie Hart first met when Charlie was playing with psychedelic band 117 in Cambridge in the 1960’s and have remained friends ever since.
Together they have written many songs for a series of albums the pick of which will be released on BMG, available now as a download and as a physical release Sept. 1st 2017. The pair offer a great show, combining Charlie’s mastery of various instruments, including piano, accordion and fiddle, playing both their own tunes and some covers from Clifton Chenier to Professor Longhair as well as Cajun fiddle tunes.
They have toured across Europe, the USA and Australia over the years and are still going strong. Chris has written and recorded over 100 tunes from his first LP on Asylum records in the 1970’s. Charlie has worked with Ronnie Lane, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and Roger Daltrey amongst others.
Willie and The Bandits
Thursday 9th November 2017 | Doors 7pm $12 + BF presale, $15 door
With their fresh approach to blues rock music, Wille and the Bandits have been assertively carving a place for themselves in Europe’s music scene, developing a reputation as one of the best live acts around and capturing the imagination and interest of music lovers right across the globe.
The band was listed in the top ten must see bands at Glastonbury 2014 by BBC Radio 1 and was personally invited to perform on the German TV show Rockpalast; a musical institution of global import.
Essentially, Wille and the Bandits is a classic blues rock three piece, much in the vein of Cream or The Jimi Hendrix Experience and like these bands is pushing at the boundaries of their genre. Wille and the Bandits take their sound way beyond what is expected of such a traditional lineup.
The band combines three talented and committed musicians who come from very different musical backgrounds. Wille’s exquisite slide guitar playing and powerful vocals are given perfect momentum with Andy’s innovative drumming, while virtuoso Matt, with his 6 string bass and double bass, adds a class and polish rarely seen in a Rock act. The great musicianship with infectious songs has inspired praise from Rock legends such as Ian Paice, Joe Bonamassa and Francis Rossi.
Throughout a performance the band can be seen playing a range of instruments, sometimes simultaneously, sometimes switching between various guitars, basses, and percussion within the same song, giving the audience a complete performance which has seen the popularity of Wille and the Bandits grow at an exceptional rate.

Renowned for her gutsy but tender vocal style (which Jackie has jokingly referred to as ‘Dolly Parton meets Patti Smith’), Jackie was hand-picked by Missy Higgins to support her on the sold-out QLD leg of her 2007 “On A Clear Night” tour as part of the Australian national youth broadcaster Triple J’s Unearthed series. Jackie also performed for iconic QLD concert series Women In Voice at the QLD Performing Arts Centre and featured on SBS Television’s much-loved ‘RocKwiz’ dueting with Australian music legend Colin Hay. And it’s not just Australia that’s fallen in love with her, over the past few years Jackie’s performed extensively throughout Europe, the UK and Japan.

Guy Sebastian has hit the Australian airwaves again with his brand new single ‘High On Me’, out today through Sony Music Entertainment Australia. Written with Fiona Bevan (Ed Sheeran) and produced with Louis Schoorl and M-Phazes, ‘High On Me’ gives another tantalising taste of what’s to come from Sebastian’s forthcoming 10th studio album, CONSCIOUS, set for release on Friday October 27th, 2017. CONSCIOUS will be available to pre order from Friday September 8th.
Guy Sebastian has spent over a decade on the road, which has challenged him to maintain a healthy work / life balance and fuelled his conscious decision to spend more time at home over the last 12 months. Despite the huge task of writing and producing his 10th studio album, which in itself requires so much of his focus and energy, Guy decided that it was time to plant his feet and become grounded, even just for a moment.
Guy set himself goals. Mental, spiritual and physical goals. He pushed himself to the limit physically and mentally, forcing the realisation that he has never had a clearer outlook on life than he has right now. It has definitely been an awakening period for Guy and with that has come an invigorated positivity, which was the inspiration for the upbeat new single ‘High On Me’.
“I feel like I’ve had so many ah-ha moments this last year,” explains Guy. “One of the biggest is that every now and again everybody just needs a reason to let go, smile and dance. ‘High On Me’ came about while I was in Bali on a writing trip, surrounded by mountains and yoga enthusiasts who like me seemed high on life at the time! I really wanted to create a soulful earworm that would make young and old want to get up out of their chair and enjoy the moment.”
Stemming from a desire to release something fun and positive out, with a new appreciation for the age-old philosophy that what you put out into the universe comes back to you, ‘High On Me’ is that bit of fun we all need in our day. With its funky soul vibes that encourage a smirk and a groove, ‘High On Me’ is bound to make people smile.
To celebrate the release of his new album, Guy will be hitting the road this coming November on his CONSCIOUS TOUR with special guest, Matt Gresham.

Thoroughly steeped in the classic New Orleans keyboard canon - from Jelly Roll Morton to Fats Domino to Art Neville, James Booker, and beyond - Cleary uses that century's worth of pianisticbrilliance as a point of departure to forge his own unique and eclectic style. As heard in the widely varied grooves and textures of GoGo Juice, Cleary's sound incorporates such far-flung influencesas '70s soul, gospel music, funk, Afro-Caribbean (and especially Afro-Cuban) rhythms and more. "I love New Orleans R&B, " Cleary explains. "I'm a student of it - and a fan, first and foremost. Butthere's little point in just going back and re-recording the old songs - although on my live solo shows, especially in New Orleans, I make a point of trying to keep the fast- disappearing tradition ofthe R&B pianist/singer alive by playing the old songs that are in danger of being forgotten. As for recording, however, I think the greatest New Orleans R&B records are the ones that built on whatwent before but also added something new. By writing new songs you get to channel all the music you absorb through your own individual set of filters - and the fun is in seeing what emerges."
The Man
Born in Kent, England to a musical family, Jon Cleary epitomizes the fanaticism and inherent single mindedness of a musician who decides that he simply wasn't born where he was supposed to be.Like Dylan to New York, infatuated with the music of New Orleans throughout his entire childhood, as soon as he was old enough to leave school, Cleary took off for the Crescent City. When hisflight touched down he had the taxi take him straight to the Maple Leaf, a funky uptown bar which then featured such New Orleans piano legends as Roosevelt Sykes and James Booker. 35 yearsand 8 albums later - he's now a defining part of New Orleans musical heritage.

Australia's pop poet laureate

Following a record-breaking five sold out shows with Neil Finn in the Concert Hall, Australia's legendary punk poet Paul Kelly returns to the Opera House in electric form for his biggest headline show yet – performing a career-spanning set with a full band on the iconic harbourside Forecourt alongside special guest, Grammy Award-winner Steve Earle.
Marking 30 years since he released Under the Sun and the timeless 'To Her Door', Kelly now makes his long-awaited return to driving rock 'n' roll on the critically acclaimed new album, Life Is Fine. Uniting generations of fans and musicians alike with his lyrical genius and conversational melodies, the 10-time ARIA Award-winner now counts Courtney Barnett as a fan and hip-hop heavyweights A.B. Original as collaborators.
From St Kilda to Kings Cross to the Sydney Opera House and back, Kelly has hit a creative streak 20 albums deep that places him alongside Opera House alumni Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Following sold out Forecourt performances from The National, Florence + the Machine and Lorde, Paul Kelly will re-write the rulebook once again with a landmark performance from one of the nation's all-time greats.

David Roy Williams in collaboration with Principal Entertainment present Dweezil Zappa, son of the legendary Frank Zappa, celebrating 50 years of Zappa with a series of concerts and exclusive guitar masterclasses in Australia & New Zealand in early 2018.
Sheik Yerbouti next February, 2018 as the legendary music of Frank Zappa is celebrated live on stage by the man’s prodigiously talented son Dweezil Zappa and his band The Others of Intention.
Freak Out to some of the most inventive and wildly original music ever committed to tape! Discover Who Are The Brain Police as Dweezil conducts immaculate explorations and excavations of Frank’s 50 year old debut album. Take a drive with the Muffin Man along the Inca Roads in the Orange County Lumber Truck as Dweezil digs in for a suite mined from one of Frank Zappa’s most acclaimed albums, Joe’s Garage.
Dweezil will be whippin’ up a G-Spot Tornado, as he explores everything from the deepest album cuts through to the cult favourites that have made Frank Zappa and his music such an indelible influence on our musical culture.
Before you ask Is That All There Is? Dweezil will be holding exclusive and strictly limited guitar master classes and Q&A session before each show, exploring exciting new approaches to guitar that he has employed to play his dad’s most sophisticated and challenging melodies. So you can Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar, and take a step closer to mastering The Black Page, these masterclasses provide theories that destroy the boundaries that confine music creativity.
So don’t be a Zomby Woof, move like the Teen-Age Wind and grab a ticket before they are all gone, as The Son Of Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar shows you how it’s done.
