Justin Ngariki and the Dastardly Bastards were great, one of the best live blues rock bands around. Great to a sax player in the line up.
Geoff Achison should be great on Sat at the Stag and Hunter (read review about him below).
What a great way to finish the weekend – Melbourne Street at The Prem at 4.30 followed by Ghost Road at The Wicko.
Carrington Bowlo has acoustic live music from 2pm. Nice place to start a Sunday down in the village.

PENNY DUNSTAN – SHADOWLANDS II
Phd Exhibition – 19 July – 4 August 2017
OPENING TOMORROW: Penny Dunstan Shadowlands II
Friday 21 JULY from 6PM
“In the Upper Hunter Valley, open-cut coal mining is transforming what was once agricultural land into unfamiliar landscapes. The trace of history has been severed by industry, to be replaced by shadowlands of our consumerism.
This PhD research exhibition is based upon walking through these hidden places and interacting in this newly manufactured world. It is a record of wayfinding through terraformed land, using drawing, photography, soils and collected artefacts.
Through these artworks, creative practice co-constitutes post-mining places by transmuting tracks into images and giving interactions form, thereby articulating a way of knowing our shadowlands and making our minescapes matter”.
- Penny Dunstan, May 2017

Rock/ Blues/ Groove – Midnight Movers combine rock n roll, blues, swamp, groovy dance beats and raspy vocals to an energetic live show. Formed in 2015, the band came together after the boys played countless gigs with each other through other bands/projects. They decided to get in a room and see what happens, the rest is history! Between them they’ve played with or alongside acts such as The Screaming Jets, Angry Anderson, The Party Boys, Wendy Matthews, The Beautiful Girls, Bonjah, Afro Moses and Nat Col and the Kings. They’ve been playing regular gigs around Newcastle and Central Coast so check out their Facebook or Soundcloud for future dates.

Geoff Achison w/ Justin Yap Band - $18 + Booking Fee
Blues/ Roots – After serving an apprenticeship with veteran bluesman Dutch Tilders, Geoff Achison released his first solo album Big Machine in 1994.
He held some popular residency’s around Melbourne most notably at The Espy and St Andrews Hotel.
In 1995 Geoff represented the MBAS in Memphis, USA winning the Albert King Award in and scoring an endorsement deal with Gibson Guitars’ acoustic division. By 1997 Geoff had relocated to London and established a presence on the UK scene.

In 1995 Geoff represented the MBAS in Memphis, USA winning the Albert King Award in and scoring an endorsement deal with Gibson Guitars’ acoustic division. By 1997 Geoff had relocated to London and established a presence on the UK scene.
To combat the difficulties of travelling internationally, Geoff expanded on his Souldiggers concept, hiring the best local musicians available whether in the USA, UK, or at home in Oz.
In Melbourne he gathered what became known internally as the ‘A-team’ featuring the legendary Mal Logan on keys, the great bassist Roger McLachlan and the incredible Gerry Pantazis on drums. Inventive and adventurous, this line-up has gained a reputation for delivering spontaneous and exciting sound-scapes within Geoff’s original compositions. “The songs are all designed to be fluid so they can take whatever turn we want on the night. To achieve this, the musicians need to play instinctively; from the heart. That’s what ‘Souldiggers’ is meant to convey”
The group has always had a home in the blues/roots scene but to call it a Blues band or even a Soul outfit (as the name suggests) is a misnomer. Certainly there is blues & soul influence at the core, but like many contemporary roots music acts, the Souldiggers transcend any specific genre.

Blues/ Soul/ Roots/ Jazz – Since releasing Let Love the Justin Yap Band has been going from strength to strength, hitting No. 1 on the Australian Blues Charts; winning Group of the Year at the Australian Blues Music Awards; and playing festivals and expanding tours around the country.
From Melbourne, Australia, the band has one foot planted firmly in the traditions of soul, funk, blues and jazz while the other moving forward creating new music branching from American roots music. The JYB is constantly exploring ideas through song writing and improvising, culminating into Let Love, the band’s most cohesive effort to date. The album also sees the addition of Ben Wicks (King Wolf, Jesse Valach Presents Blues Mountain) on bass and Cameron Smith (Blue Eyes Cry) on drums, giving the band a new focus and energy that has elevated the JYB shows to something truly special. Justin’s fiery guitar playing and tone is matched by Nardia’s vocals in intensity and resolve, with Ollie Rolfe’s virtuosity completing the circle in a band focused on creating music that means something.
Let Love was recorded onto tape at The Aviary and co-produced by Fraser Montgomery, Justin Yap and Ben Wicks. Like the band’s live shows, the album sounds warm and inviting, but also carries an attitude that comes with an acute awareness of social issues that mark most of the songs on the album and the band’s repertoire, issues that matter personally to the members of the JYB, making the music personal.

Claude Hay – 7:00pm - $12 + Booking Fee
Blues/ Rock – Hailing from the Blue Mountains near Sydney, award winning Australian solo artist Claude Hay invokes the best of stomping traditional blues, hard rock and booty-shaking funk, all delivered with slide guitar chops to burn and a vocal range to match. Claude is perhaps the world’s ultimate Do-It- Yourself musician – initially forging his live sound on the back of looping technology which allowed him to create a band vibe without the band. This approach has seen this fiercely independent artist build an audience for his music globally with the release of three award-winning home-made albums. His fourth album “Roller Coaster” released September 2016 saw him form a band, hence his song writing became unhindered from the constraints of looping which allowed him to finesse his rock-blues, come funk-hillbilly mojo to another level.

Fiona Boyes Band - $18 + Booking Fee
Country – Fiona Boyes, an Australian blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, has been recording and performing for more than 25 years, building a career that has taken her to major festivals and stages around the world. A veteran recording artist with 13 releases, Australia’s first lady of the Blues has been honoured with 7 USA Blues Music Award nominations in 5 different categories over the years, including 2 nominations in the 2016 USA Blues Music Awards – ‘Acoustic Artist of the Year’ and ‘Acoustic Album of the Year’ – for her latest release ‘Professin’ the Blues’. She’s also received more than 30 Australian music awards, spanning the blues, folk, jazz and Americana scenes. Fiona’s immersion in the wide musical and historical traditions that make up the Blues and her deep love of the art-form itself lends conviction and authenticity to her playing and song writing.
Fiona began her career as a Blues artist when she won an Australian made Maton guitar in a local coffee shop talent show. During the early years she honed her skills with all female band, The Mojos, who went on to become one of Australia’s premier blues acts, with 5 recordings to their credit. In 2000 Fiona released her debut solo recording, which won Australian Blues Album, Female Artist, and Song of the Year awards. Her international career took off in 2003 when she won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, the first woman and first non-American to be so honoured. Since then she has released numerous award winning albums and maintained a busy international touring schedule.
Equally at home on acoustic or electric guitars, her repertoire is like a Blues travelogue. Listen to her play and you’ll hear pre-war Delta slide, wailing laments, single chord Mississippi Hills grooves, intricate and beautiful finger picking, rollicking New Orleans barrelhouse, greasy Memphis soul, driving classic Chicago sounds, the country stylings of Texas Swing, and the uptown sounds of the West Coast. On her latest release – ‘Professin’ the Blues’ – Fiona digs deep into her love of acoustic blues guitar and songwriting: the roots of the Blues. As her friend and mentor, the late, great Hubert Sumlin said. ‘She’s got it! I’ve played with all of them – and she’s got it!’
Constantly touring, Fiona divides her time between Australia, Nth America and Europe. Her home-away-from-home is Portland, Oregon, as she follows the festival seasons in both hemispheres. When she is back in Australia, Fiona lives on the Clarence River in northern NSW, with her husband Steve (aka The Preacher), a social activist and Anglican priest, and between them they share the joys of five children and eight grandchildren.

Although difficult to pigeon hole, Wille and the Bandits are taking roots rock music to a new level.
Wille and the Bandits are renowned for their diverse song writing and often likened to the greats of the 70’s such as Led Zeppelin, Santana and Pink Floyd, this comparison, although bold, only scrapes the surface of the Bands influences and sound.
Wille and the Bandits are on a journey which has so far been miraculous. All achieved through hard work and a true passion for making music. Playing over 200 shows a year these guys are really tight. So please do not miss the opportunity to see one of the most impressive live acts of this generation.

Chris Cartner – Piano – with music by Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and others.
Chris Cartner was still a teenager when he was appointed Organ Scholar at Rochester Cathedral in the UK. He went on to graduate in classical piano performance at Trinity College of Music in London, before training under the expert guidance of concert pianist Professor Matthijs Verschoor at the Amsterdam Conservatoire.
After a period as repetiteur with British Youth Opera, Chris became a much sought after musician on the London circuit, embarking on a huge array of different musical projects. Since then he has worked as a solo pianist, accompanist, chamber musician and musical director in various parts of the world, and completed several hundred recital programmes in London and Amsterdam.
Since coming to Australia early in 2008, Chris has been increasingly involved in the arts industry in Sydney, working with most of the nation’s major arts organisations, including Opera Australia, Sydney Philharmonia and Sydney Chamber Choir amongst others, and has a busy diary of concert engagements. Hitting Australian shores with his Absolute Monster Gentlemen for the first time since his 2016 Grammy Award win for new album ‘GoGo Juice’, Jon Cleary has officially announced the Australian leg of his World Tour for this November.
A hot ticket on Australian shores where he has sold out everywhere from Sydney's Opera House (Legends of New Orleans tour) to The Corner Hotel and torn up festival stages across the country from Bluesfest and WOMADelaide to Wangaratta Jazz, this is a Grammy Award winning album tour not to be missed.
A respected peer of such New Orleans R&B icons as Dr. John and the late Allen Toussaint (who wrote most of the horn arrangements for GoGo Juice) Jon Cleary came to international fame through his work inthe bands of Taj Mahal, John Scofield, Dr. John and Bonnie Raitt, with Raitt unabashedly dubbing him "the ninth wonder of the world."
The Album
Working alongside Grammy Award-winning producer John Porter (Elvis Costello, Carlos Santana, B. B. King) Cleary says "Funk is the ethnic folk music of New Orleans, and I wanted to infuse 'GoGo Juice'with a sound that was true to the city I love." Watch the GoGo Juice Album Trailer here.
Thoroughly steeped in the classic New Orleans keyboard canon - from Jelly Roll Morton to Fats Domino to Art Neville, James Booker, and beyond - Cleary uses that century's worth of pianistic brilliance as a point of departure to forge his own unique and eclectic style. As heard in the widely varied grooves and textures of GoGo Juice, Cleary's sound incorporates such far-flung influences as '70s soul, gospel music, funk, Afro-Caribbean (and especially Afro-Cuban) rhythms and more. "I love New Orleans R&B, " Cleary explains. "I'm a student of it - and a fan, first and foremost. But there's little point in just going back andre-recording the old songs - although on my live solo shows, especially in New Orleans, I make a point of trying to keep the fast- disappearing tradition of the R&B pianist/singer alive by playing the old songs that are in danger of being forgotten. As for recording, however, I think the greatest New Orleans R&B records are the ones that built on what went before but also added something new. By writing new songs you get to channel all the music you absorb through your own individual set of filters - and the fun is in seeing what emerges."
The Man
Born in Kent, England to a musical family, Jon Cleary epitomizes the fanaticism and inherent single mindedness of a musician who decides that he simply wasn't born where he was supposed to be. Like Dylanto New York, infatuated with the music of New Orleans throughout his entire childhood, as soon as he was old enough to leave school, Cleary took off for the Crescent City. When his flight touched down hehad the taxi take him straight to the Maple Leaf, a funky uptown bar which then featured such New Orleans piano legends as Roosevelt Sykes and James Booker. 35 years and 8 albums later - he's now adefining part of New Orleans musical heritage.
