6 Workshop Way, Newcastle, NSW 2300
Sensing, seeing and acting. That's the promise of big data, but are we experiencing it at the grassroots? Bruce Taper reckons yes, kinda!
We hope you can make it!
Cheers,
The Lunaticks Society Inc
A passionate and focused advocate for equity and transformation of our urban and wider environments through the strategic and intelligent use of multiply and disparate sources of data, the former Newcastle electrical apprentice has committed his professional life to giving governments, businesses and emerging industries the tools to create sustainable and liveable urban communities that we all aspire too see now and into the future.
Founder and director of Kinesis - a Sydney-based data-led technology firm that lands sustainability software through the Cloud to its clients' desktops, Bruce Taper is our next Keynote speaker in the Data is the New Oil Talk Series.
Bruce’s track record of original thought and innovation over the past two decades has created a substantial legacy within the sustainability sector in Australia. His expertise lies in developing mechanisms to manage sustainability issues for both public and private sector entities and providing specialist advice firmly grounded in his experience of policy development and implementation.
Recognised nationally for his work on climate related issues, Bruce is renowned for the magnitude of analysis he applies to all projects and his capacity to utilise emerging technologies to deliver smart, equitable and enabling solutions.
Speaking to this talk's theme - Digital Footprints on My Footpath - Bruce will examine how the smart application of data can and does have a transformational effect on our urban environments and will play a fundamental role in the evolution of sustainable and healthy cities and communities in the future. But there are obstacles, which he will explore.
In our first talk in May this year, behavioural economist and founder of CoreData Research Australia, keynote speaker Andrew Inwood, mapped out how our everyday activities have been reduced to highly valuable data points as we go about our daily routines in his presentation titled All the World is Awash with Data.
Picking up on some of the key points from Andrew's Keynote address, Bruce will drill down to how the strategic use of data can change the design of our urban landscape, right down to the way we use our roads and footpaths.
The keynote address will be followed by a moderated panel discussion with Professor SueAnne Ware , Head of School at the University of Newcastle's School of Architecture and Built Environment and City of Newcastle's Karenne Jurd, Environment Program Coordinator. Time permitting there will be a chance for audience members to ask questions.
Wrangling the event on the night will be The Lunaticks's president and co-host of Lunaticks Live from the Foghorn Brewhouse, Greg Hall.
The Data is the New Oil Talk Series looks at how essential data is to a smart city and the corresponding impact of a big data world on its citizens. Following a number of high profile privacy breaches around the globe (Facebook and Cambridge Analytica), this topic is of increasing interest for many of us in our communities.
This co-curated talk series aims to generate meaningful debate around privacy and data governance, encouraging discussion tolerant of complexity and accepting of contradiction. It seeks to provide practical examples and solutions to abstract concepts to help members of the community make informed decisions about their data and how it's used.
The talk series is a collaboration between the The Lunaticks Society - home of the NEWi Awards - and City of Newcastle's Smart City Program.

There is Another World but it is this One - John Heaney
Saturday at 3 PM – 6 PM
'There is Another World but it is This One' is the third exhibition & the first solo exhibition of John Heaney’s ceramic work at ASW. John Heaney is currently completing a Master of Fine Art at The University of Newcastle.
Heaney works with clay because for him ‘it is such an expressive medium. Ideas, emotions, and memories are suggested through surfaces that open up like windows in an apartment building, or through textural surfaces that might be paper or cotton. While other forms are cut and slashed to reveal the frozen motion of the energy of rock formation’.
Everything we imagine is always permeated with our own experience of everyday life and the dreams we once had. It accumulates, adds up over time and spills out unbidden into the work I do, often taking me by surprise. John Heaney, September 2019.
There is Another World but it is This One official Opening is on Saturday September 21 from 3pm. The exhibition continues until October 6.

TUESDAY 24 SEPTEMBER FROM 6:30
STEEL LIFE | 24 SEPTEMBER - 19 OCTOBER
The photograph as a witness to time, people and events, has been the preferred medium for documenting and preserving our histories since its invention in 1839.
The pictorialist photographer Harold Cazneaux (1878 – 1953) was commissioned by BHP to photograph their steelwork plants throughout Australia in 1934. His photograph Steam and Sunshine, Newcastle BHP, 1934, blends his characteristic use of light with billowing steam incorporating a modernist sense of space, form and geometry. It remains still an iconic image of Australia's industrial past.
A generation on in 1963, another renowned photographer, David Moore (1927 – 2003) created his iconic image with Newcastle Steelworks, with a foreground composition of two young boys riding away from the steelworks that were atmospherically billowing smoke across the horizon, providing a human scale to the immense industrial production.
In 1999, Murray McKean’s photographs showed the site post closure in a state of ruin. Detritus from the steelworks is sprawled across the landscape in a kind of wreckage that documents the monumental scale and emotion of that time in Newcastle's history. The residual materials, and the evidence of absent workers, and workers as they clear the site, will remain tangible for many. Using the texture of the abandoned architecture of the site, Murray has preserved this period of our city's history with a series of poignant images that offer critical commentary on our collective memory twenty years on.
Broken Hill Propriety (BHP) began mining silver, lead and zinc at Broken Hill in NSW in 1885. In 1915 the company ventured into steel and commissioned a steel making works to be opened on ten hectares of land by the Hunter River at Mayfield. During its operations it was one of the largest employers in Newcastle and defined the city as an industrial centre.
By the 1990s, the steelworks, affectionately known as 'big Harry's place', was to be phased out by the end of that decade, bringing to a close the operations of Australia’s oldest steel making operations that had employed over 50,000 people.
Newcastle’s steelworks closed on September 30th, 1999.

Witness the age of aquarius come to life in this liberating rock musical.
Defy your expectations with this contemporary take on the classic hair raising musical. Follow the rule breakers, yearning for change in the world of the late 60’s. Fighting for freedom, human rights, the environment and peace in times of war, HAIR puts a mirror to today’s society and asks the question, how far have we really come?
Starring four time Logie winner Hugh Sheridan (Packed to the Rafters) and powerhouse vocalist Paulini (The Bodyguard), this brand new Australian production features all the hits from the GRAMMY® Award winning score including ‘Aquarius’, ‘Let the Sunshine In’, ‘Good Morning, Starshine’ and ‘I Got Life’. Produced by David M. Hawkins (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), this infectious rock musical is brought vividly to life this spring.

He has won 20 Grammy Awards since 1982, over four decades.
Pat Metheny (born August 12, 1954) is a Grammy Award winning American jazz guitarist and composer from Missouri in the U.S.
Growing up in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, U.S. Metheny won a Down Beat scholarship and attended a one-week jazz camp at 15, under the creative wing of guitarist Attila Zoller, who subsequently invited young Metheny to New York City, U.S. to meet Jim Hall and Ron Carter. After a brief stint studying at the University of Miami, he was soon offered a teaching position there, before moving to Boston, U.S. to the Berklee College of Music where he made a name for himself as the wildly talented teenager with a teaching assitantship along with jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton.
Playing and contributing to a number of groups including Gary Burton’s band, Metheny soon began releasing his own material including his debut album “Bright Size Life” and the follow-up 1977’s “Watercolours” featuring pianist and long-term collaborator Lyle Mays.
Before long Metheny became ECM’s top artist and one of the most popular jazzmen of all time, making a name for himself for his highly creative, unpredictable style, with his freelance side projects often producing the most dynamic and unexpected results. The list of artists Metheny has worked with is impressively long and includes the likes of Ornettle Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Dave Holland and David Bowie.
In 1977 he founded the Pat Metheny Group, and their first release in 1978, featured the infamous writing duo of Metheny and Mays, which would go on to span 25 years and 15 albums. The group's sophomore album “American Garage” (1980) hit the mainstream with an upbeat opening track “(Cross the) Heartland” which became synonymous with the band’s success. The Pat Metheny Group went on to explore their sound, experimenting with various styles of music; inspired by new members Nana Vasconcelos and Aznar the band introduced latin-induced music to the group for the album “Offramp”.
The band left ECM records following a dispute and released their subsequent albums “Still Life” (1987), “Letter From Home” (1989), “We Live Here” (1995), “Quartet” (1996) and “Imaginary Day” (1997) on Geffen Records, the latter three represented a move away from the Latin style that had influenced many of their earlier albums.
Metheny continues to tour with an impressive line-up of musicians, has received many Grammy Awards, the first five of which were consecutive in the category of Best Jazz Fusion Performance, and remains one of the greatest progressive jazz musicians in the world.

Corey Legge " Free Entry "
Corey Legge plays heartfelt folk-rock and alt-country, drawing influence from growing up in the small country town of Bega on the beautiful Far South Coast of NSW Australia. Now based in Wollongong, Corey’s original music is reminiscent of James Taylor and Bernard Fanning, with mesmerising guitar work and smooth vocal melodies that will get stuck in your head for days. Corey's debut album was recorded in NZ with award-winning producer Ben Edwards (Marlon Williams, Julia Jacklin), and was released in March 2019. To date the lead single 'Driving out of Eden' has been played on both Triple J and Double J, and the video link has been shared by the legendary US singer-songwriter James Taylor.

Nathan Cavaleri
Tickets: GA $23.50
Nathan Cavaleri
Much of the country was oblivious to the career Nathan Cavaleri led beyond prime-time Australia. By age 12, he found himself the centre of a bidding war between the labels of Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. By age 16 he'd toured with B.B. King as his guest, and played at the Kennedy Centre in front of The Clintons with Etta James and Bonnie Raitt.
In 2010, Nathan's battle with insomnia and anxiety was witnesses by thousands when he blacked out on a festival stage. Struggling to regain his confidence and drive he stepped away from his art with the expectation of never returning. Whilst the performing came to a halt, his song writing developed a far deeper level of expression with a diverse range of influences. This love of music offered him a similar type of therapy it had when he battled leukaemia as a child. Motivated by his passion to play and write, he stared down the fear of live performance and determined that it was time to make a record.
His upcoming EP 'Demons' stretches beyond the traditional rock, blues and roots that Cavaleri is known for. The release of the first single 'Demons' marked his 6 year rise above mental health challenges and return to the stage. 'Rising Sun' is a track in which he pays tribute to the man that landed him his first record deal and tour at age 10, Jimmy Barnes, and is an emotive step from the profoundly beautiful title track.
This will be Nathan’s first solo release since he was signed to Michael Jackson’s label in 1994 and features songs that are a culmination of the diverse life Nathan has lived. B.B.King calling Nathan “the future of blues” is definitely an appropriate quote for how he has expanded beyond his roots.
“This time around, I wanted to express more than blues would allow. Each track throughout the writing and production process conformed to no specific genre and called upon an array of my favourite artists from J.J.Cale and B.B. King to Bowie, Lana Del Ray, and Mos Def.”
Cavaleri returns after playing sell out gigs up and down the East Coast in 2018, seeing him connect intimately with new and lifetime fans through both story and song. From how his love for music deepened during his battle with leukaemia as a kid, to a hilarious encounter with Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant after playing to sixty thousand people in Zurich after Elton John. However, it's how he brings his experiences and songs into the present that gives audiences more than a shot of nostalgia.

Ben Whiting
Ben Whiting is genuinely stumped about what he would be doing, if not music. He is what happens when a 90’s kid puts The Police and Bob Marley on high rotation, sits in a beanbag in an old aircraft hanger to watch his extended family play regular jam nights, and is then mentored in playing and touring from age 13.
Those early influences have guided and continue to teach him, and the result is a gifted singer-songwriter comfortable with using a broad palette of inspiration to create a sound that is wholly his own.
Early in his career, Ben’s previous band played festivals including Splendour In The Grass and supported artists such as Katy Perry, Grinspoon and The Angels.
He followed this period with a pivot to a folk aesthetic, and has now integrated his rock experience back into his songwriting and performances. The continual thread running throughout Whiting’s various artistic expressions is his ‘virtually flawless’voice (Faster Louder); it cannot help but remain the standout feature.
Whiting’s self-titled debut EP was released in 2014, followed by his second EP, Private Island, in mid 2017. Accompanied on bass by his cousin Billy Donaldson since they were teens, the pair teamed with Alex Burkoy (Tinpan Orange) on strings and Colombian drummer Victor Salamanca to produce Private Island.
Ben Whiting and band will head back into the studio to produce their first studio album in 2019.

Dan Hopkins and the Generous few
Australian Blues|Roots|Gospel artist Dan Hopkins plays a punchy brand of modern roots that has a distinct delta flavour with gospel overtones. Dan creates an experience that could be described as Ash Grunwald, Eric Bibb and Paul Kelly meeting down at the crossroads. This culminates in an emotionally driven journey down a sweetly plucked but often dirty slide guitar borne road across the Southern blues idiom.
Travelling with his versatile 4 piece the band are set to deliver their brand of foot stomping folk, roots and blues off the back of the latest single

Katie Who
Raw and evocative. Katie’s voice seeks out that corner of your soul that is hiding and infuses it with light. Authentic lyrics pave the path to self-empowerment in a palatial soundscape. The truth echoing through Katie’s music is both potent and electrifying.
Winning "Battle of the Buskers" at the first Buskers by the Creek festival in 2014 kick started Katie’s career and enabled the release of her first EP. Her single "The Wolves" (2016) earned Katie recognition as a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. Later that year Katie took her solo show international, playing at a festival called "Indie Week" In Toronto, winning over hearts in Canada.
In 2018 Katie’s powerhouse performances were showcased in the Athletes Village at the Commonwealth Games and she was selected to play shows at Splendour in the Grass (Global Village). Months later The Katie Who band won the Gold Coast's "Passport to Airlie" competition. They were invited to perform numerous shows at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music and appear on Balcony TV.
This year has begun with shutter speed for Katie Who after being selected as runner up in the Bluesfest Busking Competition- the only solo artist in the top six finalists- rocked a set on the Delta Stage at Bluesfest 2019.

Lloyd Spiegel
Tickets: $28.60
Acoustic Blues master Lloyd Spiegel is proud to announce the release of his 10th album ‘Cut and Run’ and is headed out on a mammoth Australian tour to get people acquainted with the new tracks, and is not a s how to miss for those who love incredible guitar playing, great songs and the odd tall tale.
As Lloyd celebrates his 30th year on tour in 2019, he can’t recall a time before playing guitar. Picking up the instrument at age four, Lloyd played his first professional show at age ten and was touring the east coast of Australia at 12.
By 16 he was on tour in the United States, cutting his teeth as a true travelling blues man.
Lloyd’s travels not only honed his craft, earned him a swag of awards and brought him to take counsel with the founding fathers of modern blues - it taught him the most important part of being a blues musician: connecting with everyday people.
Lloyd has toured extensively throughout Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan, viewing himself as a social worker more than anything else - someone to help people forget about their worries for a few hours and put a smile on their face.
‘Cut and Run’ is the final part of an unexpected trilogy about personal redemption Lloyd didn’t even realise he was writing until it was finished. Where previous albums ‘Backroads’ and ‘This Time Tomorrow’ had Lloyd asking questions and begging forgiveness for the sins of his past, on ‘Cut and Run’ he has found the tenacity to face the next chapter of his life.
First taste of the album is lead single ‘Track Her Down’, a deep and soulful blues number about the fleeting, yet precious, nature of connections he makes with people on the road and the fragility of personal relationships for a travelling musician.

MENTAL AS ANYTHING
A popular urban myth concerns a group of art students who passed themselves off as a band in order to con the local publican into giving them a gig in exchange for free beer. The deception worked better than intended, and the group came to be known as Mental as Anything. Nearly two decades later, they are still irritating the public with their highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop. A self-explanatory single to reflect their success, The Nips Are Getting Bigger, rose through the charts as did their fundamental understanding of the old adage that "for every action there is a reaction". Ahead lay a very lengthy pub crawl which only the accomplished could survive.

Alex Smith (Moving Pictures)
Lead singer of "Moving Pictures", Alex Smith will tour East Coast live-music venues in October 2019, performing his new album "The Thread" & celebrating the songs & artists that shaped his youth. It's a long time since the intensity of the early 1980’s, but the passion for singing & performance has never left him. As the younger brother of talented Blues Guitarist, Gypsy Dave Smith, Alex grew up listening to the music of artists like Muddy Waters & Brownie McGhee filtering through his bedroom wall. That deep connection with the rhythms & power of the blues, morphed on to form the backbone of his musical tastes and performance style

JETS PLAY JETS BIO:
It all started JETS PLAY JETS is a band formed by Grant Walmsley and Richie Lara reunited for the first time in 26 years to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of them founding the Screaming Jets.
To celebrate this milestone, the pair have formed JETS PLAY JETS, with two of Newcastle’s most respected musicians, frontman Justin Ngariki and bassist Paul Coxon round out the lineup. No strangers to the stage Ngariki and Coxon have shared the stage with the likes of silverchair, The Cult, Whitesnake, Rose Tattoo and former AC/DC vocalist Dave Evans.
JETS PLAY JETS play all the hits from the Jets’ first two internationally acclaimed albums, debut All For One, the sophomore classic Tear of Thought, as well as the iconic EP Living In England. Aussie Rock Anthems such as the ARIA chart smash hits Better, along with C’mon, Shivers, Helping Hand, Living in England, FRC, Blue Sashes, Tunnel, Starting Out and Stop the World all deliver the classic and unmistakable twin guitar assault of Walmsley and Lara.
These guys led an international charge off the back of their debut smash album, taking on the United States and Europe, touring endlessly and sharing stages with the likes of KISS, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Ugly Kid Joe, Faith No More, and many more.
Fans have said that “this combination alone is synonymous with the original Jets sound”.
“This is the way those songs are supposed to be played!”
“This is the way those songs are supposed to be played!”
Grant Walmsley declares “It may have been 26 years since we played together but the instant we started, it was a lightning strike right back to our glory days. We haven’t lost a thing”.

Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen
Thursday, 10 October 2019
Jon Cleary is one of music’s great anomalies. A Kent raised Englishman turned certified New Orleans music legend after gracefully inhabiting the Crescent City and everything it has to offer over the course of 30 plus years. A Grammy award winning, global touring and studio force, who has graced stages, shared rooms and gained respect from everyone from Allen Toussaint to Tom Jones, Dr. John to Bonnie Raitt, Fats Domino to Eric Clapton, Taj Mahal to BB King, even Brian May to D’Angelo. Jon Cleary quite simply embodies the sound of New Orleans, and throughout the second half of 2019, he takes that experience to stages across the globe on his massive Dyna-Mite World Tour, bolstered by the presence of his long time band, The Absolute Monster Gentlemen.
After another incredible turn at the famed New Orleans Jazz Fest in April, fans in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia will now have the chance to witness Jon and his crew take to some of the most famed venue and festival stages on the planet across this remarkable 60 date journey, featuring an eight show run at London’s famed Ronnie Scott’s, a string of European dates with longtime friend and jazz legend John Scofield and an expedition to Havana to explore the roots of Cuban music, art and culture.
Tickets for Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen’s Dyna-Mite World Tour are on sale now at www.joncleary.com
“Cleary can be an absolute monster on his own, but Cleary’s full combo R&B is as broad, deep and roiling as the Mississippi River, the combined swinging product of local keyboard tradition, Cleary’s vocal-songwriting flair for moody Seventies soul and the spunky-Meters roll of his Gentlemen” David Fricke, Rolling Stone

This year will see Russell "The Real Thing “Morris an Australian legend, International Blues legend Steve "West" Weston & without a doubt the best female acoustic guitarist in the land Minnie Marks,
50 years ago, Russell Morris became the first Australian artist to score consecutive number one singles with his first two releases. ‘The Real Thing’, which is one of the classic psychedelic singles of the 1960s, and ‘Part Three Into Paper Walls’ both reached the top spot on the ARIA Chart, and what followed was one of the most remarkable stories in contemporary Australian music.
In 2019, Russell Morris returns with his new album, Black And Blue Heart
Steve "West" Weston has a pretty solid claim to being London’s top harmonica man. His tone is extraordinary, as is his taste and style, and within his chosen field – old style Chicago/West Coast harp playing- he’s right up there with anyone in the world today.
Introduced to the piano at age 7 with a few boogie woogie classics, Weston quickly found a calling in music. Playing his preferred laid-back Chicago style American blues to the louder British blues. Steve Weston captures any audience with unique charisma be it as a performer within the band or it’s leader onstage. The last couple of years have seen West Weston touring extensively with Mud Morganfield [Son of Muddy Waters] and also top the album charts with Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltrey.
Today, Weston ranks among the very best harp players in the European blues world. His work on the harp is at once deep in the tradition of harmonica masters Sonny Boy Williamson 2 and Little Walter while at the same time pushing that tradition forward,
Joining him as his touring band is none other than "Tomcat Playground", delivering a high energy, swinging style of traditional blues reminiscent of an era of Saturday night Juke joints, back alley gambling haunts and jazz bars,
A four piece act, consisting guitarist PJ O’Brien, Bass player Mike Rix, Drummer Greg Clark and Harmonica player Dan Sullivan, expect some harp collaboration when this hits top gear !!
A four piece act, consisting guitarist PJ O’Brien, Bass player Mike Rix, Drummer Greg Clark and Harmonica player Dan Sullivan, expect some harp collaboration when this hits top gear !!
Minnie Marks is not just some blazingly electrified acoustic guitar playing freak of nature, but also a rare and triple threat: Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Be warned, her show will take you on a dizzying, riff rock rollercoaster ride with songs written over the past years of her musical journey around the world.Touring a new album release recorded live in Germany, named ‘LIVE IN STUTTGART’ this bombshell explodes on stage pushing the limits of her guitar, vocals and performance, kicking arse and playing to packed out shows, leaving little doubt everybody is touting her as ‘the next big thing’.
With an insane talent that’s out of control playing what she calls dirty sweet rock & roll this young singer/songwriter/guitarist/ multi instrumentalist has been eating up girl bands since 1994.
Be it a festival audience or a bar room packed like a can of Sardines, she DOES NOT disappoint.

Wolfmother confirmed to headline a HUGE 2019 Scene & Heard Festival
After a massive 2018, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Scene & Heard couldn’t get any bigger, right?
Well, you’d be wrong because the lineup for the 2019 festival, which kicks off at Wickham Park on Sunday 10 November, has dropped overnight and it’s a doozy!
Leading the charge this year are Aussie heavy rockers Wolfmother who are fresh from a massive Splendour In The Grass gig and an international tour.
Amazing hitmaker Alex Lloyd will also be marking a milestone at this year’s festival – the 20th anniversary of his platinum-selling debut album Black The Sun – a record Alex will perform in full on the Scene & Heard stage.
The treats just keep coming, too with the 2019 bill rounded out by rockers Eskimo Joe and Even, crowd favourites Sneaky Sound System and the glorious indie power pop of Jebediah and Magic Dirt.
Wow!
To put the icing on the cake, Newcastle will also host the “Don’t Come Monday Stage” – a party zone designed to evoke only the best memories of the boiler room.
Championed this year by The Potbelleez DJ’s, the stage will feature Andy Murphy and John Course.
Scene & Heard is more than a festival. It’s about creating a connection to a time. A time before people cared about ‘likes’, and festival moments weren’t Instagram opportunities but collective memories.
Those wanting to create new memories and relive the old ones can head here to register for the pre-sale.
Members pre-sale begins Tuesday 11 June from 9am.
General public tickets are on sale Wednesday 12 June from 9am
