“Keep strong, if possible. In any case, keep cool. Have unlimited patience. Never corner an opponent and always assist him to save his face. Put yourself in his shoes – so as to see things through his eyes. Avoid self-righteousness like the devil – nothing is so self-binding”.
The quote is from book in 1960 “Deterrent or Defense” by british military analyst, reviewed by JFK.

The 18th Annual Patonga Blues Across The Bay
Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 9 AM – 6 PM
Tickets · $45 - $75
18 years and showing no sign of letting up !!! Australia's only – Ferry Only Access – Blues Festival, is still raging along
For those not already in the know – Patonga Blues starts with it’s renowned ferry ride to the shores of Broken Bay Sport And Recreation Centre. Once there, you can drop off your BYO picnic and chairs to the helpful Centre Staff, who will take your gear, while you enjoy a lovely 3 minute flat leisurely walk around to the festival site. If you need some assistance staff are more than willing to help and even offer a lift if necessary.
After a Welcome to Country, 3 bands will entertain you, while you eat and drink your own food, and perhaps even indulge in a bit of dancing, for an awesome and relaxed afternoon.
This year will see Russell "The Real Thing “Morris an Australian legend, International Blues legend Steve "West" Weston & without a doubt the best female acoustic guitarist in the land Minnie Marks,
50 years ago, Russell Morris became the first Australian artist to score consecutive number one singles with his first two releases. ‘The Real Thing’, which is one of the classic psychedelic singles of the 1960s, and ‘Part Three Into Paper Walls’ both reached the top spot on the ARIA Chart, and what followed was one of the most remarkable stories in contemporary Australian music.
In 2019, Russell Morris returns with his new album, Black And Blue Heart
Steve "West" Weston has a pretty solid claim to being London’s top harmonica man. His tone is extraordinary, as is his taste and style, and within his chosen field – old style Chicago/West Coast harp playing- he’s right up there with anyone in the world today.
Introduced to the piano at age 7 with a few boogie woogie classics, Weston quickly found a calling in music. Playing his preferred laid-back Chicago style American blues to the louder British blues. Steve Weston captures any audience with unique charisma be it as a performer within the band or it’s leader onstage. The last couple of years have seen West Weston touring extensively with Mud Morganfield [Son of Muddy Waters] and also top the album charts with Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltrey.
Today, Weston ranks among the very best harp players in the European blues world. His work on the harp is at once deep in the tradition of harmonica masters Sonny Boy Williamson 2 and Little Walter while at the same time pushing that tradition forward,
Joining him as his touring band is none other than "Tomcat Playground", delivering a high energy, swinging style of traditional blues reminiscent of an era of Saturday night Juke joints, back alley gambling haunts and jazz bars,
A four piece act, consisting guitarist PJ O’Brien, Bass player Mike Rix, Drummer Greg Clark and Harmonica player Dan Sullivan, expect some harp collaboration when this hits top gear !!
Minnie Marks is not just some blazingly electrified acoustic guitar playing freak of nature, but also a rare and triple threat: Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Be warned, her show will take you on a dizzying, riff rock rollercoaster ride with songs written over the past years of her musical journey around the world.Touring a new album release recorded live in Germany, named ‘LIVE IN STUTTGART’ this bombshell explodes on stage pushing the limits of her guitar, vocals and performance, kicking arse and playing to packed out shows, leaving little doubt everybody is touting her as ‘the next big thing’.
With an insane talent that’s out of control playing what she calls dirty sweet rock & roll this young singer/songwriter/guitarist/multi instrumentalist has been eating up girl bands since 1994.
Be it a festival audience or a bar room packed like a can of Sardines, she DOES NOT disappoint.
This is a not-for-profit community event, and runs entirely on volunteers who do not get paid. Your ticket price includes the ferry trip, the bands, and venue hire. Any money raised goes back into the community. In the past we have funded ….
Furnishings (seats and tables) in the Patonga Pavillion (erected by Gosford City Council); installed bench seatings around the village and donated generously to worthwhile people and causes; Money has also been committed to improvements on the Patonga Progress hall including roof shelter on the Hall’s large deck.
Remember, this is a small festival and tickets are strictly limited, **THIS WILL SELL OUT WELL IN ADVANCE, SO GET IN QUICK TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT**

Raven Dances by Susan Ryman - Opening Sat Aug 31 from 2pm

The next exhibition at ASW is by Susan Ryman and is titled 'Raven Dances'. The shows opens on Saturday August 30 with celebratory drinks and meet the artist. This will be Ryman’s third solo exhibition at ASW.

‘Standing on a jetty looking towards land on a brilliant sunny spring morning, I noticed two ravens swooping and flying in a breathtaking dance all along the shoreline. Suddenly one completely disappeared, revealing itself to be an elusive shadow.

The works in Raven Dances all respond to my immediate surroundings, inviting contemplation about the fragile nature of existence. Refuse becomes beautiful dancing ghosts, harbingers of our cultural disregard for so many precious things, including our fellow humans.

This PhD research is an investigation into the human-dog relationship, tracing the threads of understanding through philosophy and ancient ideas, to contemporary issues. The manipulation of both behaviours and the styles of dogs have been made by, and for, the benefit of humans over many centuries. The results of these societal ideas and values have also been reflected throughout the canon of art history, where artists have represented the status of these domesticated animals in the fashion of their time.
By the Good Grace explores the love, hate and indifference shown towards domesticated dogs historically. The broader aim of this research is to challenge people’s perceptions around the capacity of dogs to suffer when ill-treated, often as a result of dogs being purchased for fashion or illegal activities, rather than a deeper relationship.

Right now we have the perfect opportunity to build on the region’s natural competitive advantages, exploit its depth of research talent and leverage these ingredients to shape our region into one that can be renowned for its innovation and excellence.
This special edition of IQ Talk will feature a keynote presentation from Colin Kinner - big thinker and innovation change agent.
Date: Thursday 5 Sep
Time: 6:00pm-7:30pm
Location: Civic Theatre, 375 Hunter Street  Newcastle
Significant progress has been made in recent times across smart city, innovation ecosystems, and city infrastructure. There is a tangible sense of momentum, but still plenty of work remaining to be done. We’ve learned a lot in the last three years and maybe we can ask some different questions now. iQ Talk will grasp this moment to reflect on progress and challenge our thinking.
Headlining this edition is Colin Kinner, founder of Startup Onramp, a training and mentoring program for first-time startup founders with a focus on regional Australia. He has been deeply involved in the national startup ecosystem over the last ten years - including as CEO of several incubators and accelerators, an early stage investor, mentor and expert on building startup ecosystems. Colin is also an experienced startup educator who has trained and coached hundreds of emerging entrepreneurs. He is passionate about helping startup founders to be successful and has been engaged to advise on startup best practice by a number of agencies, including Australia’s Chief Scientist who commissioned Colin to author a landmark report on entrepreneurship education in Australia. He is also Consulting Editor for The Entrepreneur’s Guide, a comprehensive guidebook for startups published by Caxton and backed by the ASX.
Colin will be joined  for a panel discussion by an exciting group of thought leadersThis panel has in their sights some of the myths surrounding innovation ecosystems, the promise of smart cities, and Newcastle's seemingly inevitable future as a creative city.
Join us to get beyond the highlights reel as we tackle some hard questions.
5:30pm for 6pm sharp start.

James Van Cooper
James Van Cooper is an Australian. He’s young, stylish and cool. He summons the sounds of Alt/Country Rock with catchy hooks and twangy guitars. He’s a man for those that like their country gnarly and epic as well as nuanced and intimate. James’ is a slick flamboyant performer and a heartfelt songwriter, he’s renowned as a wild and complete guitarist who can leave an audience in smoking ruins.
James as a teenager cut his teeth musically playing hard and fast on the local rock and metal circuit in his hometown of Sydney, Australia. In his late teens, he struggled with the demon drink and by 20 years old JVC won his hard-earned sobriety. This road to enlightenment was , in part, harnessed to inspire James’ debut EP released in early 2017 , “Highrise Skyline” . The making of this EP was fostered under the tutelage of Australian Country Music icon Bill Chambers. James and Bill met through a chance  meeting and for most of 2017 together they recorded and toured Australia and Europe. By early 2018 James now 21 years of age, was stylistically gravitating more to towards Alt Country, especially Ryan Adams and Jason Isbell and he began to further blaze his own trail in the world of cool country rock.
In March/April 2018 James Van Cooper went to USA to record his debut album with famed LA Producer Scott Campbell. While in the US James summoned the support of some of LA’s finest musicians including Matt Pynn and Alt/Country darling Jamie Wyatt (Jamie performs a duet with James on the track “Come Home”.
James’ new record “Coming Home” released September 2018 represents an edgy alternative to Nashville Country/Pop. “Coming Home” is an authentic slab of “New Country Rock”, 10 tracks played in a captivating style, presenting James as a polished performer but not contrived.
James delivers a debut record that is devoid devious studio tricks and faux brilliance. This is a passionate body of work genuflecting at the alter of New Country Rock while also unapologetically experimenting sonically, displaying an affection for several country music sub genres including Bluegrass, Americana Balladeering and Traditional Country.
James is quoted.
“This Record is fuelled by a need to break free of certain constraints and confines whether they be imagined or real. I had to play with a fresh deck so to speak hence the American studio sessions. Being an Australian and packing up to head to Hollywood to record, while exciting was still an unknown. What fears I did have were totally unwarranted as I was introduced to a wonderful producer in Scott Campbell who understood and encouraged what I envisaged in the creative process. Scott and I collaborated with a band that got on with making a genuine country rock record, an album that stands up for the new ways while respecting and acknowledging the vintage sound of country music. I wanted to make a record with a music narrative that pulled the listener along and I think I’ve done that on “Coming Home”.”

Magpie Diaries
Tickets: GA $13.30
August is Magpie season…
After extensive touring to all ends of this wide brown land, Dashville natives Magpie Diaries will bring their eloquently soothing soul country back home to Newcastle, capping off an exceptional time for the band, with the release of their acclaimed debut album, Sanctuary.
The debut album, Sanctuary is a journey from the past, where one can still roam with wild exuberance. Where the desire to perform is matched with the desire to escape and unravel inside the music. Sanctuary is Magpie’s happy place.
The band title and songs within Sanctuary centre on the mind of singer-songwriter and Dashville founder Matt “Magpie” Johnston.
There’s a warm and communal feel right across the album, its woolly and homespun vibe come off like The Band but they colour the music with some beautiful saxophone playing that combines perfectly with cosmic Americana pedal steel sounds and plenty of country twang and strum in the guitars. (Post To Wire)
Alluding to an era of more simplistic notions Magpie Diaries take flight into an abundant musical sanctuary with their debut album. A sanctuary that delivers Magpie’s story via smooth soulful folk country with subtle flourishes of psychedelic 70s rock 'n' roll.
Sanctuary is a journey through the past and into the future where one can still roam with wild exuberance where the desire to perform is matched with the desire to escape and unravel inside the music.
.'.beyond being a beautiful recording it’s a real genuine slice of classic Australian music, which is rare as hens teeth. I hear a lot of stuff in there from Hunters to really obscure acts like The Apartments, and the much better side of alt country we do in this land, but it’s all digested and comes out very much your own - again very rare. Kudos.’(Glenn Richards, Augie March)

Kingsley James
After a lifetime of experimenting with music in his childhood bedroom, Maitland singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Kingsley James started to share his art with his local community in late 2017.
In that short time, he has become a regular in the music scene across the Hunter, as well as visiting other spots in NSW supporting acts including Tori Forsyth, Johnston City, Runaway Mornings and Novocastrian surf-rock band Dyer Maker
Kingsley’s dulcet sound marries tones of earthiness with elements of soul, folk and blues - powered by honest and vulnerable lyrics derived from the experiences of his everyday. Inspired by the early sounds of Marvin Gaye and Elvis , Kingsley’s true genre is soul itself, reaching for something more then just the sounds but a feeling of what it brings. His other main influences are Marlon Williams, Father John Misty and of course Fleet Foxes. His debut single, “You and I”, is no exception
Born from an experience of realisation of love, “You and I” tells the story of gaining love for another over many years of friendship.
Kingsley James will be setting off on his “You and I” tour visiting locations including Surry Hills, Canberra, Mullumbimby, Maroochydore and a hand full more on the coast throughout August.

Nathan Cavaleri
Tickets: GA  $23.50
Nathan Cavaleri
Much of the country was oblivious to the career Nathan Cavaleri led beyond prime-time Australia. By age 12, he found himself the centre of a bidding war between the labels of Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. By age 16 he'd toured with B.B. King as his guest, and played at the Kennedy Centre in front of The Clintons with Etta James and Bonnie Raitt.
In 2010, Nathan's battle with insomnia and anxiety was witnesses by thousands when he blacked out on a festival stage. Struggling to regain his confidence and drive he stepped away from his art with the expectation of never returning. Whilst the performing came to a halt, his song writing developed a far deeper level of expression with a diverse range of influences. This love of music offered him a similar type of therapy it had when he battled leukaemia as a child. Motivated by his passion to play and write, he stared down the fear of live performance and determined that it was time to make a record.
His upcoming EP 'Demons' stretches beyond the traditional rock, blues and roots that Cavaleri is known for. The release of the first single 'Demons' marked his 6 year rise above mental health challenges and return to the stage. 'Rising Sun' is a track in which he pays tribute to the man that landed him his first record deal and tour at age 10, Jimmy Barnes, and is an emotive step from the profoundly beautiful title track.
This will be Nathan’s first solo release since he was signed to Michael Jackson’s label in 1994 and features songs that are a culmination of the diverse life Nathan has lived. B.B.King calling Nathan “the future of blues” is definitely an appropriate quote for how he has expanded beyond his roots.
“This time around, I wanted to express more than blues would allow. Each track throughout the writing and production process conformed to no specific genre and called upon an array of my favourite artists from J.J.Cale and B.B. King to Bowie, Lana Del Ray, and Mos Def.”
Cavaleri returns after playing sell out gigs up and down the East Coast in 2018, seeing him connect intimately with new and lifetime fans through both story and song. From how his love for music deepened during his battle with leukaemia as a kid, to a hilarious encounter with Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant after playing to sixty thousand people in Zurich after Elton John. However, it's how he brings his experiences and songs into the present that gives audiences more than a shot of nostalgia.

The Beatnix
Saturday, 31 August 2019
It was February 1980, 10 months before the untimely death of John Lennon, that Australia and possibly the worlds, first tribute show THE BEATNIX was conceived and produced by Tony Dean - founding member and now owner/manager. Coming from a Show Band background, popular in the 1970s and touring Australia wide, Tony was used to playing covers including Beatles, Doobie Brothers, Beach Boys, Hollies, Bee Gees, & Eagles, all great harmony groups, plus songs directly from the top twenty hit parade but then Punk came along and it was out of the question to play that style of music. It was suggested we play more Beatles music, everybody loves The Beatles. From that simple suggestion Tony thought lets play only Beatles songs, hence the first tribute show was conceived. Originally put together for a four week season in Perth, Western Australia, the shows proved so popular that after 18 months it was decided to make the move to Sydney where the show is now based and is available to travel worldwide. The Beatnix Show includes fully authentic musical instruments identical to those used by The Beatles.

JETS PLAY JETS BIO:
It all started JETS PLAY JETS is a band formed by Grant Walmsley and Richie Lara reunited for the first time in 26 years to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of them founding the Screaming Jets.
To celebrate this milestone, the pair have formed JETS PLAY JETS, with two of Newcastle’s most respected musicians, frontman Justin Ngariki and bassist Paul Coxon round out the lineup. No strangers to the stage Ngariki and Coxon have shared the stage with the likes of silverchair, The Cult, Whitesnake, Rose Tattoo and former AC/DC vocalist Dave Evans.
JETS PLAY JETS play all the hits from the Jets’ first two internationally acclaimed albums, debut All For One, the sophomore classic Tear of Thought, as well as the iconic EP Living In England. Aussie Rock Anthems such as the ARIA chart smash hits Better, along with C’mon, Shivers, Helping Hand, Living in England, FRC, Blue Sashes, Tunnel, Starting Out and Stop the World all deliver the classic and unmistakable twin guitar assault of Walmsley and Lara.
These guys led an international charge off the back of their debut smash album, taking on the United States and Europe, touring endlessly and sharing stages with the likes of KISS, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Ugly Kid Joe, Faith No More, and many more.
Fans have said that “this combination alone is synonymous with the original Jets sound”.
“This is the way those songs are supposed to be played!”
Grant Walmsley declares “It may have been 26 years since we played together but the instant we started, it was a lightning strike right back to our glory days. We haven’t lost a thing”.

Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen
Thursday, 10 October 2019
Jon Cleary is one of music’s great anomalies. A Kent raised Englishman turned certified New Orleans music legend after gracefully inhabiting the Crescent City and everything it has to offer over the course of 30 plus years. A Grammy award winning, global touring and studio force, who has graced stages, shared rooms and gained respect from everyone from Allen Toussaint to Tom Jones, Dr. John to Bonnie Raitt, Fats Domino to Eric Clapton, Taj Mahal to BB King, even Brian May to D’Angelo. Jon Cleary quite simply embodies the sound of New Orleans, and throughout the second half of 2019, he takes that experience to stages across the globe on his massive Dyna-Mite World Tour, bolstered by the presence of his long time band, The Absolute Monster Gentlemen.
After another incredible turn at the famed New Orleans Jazz Fest in April, fans in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia will now have the chance to witness Jon and his crew take to some of the most famed venue and festival stages on the planet across this remarkable 60 date journey, featuring an eight show run at London’s famed Ronnie Scott’s, a string of European dates with longtime friend and jazz legend John Scofield and an expedition to Havana to explore the roots of Cuban music, art and culture.
Tickets for Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen’s Dyna-Mite World Tour are on sale now at www.joncleary.com
“Cleary can be an absolute monster on his own, but Cleary’s full combo R&B is as broad, deep and roiling as the Mississippi River, the combined swinging product of local keyboard tradition, Cleary’s vocal-songwriting flair for moody Seventies soul and the spunky-Meters roll of his Gentlemen” David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Wolfmother confirmed to headline a HUGE 2019 Scene & Heard Festival
After a massive 2018, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Scene & Heard couldn’t get any bigger, right?
Well, you’d be wrong because the lineup for the 2019 festival, which kicks off at Wickham Park on Sunday 10 November, has dropped overnight and it’s a doozy!
Leading the charge this year are Aussie heavy rockers Wolfmother who are fresh from a massive Splendour In The Grass gig and an international tour.
Amazing hitmaker Alex Lloyd will also be marking a milestone at this year’s festival – the 20th anniversary of his platinum-selling debut album Black The Sun – a record Alex will perform in full on the Scene & Heard stage.
The treats just keep coming, too with the 2019 bill rounded out by rockers Eskimo Joe and Even, crowd favourites Sneaky Sound System and the glorious indie power pop of Jebediahand Magic Dirt.
Wow!
To put the icing on the cake, Newcastle will also host the “Don’t Come Monday Stage” – a party zone designed to evoke only the best memories of the boiler room.
Championed this year by The Potbelleez DJ’s, the stage will feature Andy Murphy and John Course.
Scene & Heard is more than a festival. It’s about creating a connection to a time. A time before people cared about ‘likes’, and festival moments weren’t Instagram opportunities but collective memories.
Those wanting to create new memories and relive the old ones can head here to register for the pre-sale.
Members pre-sale begins Tuesday 11 June from 9am.
General public tickets are on sale Wednesday 12 June from 9am
