Aretha Franklin
Amazing Grace
With live gospel choir and special guests
Live Music & Southern Supper – 6:45 to 7:30pm
The perfect start to the Long Weekend!
Kick off Friday night at the Regal at 6.45pm with live Hawaiian jazz by The High Andies.
And enjoy a light Southern Supper including buttermilk fried chicken, coleslaw, corn bread and pecan pie accompanied by Sweet Tea Mint Julep.
Then settle in for the concert....
Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa) captures Aretha Franklin singing her seminal live gospel album, filmed over two days in January, 1972. Screening for the first time four decades later, this film was worth the wait.
Rolling Stone described the concert as "the closest thing to witnessing a miracle — just some cameras, a crowd and a voice touched by God. The result is a concert film to rank with the best."

There was a time when we all had small children and lived in close proximity in Wollombi and Pokolbin. We formed creative collaborations which have impacted upon and sustained the patterns of our lives.
Using clay, photography, painting and sculpture we recall meaningful natural elements and experiences that have shaped our sensibilities.
‘Patterns in Time’ is on at Back to Back Galleries from the Friday 4th October until Sunday 20th October. Please join us for the opening at 5.30 pm on Friday 4th October with Kate Croll.

“Life imitates art far more than art imitates life” – Oscar Wilde
A subconscious aim of ours in this life is to find a form of expression. Con-voke seeks to portray how our daily activities can reflect the art that we express, the narrative that we choose to share. By exploring sound, stripped down to its very core and its relationship with the space that it occupies, something intricate and ornate slowly develops, reflecting on the beauty in allowing art to inform our lives. This is physically manifested through the acoustic deconstruction of the saxophone, using body movements and sounds to draw audiences along for a journey of transformation from raw nothingness to something full.

Dan Hopkins and the Generous few
Australian Blues|Roots|Gospel artist Dan Hopkins plays a punchy brand of modern roots that has a distinct delta flavour with gospel overtones. Dan creates an experience that could be described as Ash Grunwald, Eric Bibb and Paul Kelly meeting down at the crossroads. This culminates in an emotionally driven journey down a sweetly plucked but often dirty slide guitar borne road across the Southern blues idiom.
Travelling with his versatile 4 piece the band are set to deliver their brand of foot stomping folk, roots and blues off the back of the latest single
‘Where my baby belongs.’

Katie Who
Raw and evocative. Katie’s voice seeks out that corner of your soul that is hiding and infuses it with light. Authentic lyrics pave the path to self-empowerment in a palatial soundscape. The truth echoing through Katie’s music is both potent and electrifying.
Winning "Battle of the Buskers" at the first Buskers by the Creek festival in 2014 kick started Katie’s career and enabled the release of her first EP. Her single "The Wolves" (2016) earned Katie recognition as a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. Later that year Katie took her solo show international, playing at a festival called "Indie Week" In Toronto, winning over hearts in Canada.
In 2018 Katie’s powerhouse performances were showcased in the Athletes Village at the Commonwealth Games and she was selected to play shows at Splendour in the Grass (Global Village). Months later The Katie Who band won the Gold Coast's "Passport to Airlie" competition. They were invited to perform numerous shows at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music and appear on Balcony TV.
This year has begun with shutter speed for Katie Who after being selected as runner up in the Bluesfest Busking Competition- the only solo artist in the top six finalists- rocked a set on the Delta Stage at Bluesfest 2019.

Lloyd Spiegel
Tickets: $28.60
Acoustic Blues master Lloyd Spiegel is proud to announce the release of his 10th album ‘Cut and Run’ and is headed out on a mammoth Australian tour to get people acquainted with the new tracks, and is not a s how to miss for those who love incredible guitar playing, great songs and the odd tall tale.
As Lloyd celebrates his 30th year on tour in 2019, he can’t recall a time before playing guitar. Picking up the instrument at age four, Lloyd played his first professional show at age ten and was touring the east coast of Australia at 12.
By 16 he was on tour in the United States, cutting his teeth as a true travelling blues man.
Lloyd’s travels not only honed his craft, earned him a swag of awards and brought him to take counsel with the founding fathers of modern blues - it taught him the most important part of being a blues musician: connecting with everyday people.
Lloyd has toured extensively throughout Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan, viewing himself as a social worker more than anything else - someone to help people forget about their worries for a few hours and put a smile on their face.
‘Cut and Run’ is the final part of an unexpected trilogy about personal redemption Lloyd didn’t even realise he was writing until it was finished. Where previous albums ‘Backroads’ and ‘This Time Tomorrow’ had Lloyd asking questions and begging forgiveness for the sins of his past, on ‘Cut and Run’ he has found the tenacity to face the next chapter of his life.
First taste of the album is lead single ‘Track Her Down’, a deep and soulful blues number about the fleeting, yet precious, nature of connections he makes with people on the road and the fragility of personal relationships for a travelling musician.

MENTAL AS ANYTHING
A popular urban myth concerns a group of art students who passed themselves off as a band in order to con the local publican into giving them a gig in exchange for free beer. The deception worked better than intended, and the group came to be known as Mental as Anything. Nearly two decades later, they are still irritating the public with their highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop. A self-explanatory single to reflect their success, The Nips Are Getting Bigger, rose through the charts as did their fundamental understanding of the old adage that "for every action there is a reaction". Ahead lay a very lengthy pub crawl which only the accomplished could survive.

Tapestry of Fire and Rain - Lunch
A Tapestry of Fire and Rain is a genuinely moving, nostalgic concert performance - the music and legacy of Carole King and James Taylor. Two long-time friends and collaborators, prominent Jazz singer Di Bird and singer from legendary band The Kites Peter O’Regan capture the essence of friendship through music with their dynamic performances. They are joined in this venture by the master of guitar Steve Brien as Musical Director Both artists have frequently been stylistically compared to Carole King and James Taylor. Now, with the same amazing onstage chemistry as those superstars, they take their audiences back in time with favorites like “How Sweet It Is” “Carolina in My Mind” “I Feel the Earth Move” and of course, the incomparable, “You’ve Got a Friend”. For lovers of Carole King and James Taylor this show is a must!

As the younger brother of talented Blues Guitarist, Gypsy Dave Smith, Alex grew up listening to the music of artists like Muddy Waters & Brownie McGhee filtering through his bedroom wall. That deep connection with the rhythms & power of the blues, morphed on to form the backbone of his musical tastes and performance style

West Coast Swing (WCS) is an ultra-smooth social swing dance, originating in California, USA. It is characterised by it’s sense of fun, rhythmic footwork, freedom to improvise for both leaders and followers, and it’s beautiful smooth elastic look and feel. It captures a great range of music, including, RnB, Blues, Soul, Soft Rock, and Pop.
West Coast development is being driven by regular visits from numerous visiting professional US champions inspiring growing pockets of dancers nationwide.
It is for many, a natural progression from Modern Jive, for those who want to progress their general dance technique and musicality.
Now is the best time to get involved in the growth of this beautiful dance style.

This year will see Russell "The Real Thing “Morris an Australian legend, International Blues legend Steve "West" Weston & without a doubt the best female acoustic guitarist in the land Minnie Marks,
50 years ago, Russell Morris became the first Australian artist to score consecutive number one singles with his first two releases. ‘The Real Thing’, which is one of the classic psychedelic singles of the 1960s, and ‘Part Three Into Paper Walls’ both reached the top spot on the ARIA Chart, and what followed was one of the most remarkable stories in contemporary Australian music.
In 2019, Russell Morris returns with his new album, Black And Blue Heart
Steve "West" Weston has a pretty solid claim to being London’s top harmonica man. His tone is extraordinary, as is his taste and style, and within his chosen field – old style Chicago/West Coast harp playing- he’s right up there with anyone in the world today.
Introduced to the piano at age 7 with a few boogie woogie classics, Weston quickly found a calling in music. Playing his preferred laid-back Chicago style American blues to the louder British blues. Steve Weston captures any audience with unique charisma be it as a performer within the band or it’s leader onstage. The last couple of years have seen West Weston touring extensively with Mud Morganfield [Son of Muddy Waters] and also top the album charts with Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltrey.
Today, Weston ranks among the very best harp players in the European blues world. His work on the harp is at once deep in the tradition of harmonica masters Sonny Boy Williamson 2 and Little Walter while at the same time pushing that tradition forward,
Joining him as his touring band is none other than "Tomcat Playground", delivering a high energy, swinging style of traditional blues reminiscent of an era of Saturday night Juke joints, back alley gambling haunts and jazz bars,
A four piece act, consisting guitarist PJ O’Brien, Bass player Mike Rix, Drummer Greg Clark and Harmonica player Dan Sullivan, expect some harp collaboration when this hits top gear !!

Minnie Marks is not just some blazingly electrified acoustic guitar playing freak of nature, but also a rare and triple threat: Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Be warned, her show will take you on a dizzying, riff rock rollercoaster ride with songs written over the past years of her musical journey around the world.Touring a new album release recorded live in Germany, named ‘LIVE IN STUTTGART’ this bombshell explodes on stage pushing the limits of her guitar, vocals and performance, kicking arse and playing to packed out shows, leaving little doubt everybody is touting her as ‘the next big thing’.
With an insane talent that’s out of control playing what she calls dirty sweet rock & roll this young singer/songwriter/guitarist/ multi instrumentalist has been eating up girl bands since 1994.
Be it a festival audience or a bar room packed like a can of Sardines, she DOES NOT disappoint.

Wolfmother confirmed to headline a HUGE 2019 Scene & Heard Festival
After a massive 2018, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Scene & Heard couldn’t get any bigger, right?
Well, you’d be wrong because the lineup for the 2019 festival, which kicks off at Wickham Park on Sunday 10 November, has dropped overnight and it’s a doozy!
Leading the charge this year are Aussie heavy rockers Wolfmother who are fresh from a massive Splendour In The Grass gig and an international tour.
Amazing hitmaker Alex Lloyd will also be marking a milestone at this year’s festival – the 20th anniversary of his platinum-selling debut album Black The Sun – a record Alex will perform in full on the Scene & Heard stage.
The treats just keep coming, too with the 2019 bill rounded out by rockers Eskimo Joe and Even, crowd favourites Sneaky Sound System and the glorious indie power pop of Jebediah and Magic Dirt.
Wow!
To put the icing on the cake, Newcastle will also host the “Don’t Come Monday Stage” – a party zone designed to evoke only the best memories of the boiler room.
Championed this year by The Potbelleez DJ’s, the stage will feature Andy Murphy and John Course.
Scene & Heard is more than a festival. It’s about creating a connection to a time. A time before people cared about ‘likes’, and festival moments weren’t Instagram opportunities but collective memories.
Those wanting to create new memories and relive the old ones can head here to register for the pre-sale.
Members pre-sale begins Tuesday 11 June from 9am.
General public tickets are on sale Wednesday 12 June from 9am

He has won 20 Grammy Awards since 1982, over four decades.
Pat Metheny (born August 12, 1954) is a Grammy Award winning American jazz guitarist and composer from Missouri in the U.S.
Growing up in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, U.S. Metheny won a Down Beat scholarship and attended a one-week jazz camp at 15, under the creative wing of guitarist Attila Zoller, who subsequently invited young Metheny to New York City, U.S. to meet Jim Hall and Ron Carter. After a brief stint studying at the University of Miami, he was soon offered a teaching position there, before moving to Boston, U.S. to the Berklee College of Music where he made a name for himself as the wildly talented teenager with a teaching assitantship along with jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton.
Playing and contributing to a number of groups including Gary Burton’s band, Metheny soon began releasing his own material including his debut album “Bright Size Life” and the follow-up 1977’s “Watercolours” featuring pianist and long-term collaborator Lyle Mays.
Before long Metheny became ECM’s top artist and one of the most popular jazzmen of all time, making a name for himself for his highly creative, unpredictable style, with his freelance side projects often producing the most dynamic and unexpected results. The list of artists Metheny has worked with is impressively long and includes the likes of Ornettle Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Dave Holland and David Bowie.
In 1977 he founded the Pat Metheny Group, and their first release in 1978, featured the infamous writing duo of Metheny and Mays, which would go on to span 25 years and 15 albums. The group's sophomore album “American Garage” (1980) hit the mainstream with an upbeat opening track “(Cross the) Heartland” which became synonymous with the band’s success. The Pat Metheny Group went on to explore their sound, experimenting with various styles of music; inspired by new members Nana Vasconcelos and Aznar the band introduced latin-induced music to the group for the album “Offramp”.
The band left ECM records following a dispute and released their subsequent albums “Still Life” (1987), “Letter From Home” (1989), “We Live Here” (1995), “Quartet” (1996) and “Imaginary Day” (1997) on Geffen Records, the latter three represented a move away from the Latin style that had influenced many of their earlier albums.
Metheny continues to tour with an impressive line-up of musicians, has received many Grammy Awards, the first five of which were consecutive in the category of Best Jazz Fusion Performance, and remains one of the greatest progressive jazz musicians in the world.
