Newcastle Gig & Events 26 May 2017

In Review: Glenn Hughes and Robben Ford joined the Ginger Baker’s and Jack Bruce’s sons and Eric’s nephew to present a great night of Cream music at the amazing State Theatre last night. Glenn Hughes brought the crowed to their feet with his vocals - he puts the A in Apex musician.
Sat & Sun picks: Wicko from afternoon onwards looks good on Sat, Mick Standen on vocals is definitely worth the check out and new band Vortex at the Gal - Gallipoli Club Hamilton. As always so much on Sunday to see but Voodoo Express are well worth seeing and The Years would go well at Queens Wharf Hotel..

POIGNANT AND AWARD WINNING IMAGES…THE NIKON-WALKLEY EXHIBITION
It’s an old cliché to say a picture is worth a thousand words. But when it comes to the finalists in the prestigious Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism, it’s not just a cliché - it’s the truth.
The highest honour in Australian photojournalism, the awards recognise those photographers who have most vividly and memorably captured their subject across a range of genres, from news and sport to portraiture and photographic essays.
The work of a split second or months of preparation, the images are both evocative and insightful, portraying the story perhaps even more poignantly than the words written by the journalists, which accompanied them in print.
More than 2500 images were entered in the 2016 awards, with the judges narrowing it down to three finalists in each of the six categories before deciding upon the six winners, as well as the overall Photo of the Year.
Depending on which newspaper you read, you may have come across some of the images last year, but Newcastle and Lake Macquarie residents now have a chance to see a selection of the finalists all in one place when the Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition opens at Wallsend District Library this month.
The exhibition also provides a chance to reflect on some of the biggest stories to make headlines last year, as well as outstanding moments in sport, daily life and news, captured both in our own backyards and in the furthest corners of the globe.
Opening on April 6, the exhibition will run through until May 28, with viewing available Monday to Friday from 1pm to 8pm, Saturday from 9.30am to 2pm and on Sunday from 1.30pm to 5pm.
intouch Magazine was given a sneak peek at some of the amazing images that make up the exhibition and have been allowed to share a few of our favourites, and the stories behind them, with our readers this month.
For more information about the exhibition visit www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/Library/Whats-On

EVENT DETAILS

In a career spanning twenty- five years and at least as many recordings, Alone In Bad Company is Jeff Lang’s momentous new album which presents the most organic union of Lang’s talents and influences yet. Released through ABC Music on February 24th this year Alone In Bad Company is filled with exquisitely sung stories and melodies demonstrating that, Lang is nothing if not a lover of song. 24-
The first single from the album is 'Burnside' which immediately highlights Lang's proficiency as one of Australia's best guitarists with rapid fingerpicking and guitar work. Each song on the album is rendered such that an alternative approach is unimaginable and each time Lang steps up to solo, his hard-won style is unmistakable - fluid but with an edge-of-the-seat recklessness.
Acoustic fingerpicking, slide guitar, electric lead, banjos, mandolins and blue-eyed soul singing drop into place like puzzle pieces in a portrait conceived and executed almost entirely by the artist. Steadfast cohorts Danny McKenna and Allison Ferrier deliver on cue and master writer Don Walker shares his peerless wit on two songs, including the pointedly titled 'With You I Can Throw Away The Pills', a bitter-suite finale.
In the end, Alone In Bad Company presents one of our most inspired musicians - and songwriters - at the peak of his exceptional powers.
To celebrate the release of his new album, Lang will launch Alone In Bad Company with a national tour through March, April, May and June 2017.
Alone in Bad Company is released through ABC Music on February 24th 2017

MUSICA VIVA PRESENTS THE PACIFICA QUARTET
‘Nothing short of phenomenal’ – The Telegraph
Exhilarating, exuberant, virtuosic: the Pacifica Quartet have won hearts around the world for their passionate performances. On 22 June, they make a rare visit to the Newcastle Conservatorium as part of their national concert tour for Musica Viva, weaving their magic over favourites by Beethoven and Shostakovich, as well as by much loved Australian composer Nigel Westlake.
Indiana University at Bloomington, USA, is home to one of the biggest and most celebrated music departments in the world, the Jacobs School of Music. Among its faculty members are the four string players of the Pacifica Quartet, who settled there in 2012. The ensemble has climbed steadily to the top of the international chamber music tree, ever since Gramophone Magazine in 2005 picked them as “one of the five new quartets you should know about”, their image gracing the front cover. But their story goes back much further, as their cellist, Brandon Vamos, explains: indeed, some of them have been playing together since their school days.
Vamos’s parents – one of Hungarian background, the other Russian – were both string players and teachers at Oberlin College, Ohio. It was thanks to them that Vamos took to the world of chamber music.
“Simin Ganatra and Sibbi Bernhardsson, our two violinists, were both studying with my parents,” he says, “so we knew each other as teenagers, and we used to go to summer courses at music festivals together. I went away to college, but in the vacations, we’d meet, play chamber music, spend time together – and it was a dream to play in a string quartet.
“When we were finishing school, that’s basically what happened. We moved to Chicago and tried to make it work. Chamber music had really started to grow in this country at the time, quartets were forming, and it was becoming an option. In Chicago, we had a very small residency, we could almost pay the rent, and we just put all our eggs in one basket and really committed to it.” Masumi Per Rostad, their current violist, joined the quartet seven years later.
It was in 2002 that things began to accelerate. The group embarked on their first worldwide tour and were also named winners of Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award. In 2004, they made their debut at the Wigmore Hall in London and the following year released their recording of the complete Mendelssohn quartets, to high praise.
“It’s a scary thing at first because it’s much easier to take auditions and try to get a paying job,” says Vamos. “I think we were young enough and committed enough to stick out those tough early years. It’s been challenging, but really satisfying and it’s great to be able to make a living like this. Who gets to go and visit Australia two or three times in a lifetime – hopefully, more?”
Nigel Westlake’s second quartet opens the evening in Newcastle, followed by Beethoven’s final string quartet Op. 135 and Shostakovich’s Quartet No.3, “We often like to program Beethoven and Shostakovich because we’ve lived with both languages for so long,” says Vamos.
“They are two of the greatest quartet cycles – both composers wrote mammoth quartets, on so many levels, and we love all of them. The last quartet that Beethoven ever wrote has such lightness about it, and then this huge work of Shostakovich’s is full of emotion and depth – they also complement each other well. And we’re very excited about the Westlake.”
They are all looking forward to returning to Australia. “I love it,” Vamos enthuses. “Last time Simin and I took our children along, and on our days off we had so many options for things to do. I haven’t seen enough of the country yet, and this tour will be a chance for the quartet to really experience it.”

The Pacifica Quartet will perform at the Newcastle Conservatorium on Thursday, 22 June 2017 at 7:30pm. For bookings and further details, please visit www.musicaviva.com.au/Pacifica-Quartet
