ALL THE KINGS MEN - LIZOTTES - SATURDAY NIGHT

Four of Australia's leading blues players are joining forces to salute for of the blues 'biggest and most influential artists.  There are few blues fans and guitarists who haven't fallen under the spell of the playing and vocals of BB King, Albert King, Freddie King and Earl King.  Now Australian performers Darren Jack, Ray Beadle, Grant Cummerford and Rosscoe Clark have put together a show to salute these blues greats, putting their own stamp on best known titles from the 4 icons. While BB, Albert & Freddie were all masters of the intense single line electric guitar lick, each is instantly recognisable, and Earl King, also a guitar boss, was one of the best and most original songwriters in the blues, and a major New Orleans figure.  Guitarists Darren Jack and Ray Beadle are worth exponents of highly charged emotional attack style of the Kings, and are widely recognised on the National Australian blues circuit.  In recent years both have been voted 'performer of the Year' by the Sydney Blues Society, and gone on to perform in The Memphis Blues Challenge.  Another Memphis Blues Challenger is Rosscoe Clark, the go-to blues drummer in Sydney, and enduring member of the veteran band The Cyril B.Bunter Band and the Foreday Riders, Bassist Grant Cummerford, despite his tender years, has clocked up many years on the Australian Blues scene, especially with Darren Jack and globe-trotting guitar virtuoso Jeff Lang.  These experienced players have an abundance of creed when it comes to the blues, and are ideally placed to serve up the best offerings of the four blues Giants.

Supported by Newcastle's own Whistle Dixie
Karise Eden's voice is powerful and raw in its authenticity, showing that she's lived a full and complex life despite her relative youth.  After busking and playing community festivals on the Central Coast, she was launched into the national spotlight in 2012 after being prompted by a friend to enter the first series of The Voice Australia.  Her blind audition was the clear standout, blowing away the judges and the live audience. That footage went viral and has since been viewed on YouTube 32 million times!  She went on to break sales & chart records before taking a break to find her feet again.  Karise Eden's shows are now a unique and very entertaining mix of her heart wrenching soulful voice with a relaxed and cheeky stage presence.  At her upcoming intimate venues, she will be performing soul songs that channel the greats of our time and some brand new songs she's working on for her upcoming album. Don't miss this one.

CONSALVO | LANKAS | MAHER
Please join the artists at the University Gallery for the exhibition launch
Saturday 18 FEBRUARY from 2pm
Refreshments will be served and all are welcome
Exhibition dates: 15 February – 18 March 2016
The University Gallery is delighted to collaborate with Gallery 139 to present CONSALVO | LANKAS | MAHER, an extensive exhibition profiling the work of three Gallery 139 artists, Dino Consalvo, Peter Lankas and Paul Maher.
Building on the success of CONSALVO | LANKAS | MAHER at the Depot Gallery in Sydney in 2016, curator Ahn Wells has recontextualised the exhibition for the University Gallery, bringing together new works from their studios that focus on practice and continual developments in defining and refining subject matter, materiality and process.
The three artists live and work in Newcastle and their practices respond to the environment in different ways. They each employ their own unique visual language to reflect on the landscape around them, whether suburban, urban or natural. Through working and exhibiting together, they as a group enjoy a collegial frankness in their discussions that brings a freshness to these independent approaches and evident mastery of medium.

DAVE GRANEY N' THE CORAL SNAKES
Dave Graney n' the Coral Snakes were THE stand alone act in Australia during the 90s. Nobody stood near them. They cut through with wit, flash and weirdness and flew their freak flag for four albums while Dave Graney used street slang and literate word bombs to fully state his case. Due to popular demand the band bring it all back to Sydney for one night only.

MUD MORGANFIELD (US)
In 1954, the eldest son of Blues great Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield) was born. Mud Morganfield grew up surrounded by music, particularly the Blues, and played music all of his life; starting with the drums his dad gave him as a child, then moving on to the bass guitar.
Possessing a baritone voice very much like his father's, and blessed with similar vocal phrasing and a sense of how to command a stage, Morganfield has became a popular draw on the Blues club and festival circuit; mixing both original songs and Muddy Waters classics into his live sets.

JOHN OLSEN: The City's Son
5 November 2016 - 19 February 2017 | Newcastle Art Gallery
Although he is a celebrated master painter and an acknowledged Australian living treasure, John Olsen OBE, AO still describes himself as a 'Newcastle boy.' Born in Newcastle in 1928, Olsen returns home in November to open an exhibition at Newcastle Art Gallery that he says captures the essence of his birthplace. As part of the exhibition, he will also introduce a major new painting created specifically for our city and region. Image: John Olsen OBE, AO in front of Life Burst 1964 at Newcastle Art Gallery, 2016 Image courtesy Newcastle Art Gallery.
JOHN OLSEN: The City’s Son features works personally chosen by the artist that reflect his affection for Newcastle and the Hunter region’s waterways; the beaches, harbour, lake, river and wetlands. The exhibition will showcase more than 35 works of art from the Gallery’s own Olsen collection including ceramics, prints and paintings spanning 1954 -1992 in addition to selected works on loan from private collections around the world. This is the first time that all of the Gallery's Olsen works will be on display together.
In April, Olsen made a helicopter flight over the Hunter region to gain inspiration for the new painting and to "get up in the air to see the marvellous Hunter River with its branches and tendrils feeding the landscape."
Olsen has said that identity and a sense of place are equally important in his art and that he sees Newcastle's ‘sense of place’ as firmly tied to its connection to the Hunter River. He says the new painting reflects the uniqueness of his birthplace and its natural beauty, with the sun burning bright and the river a deep, vibrant blue with its sense of flow and motion.
"Newcastle is undergoing a rebirth, and I want Novocastrians to see themselves differently. I want everyone in the Hunter to see in this painting what they already feel and think about the place where they live," he said.
The completed new work of art will be unveiled at the launch event for the exhibition on Friday 4 November and will be on display at the Gallery throughout the exhibition. The Gallery, Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation and the Art Gallery Society are collaborating to acquire the new painting to keep it permanently in Newcastle.
"The rightful home for what we know will be an iconic work is Newcastle Art Gallery - for future Novocastrians and Australians to view and appreciate the jewel that is the Hunter region," said Newcastle Art Gallery Manager Lauretta Morton.
"The community can be a part of this exciting opportunity by making a donation that will help us to keep the painting permanently in our Gallery."
For more information about making a donation or purchasing a raffle ticket for a chance to win a framed handsigned limited edition fine art reproduction by John Olsen, visit the Gallery's website at www.nag.org.au

Having released their ARIA # 5 album Shift in May; levelling their sold out major city national Shift tour; performing on the at the 2016 AFL Grand Final; headlining festivals around the country; and scoring nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Australian Live Act at this year’s ARIA Awards – so far it has been a year in which the kings of Australian rock reclaimed their throne after a five-year hiatus after their 2011 ARIA-Award winning album, The Ending Is Just The Beginning Repeating.
There is no rest in sight, the band are set to roll on into 2017 hitting regional areas of Australia for their Staring Down The Highway Tour, starting in March. These regional shows will see the band play a series of mediums-sized venues and clubs, allowing fans the chance to see them play some of their most intimate shows in years.
They will be supported by Australia’s premier Psychedelic Reggae Ska Doom Metal Punk Rock band From Hell and triple j faves The Bennies, who will bring a whole-new brand of punk rock energy and exuberance to the stage, sure to wow TLE fans with their high-flying antics. Having previously supported punk heavyweights like NOFX AND Rancid, they’re no strangers to playing with punk rock royalty, and they’re set to claim another picture card when they head out with The Living End in March.
