The Hunter Wetlands Centre hosts RIVERSONG exhibition in August
Textile artist Jan Clark uses a variety of techniques and mediums to express her spiritual connection to nature in a new exhibition at the Hunter Wetlands Centre Arts Space at Shortland in August.
The vibrant habitat of the Wetlands will form the ideal backdrop for experiencing Clark’s diverse work. Her RIVERSONG works evoke the extraordinary beauty of tiny details observed during her frequent forays into the natural world.

“Larger than Life”
An exciting collection of larger than life artworks from three local artists Janet Graham, Vanessa Turton and Catherine Kavanagh Di Gravio. All the artists have their own spin on what could be seen as a ‘larger than life’ experience.
Janet Graham has been creating ceramics for over 23 years.Inspired by nature and fuelled by the imagination Janet’s work has evolved to explore natural and imagined worlds using her highly developed hand building and wheel skills. “Handmade items let your imagination take flight” says Janet.
Vanessa Turton’s paintings employ symbols and colour to explore the meaning and narrative of her work. Some of the works in the exhibition were provoked by a response to the social and economic divide observed during a recent trip to Paris. The symbols which may at first appear somewhat whimsical hint at an underlying loaded or perhaps darker narrative.
Catherine Kavanagh Di Gravio’s paintings celebrate the larger than life disco era of the Seventies, from “impractical platform shoes” to “dazzling - flamboyant costumes and kitsch disco style”. Escapades play out in her imagined fearless and brash anti-heroine of the Era.
“Larger than Life” opens from 6pm Friday July 12 continuing until 5pm Sunday July 28.

AN IMMEASURABLE DISTANCE is a solo exhibition by Sydney based artist Emma Fielden which explores the nature of infinity, the universe and our human place in it. It began with the idea that pondering infinity might allow the mind to reach out beyond the boundaries of a confined space. The exhibition brings together The Lock-Up’s distinct architectural history as prison, a place of confinement, and Fielden’s ongoing examination of infinite and infinitesimal phenomena.
The exhibition includes installation, sculpture, performance and video works developed between 2015 and 2019. Some of these works are presented largely unaltered, activating the space in their original forms, while others have been revised in response to the site. There are also a number of new works, which have been developed expressly for this exhibition.
If we were to pose the question What is infinity? to experts across a variety of fields, we would receive a vast array of answers. Thinkers across science, mathematics, religion and philosophy would all have their own take on such a query. In Fielden’s examination of the topic, infinity is both vast and minute, it is space and time at their most grand, matter at its most infinitesimal scale, it is an endlessly divisible line, the distance between things, the distance between humans.

Murray’s Brewery loves gin so much that the craft brewer has created its own festival to honour it! The distinctive aroma and flavour of arguably the world’s most versatile spirit, gin, and its musical soul mate, jazz, will be showcased for the second year at Murray’s “Gin & Jazz Festival” across the weekend of 13/14 July.
“Most people know us for our experimental beers, but we’ve recently begun experimenting with craft spirits too – and we’re loving it! So much so that we created a festival around one of our favourites, gin,” said brewery owner, Murray Howe.
“Partnering gin with jazz creates the perfect atmosphere for some chill out time with friends and family. After all, gin, which dates back to the Dutch in the 1600’s, is known for its calming effects. And even if gin is not your thing, there’s so much going on at Murray’s this July you’re still bound to have a great time anyway.”
FREE Jazz and Rockin Blues Concerts
Free live jazz and rockin blues concerts will feature across the weekend – Rehab Brass Band will be performing Saturday 13 July. The Rehab Brass Band's roots are based on the tradition of New Orleans street marching bands and second line rhythms and will get a crowd on their feet and dancing with some down and dirty brass injected funk!
Half Nelson will take you on a midnight ride through the back alleys of New Orleans and the smoky Jazz dives of 1920's Harlem, on Sunday 14 July.
From gritty Billie Holiday, to the smooth styling of Ella Fitzgerald. Add a shot of Louis Armstrong with a dash of Fats Waller and you have the energetic cocktail that is Half Nelson. Half Nelson deliver high energy, heartfelt jazz, that will keep you entertained all afternoon.

As an expatriate Australian who has shown that she can succeed on the competitive New York jazz scene, alto and baritone saxophonist Lisa Parrott has been based there for over 25 years, working with arange of prominent bands. Performance credits are stylistically wide ranging and include Dave Brubeck, Nancy Wilson, Johnny Mandel, Cindy Blackman, Gunther Schuller, Marty Ehrlich’s Large Ensemble,Jane Ira Bloom, the Artie Shaw Orchestra, Jimmy Heath’s Big Band and the Diva Jazz Orchestra where she held down the bari sax chair from 1998-2015.
Parrott was an integral part of the creative jazz scene in Sydney from 1988 until 1995, leading and co-leading bands with bassist Cameron Undy. In 1993 in NY, the band Nude was formed along with CarlDewhurst and Louis Burdett. They toured Australia for over a year playing original harmolodic, electric jazz. Parrott also contributed to the music of Jackie Orsczacky, James Morrison, Ten Part Invention,and Paul Grabowsky’s Australian Art Orchestra.
Over the years, Parrott has been consistently recognized in the DownBeat Critics Polls and in 2016, she won the annual in the ‘Rising Star’ category for baritone saxophone and continues to poll each year.She also received Australian Arts Council grants to study with Steve Coleman (1993) and Lee Konitz (1997).
Lisa’s recording ‘Round Tripper’ received 4 stars in Downbeat, JazzTimes and a 4.5 star review on allaboutjazz.
Lisa has toured and played in all 50 states of the US and all over Europe, including major jazz clubs and festivals and Carnegie Hall. Lisa’s playing has been featured on over 30 albums as a leader and sideperson and she cites her biggest musical influences as being Bernie McGann and Ornate Coleman.

Declan Kelly was born in Sydney, Australia to an Irish father and Maori mother. Having two strong ancestral ties made it no wonder that creativity and music was running through his blood. His mother Salley, a singer also exposed Declan to the life of a musician and instruments from an early age where he took to the drums and guitar, singing to come later in his life.
During his high school years he grew up in Sydney’s Balmain where live music was abundant and a thriving scene made this village alive and a great place to grow up for a budding musician. Here he met Alex Lloyd and other musicians to form his first band The Beefs, which went on to play in bars underage and also win a number of band competitions as they had a uniqueness in playing rhythm and blues which most teenagers were unfamiliar with and performing music that was current.

Marshall and The Fro
Whether with his classic outfit ‘The Fro’, or in various other guises, Byron Shire local Marshall Okell has become one of the most enduring faces of the blues and roots festival scene in Australia, and for good reason. With an incredible work ethic and commitment to live performance, and with four excellent studio albums in his wake, Marshall has been called upon to get the party started at most bluesy festival for the past 10 or so years.
For someone so rooted in the live touring circuit it may come as a surprise that Marshall has waited for album number five to release a live recording. Recorded in iconic Byron Bay venue The Great Northern Hotel to a frothing crowd of devotees, new album ‘Live at The Backroom’ traces Okell’s story from the opening track of his 2007 debut album ‘Marshall & The Fro’, through to brand spanker ‘Taxi’.

Australian musician James Thomson is one such artist. Much of the country was oblivious to the career Nathan Cavaleri led beyond prime-time Australia. By age 12, he found himself the centre of a bidding war between the labels of Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. By age 16 he'd toured with B.B. King as his guest, and played at the Kennedy Centre in front of The Clintons with Etta James and Bonnie Raitt.
In 2010, Nathan's battle with insomnia and anxiety was witnesses by thousands when he blacked out on a festival stage. Struggling to regain his confidence and drive he stepped away from his art with the expectation of never returning. Whilst the performing came to a halt, his song writing developed a far deeper level of expression with a diverse range of influences. This love of music offered him a similar type of therapy it had when he battled leukaemia as a child. Motivated by his passion to play and write, he stared down the fear of live performance and determined that it was time to make a record.
His upcoming EP 'Demons' stretches beyond the traditional rock, blues and roots that Cavaleri is known for. The release of the first single 'Demons' marked his 6 year rise above mental health challenges and return to the stage. 'Rising Sun' is a track in which he pays tribute to the man that landed him his first record deal and tour at age 10, Jimmy Barnes, and is an emotive step from the profoundly beautiful title track.
This will be Nathan’s first solo release since he was signed to Michael Jackson’s label in 1994 and features songs that are a culmination of the diverse life Nathan has lived. B.B.King calling Nathan “the future of blues” is definitely an appropriate quote for how he has expanded beyond his roots.
“This time around, I wanted to express more than blues would allow. Each track throughout the writing and production process conformed to no specific genre and called upon an array of my favourite artists from J.J.Cale and B.B. King to Bowie, Lana Del Ray, and Mos Def.”
Cavaleri returns after playing sell out gigs up and down the East Coast in 2018, seeing him connect intimately with new and lifetime fans through both story and song. From how his love for music deepened during his battle with leukaemia as a kid, to a hilarious encounter with Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant after playing to sixty thousand people in Zurich after Elton John. However, it's how he brings his experiences and songs into the present that gives audiences more than a shot of nostalgia.

A HUGE EXHIBITION OF CHINA'S TERRACOTTA WARRIORS IS COMING TO THE NGV
It's one of two immersive exhibitions focusing on ancient and modern Chinese art heading to the Victorian gallery next winter.
Back in 1982, Melbourne played host to one of China's most important ancient artworks: a collection of statues known as The Terracotta Army. Crafted between 221–206 BCE and first discovered in the Shaanxi province in 1974, it made its international debut at the National Gallery of Victoria — and now, 37 years later, it's returning for the NGV's 2019 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series.
Dubbed Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality, the five-month exhibition will feature eight warrior figures and two life-size horses from The Terracotta Army, alongside two half-size replica bronze chariots that are each drawn by four horses. They were created during the reign of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang and were buried near his tomb more than 2200 years ago. The pieces coming to Melbourne only represent a fraction of the entire work, which numbers more than 8000 figures in total.
If you're wondering how big of a deal the statues are, the answer is very. The Terracotta Army is considered one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century and has also been described as the 'Eighth' Wonder of the World. Displaying at the NGV from May 24 to October 13, 2019, the selected pieces will be accompanied by more than 150 other ancient Chinese treasures sourced from museums and Shaanxi archaeological sites. Expect to rove your eyes over priceless gold, jade and bronze artefacts that date back more than 3000 years, charting China's artistry across the country's formative period.
Looking to the present as well as the past, the NGV's winter season will also celebrate acclaimed Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang. His work is no stranger to Australia — in 2014, Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art hosted its own showcase — however, his Melbourne exhibition will feature all new pieces. With Cai known for his large-scale installations, The Transient Landscapewill include 10,000 porcelain birds suspended in a spiral formation, in an artwork that links to The Terracotta Army. Specifically, it'll create a 3D version of a calligraphic drawing that depicts Mount Li, which is where Qin Shi Huang and his terracotta warriors were buried.
Another of Cai's new works will feature a porcelain sculpture of peonies placed in the middle of a 360-degree gunpowder, with his entire show taking inspiration from Chinese culture and philosophy. The world-renowned talent will also help design Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality, making the two concurrent exhibitions as immersive as possible.

Wolfmother confirmed to headline a HUGE 2019 Scene & Heard Festival
After a massive 2018, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Scene & Heard couldn’t get any bigger, right?
Well, you’d be wrong because the lineup for the 2019 festival, which kicks off at Wickham Park on Sunday 10 November, has dropped overnight and it’s a doozy!
Leading the charge this year are Aussie heavy rockers Wolfmother who are fresh from a massive Splendour In The Grass gig and an international tour.
Amazing hitmaker Alex Lloyd will also be marking a milestone at this year’s festival – the 20th anniversary of his platinum-selling debut album Black The Sun – a record Alex will perform in full on the Scene & Heard stage.
