Chris Cain was great at the Wicko and there was a good crowd to enjoy his blues. Check out the great lineup of bands this weekend. So much to see.
Don’t forget to look up the films for the Travelling Film Festival – most are usually great and you rarely get a chance to see them anywhere else.
Also check out some big events coming up including Winter Heat (which I have enjoyed over the last few years – just get rugged up and have some hot soup and a nice red wine!!!!!!), The Newcastle Unity in Diversity Festival and other big music events with plenty of bands.
Paul McCartney has announced his Australian Tour for December - Capitol cities unfortunately no Hope Estate announced.

The Idea of North – Australia’s premier A Capella group – are coming to Newcastle to conduct vocal workshops with the local primary and secondary students. But they will also perform two concert at the Hunter Theatre Broadmeadow this Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd from 7.30pm. Tickets are just $35 and available from the Hunter School of Performing Arts webite.
The Idea of North is an ARIA award winning vocal group who formed in the 90’s when they studied music together in Canberra. Today, they are as much in demand for their vocal workshops as their seamless and good natured performances.
Their instrumentation: voice (soprano), voice (alto), voice (tenor) and voice (bass), with a little bit of vocal percussion thrown in. They have a beautifully distinct sound and style, but they cross many musical genres: jazz, folk, gospel, pop, classical, comedy – exactly what you see and hear at a concert is difficult to describe. With twelve albums in the catalogue, a significant local and international fan base, and increasingly regular local and international work, it would seem that despite the difficulty, people are getting better at describing The Idea of North to their friends. You may have heard and enjoyed the CDs (some of them award-winning), but the best stuff actually happens live and can’t be recorded onto plastic, no matter how shiny it is.

Prepare to be transported by the spectacle and drama of Les MiserablesMetropolitan Players
To celebrate 40 years of producing musical theatre for Newcastle audiences, Metropolitan Players will bring the classic Les Miserables to the Civic Theatre Newcastle in 2017. This is the longest running musical on the West End (running continuously since October 1985) and the second longest running musical in the world and a firm favourite with audiences everywhere.
Based on the Victor Hugo novel, set in early 19th century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child.
Following on from our hugely successful productions of “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Hairspray” “Mary Poppins” and “Wicked”, prepare to be transported by the spectacle and drama of Les Miserables when Metropolitan Players bring this production to life for Newcastle audiences.
A musical by Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg. Based on a novel by Victor Hugo. Music by Claude-Michel Schonberg. Lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer

Newcastle and Hunter Jazz Club Presents: Lulo Reinhardt and Bart Stenhouse Global Guitar Conversations Australian Concert Tour – July 2017
In early 2016, European gypsy guitar great Lulo Reinhardt and emerging Australian world jazz fusion multi-instrumentalist Bart Stenhouse decided to join forces for a concert tour across Australia in 2017 to explore their shared passion for various world music traditions. A mutual friend put the two in contact and the idea grew quickly from there.
In their joint Australian performances, they will be drawing from Lulo’s vast back catalogue (exploring both his dynamic Latin swing and swinging manouche material) and Bart’s past three original world jazz albums (which combine heavy influences from Spanish flamenco, North Indian classical and modern jazz traditions). Lulo and Bart will be performing in solo and duo formations as well as featuring John Maddox [bass] and Trent Benson-Dean [drums].
In early July 2017, the quartet will be playing in towns and cities from Brisbane to Melbourne. On Sunday 9th July, the quartet will be playing for the Newcastle and Hunter Jazz Club at the Adamstown Uniting Church.
Gypsy Swing and Latin Fusion from the great nephew of jazz legend Django Reinhardt meets the emerging world jazz fusion multi-instrumentalist Bart Stenhouse. Not to be missed!

MUSICA VIVA PRESENTS THE PACIFICA QUARTET
‘Nothing short of phenomenal’ – The Telegraph
Exhilarating, exuberant, virtuosic: the Pacifica Quartet have won hearts around the world for their passionate performances. On 22 June, they make a rare visit to the Newcastle Conservatorium as part of their national concert tour for Musica Viva, weaving their magic over favourites by Beethoven and Shostakovich, as well as by much loved Australian composer Nigel Westlake.
Indiana University at Bloomington, USA, is home to one of the biggest and most celebrated music departments in the world, the Jacobs School of Music. Among its faculty members are the four string players of the Pacifica Quartet, who settled there in 2012. The ensemble has climbed steadily to the top of the international chamber music tree, ever since Gramophone Magazine in 2005 picked them as “one of the five new quartets you should know about”, their image gracing the front cover. But their story goes back much further, as their cellist, Brandon Vamos, explains: indeed, some of them have been playing together since their school days.
Vamos’s parents – one of Hungarian background, the other Russian – were both string players and teachers at Oberlin College, Ohio. It was thanks to them that Vamos took to the world of chamber music.
“Simin Ganatra and Sibbi Bernhardsson, our two violinists, were both studying with my parents,” he says, “so we knew each other as teenagers, and we used to go to summer courses at music festivals together. I went away to college, but in the vacations, we’d meet, play chamber music, spend time together – and it was a dream to play in a string quartet.
“When we were finishing school, that’s basically what happened. We moved to Chicago and tried to make it work. Chamber music had really started to grow in this country at the time, quartets were forming, and it was becoming an option. In Chicago, we had a very small residency, we could almost pay the rent, and we just put all our eggs in one basket and really committed to it.” Masumi Per Rostad, their current violist, joined the quartet seven years later.
It was in 2002 that things began to accelerate. The group embarked on their first worldwide tour and were also named winners of Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award. In 2004, they made their debut at the Wigmore Hall in London and the following year released their recording of the complete Mendelssohn quartets, to high praise.
“It’s a scary thing at first because it’s much easier to take auditions and try to get a paying job,” says Vamos. “I think we were young enough and committed enough to stick out those tough early years. It’s been challenging, but really satisfying and it’s great to be able to make a living like this. Who gets to go and visit Australia two or three times in a lifetime – hopefully, more?”
Nigel Westlake’s second quartet opens the evening in Newcastle, followed by Beethoven’s final string quartet Op. 135 and Shostakovich’s Quartet No.3, “We often like to program Beethoven and Shostakovich because we’ve lived with both languages for so long,” says Vamos.
“They are two of the greatest quartet cycles – both composers wrote mammoth quartets, on so many levels, and we love all of them. The last quartet that Beethoven ever wrote has such lightness about it, and then this huge work of Shostakovich’s is full of emotion and depth – they also complement each other well. And we’re very excited about the Westlake.”
They are all looking forward to returning to Australia. “I love it,” Vamos enthuses. “Last time Simin and I took our children along, and on our days off we had so many options for things to do. I haven’t seen enough of the country yet, and this tour will be a chance for the quartet to really experience it.”
The Pacifica Quartet will perform at the Newcastle Conservatorium on Thursday, 22 June 2017 at 7:30pm. For bookings and further details, please visit www.musicaviva.com.au/ Pacifica-Quartet
