People & Places - An Exhibition
September 30th - October 14th, 2016 | Emma's Cottage Vineyard
World class photographers David Oliver and Peter Eastway are the only two Grand- Master photographers in NSW, and they have both exhibited their work alongside the work of a whole host of professional and amateur photographers at the Upper Hunter Exhibition “People and Places.”
The show brought the world, through photography, to Gresford and not only did visitors see these incredible images up close they were also given the opportunity to talk to the photographers and find out the story behind the photographs. As major sponsors of the event, Emma's Cottage Vineyard has
been awarded the rights to exhibit 50 of these amazing photographs throughout October at their vineyard gallery in Lovedale, Hunter Valley.
David Oliver was one of the few photographers in the world to be invited back to Rwanda for the 10 year anniversary of the horrific genocide carried out in that country. The photos taken by David are amazing and confronting.
History is recorded through photography, we have all seen photos depicting breathtaking scenery, stunning wildlife and award-winning photos and People and Places shows many of these.
The Exhibition opened at Emma's Cottage Vineyards on September 30th and will continue throughout October. For more information and opening hours, call the Cellar Door on 4998 7734.

Artistic innovation on show
Trail-blazing textile artist Polly Stirling traces the history of some extraordinary creativity and innovation in Australian felt-making in a new show opening at Newcastle’s Timeless Textiles Gallery in October.
Polly is a Nimbin-based artist who discovered felt-making 25 years ago and has been at the forefront of its growth and development as an artform in Australia. Her show, A Retrospective of Felt in Australia, displays works that demonstrate the explosion of techniques, forms and inventions that characterise her collaborative practice over the years.
“I don’t know what it is about felt – it’s such a mystery,” Polly muses. “A pile of wool transforms to become a fabric with no tools but soap.”
Coming from a sewing and weaving background, Polly found felt-making expanded her creative possibilities.
“In the 1990s, there was a terrific sense of freedom to invent both techniques and felted products,” she said. “We were uninhibited by tradition because hand-made felt was just emerging.”
‘Wild Turkey Feltmakers’ was the umbrella under which Polly and her friends experimented in her studio with the exciting potential of a new material. It was a fruitful time as the friends experiments yielded innovations in their chosen artform.
“We had an exceptional few years together – especially Sachiko Kotaka, Sylvia Watts and me – pooling ideas and talents. We played with wool fiber, seeing what it would and wouldn't do. By felting wool fibre into previously constructed cloth, the resulting felted material was transformed; drapeable, lightweight & sheer, quite different from traditional felt and perfect for the subtropical environment in which it was  born. Polly and Sachiko named their new type of felt nuno, which means cloth in Japanese.
Polly has attempted to group the garments in her retrospective into different techniques – those made from yardage for those who like to sew, others laid out in a seamless shape by using a resist or pieces made using felt ties and without sewing at all.
“Felt’s metamorphosis provides seamless shape-making techniques for special garments, costumes, hats, accessories or even vessels – from small to very large,” she said. “What a wondrous capacity, transforming fluffy fibres into sturdy, unique forms.”
A Retrospective of Felt in Australia shows in Newcastle between 12 October  and 6 November 2016.  Opening night is 13 October at 6-8pm.
DANI MARTI
Still Life in Yellow, Steel and Mandarins
Exhibition dates: 6 October - 12 November 2016
Still life in yellow, steel and mandarins continues Dani Marti’s exploration of the physical, psychological and emotional boundaries around intimacy, sexuality, relationships and the role of the artist. Well-known for creating challenging portraits that delve beyond the surface of human experience, Marti uses unconventional processes and materials to capture the essence of his subject and emotional estates. In this exhibition, he presents a series of ‘still-life’ installations that read like portraits of life.
Stripped of their fabric flesh, mattress frames in Still life in yellow, steel and mandarins become skeletons imbued with metaphor. The bed – the most intimate of objects – is sculpturally transformed. Recalling the vanitastradition, the work kinetically describes the process of entropy during the course of exhibition. As the fruits embedded in the coils age over time, the changing scent becomes a trace and mnemonic trigger. The exposed grid of springs, juxtaposed against the bright fruits, brings the charged history of the mattresses together with living (and dying) objects.
Alongside this large-scale sculptural installation Marti presents The Story of I am, a new series of intricate hand-woven rope ‘canvases’, as well as the imposing Black Sun (commissioned by the 2016 Perth International Festival) and an emotionally-loaded video installation work, Notes for Bob. This moving video portrait draws the viewer into the private story of another, both intimate and challenging, and documents the need for touch and response. Through the multiple elements of portraiture and ‘still lifes’ in this exhibition, Marti describes with poignant reverence, that there is life - still.

BRUCE MATHISKE’S GUITAR LOUNGE TAKES UP RESIDENCY AT THE STAR HOTEL EVERY SUNDAY
Two local legends together at last! That’s the idea behind the Bruce Mathiske Guitar Lounge residency at the famous Star Hotel in Newcastle. Every Sunday from 4:30pm, internationally acclaimed guitar virtuoso Mathiske will take to the stage at The Star with some very special guests.
And you only need to take a quick look at some of the fine musicians Bruce has shared the stage with to get an idea of what we’re talking about.

ABOUT:Bruce Mathiske

Bruce Mathiske, described by The Sydney Morning Herald as “The Authentic Guitar Virtuoso”, grew up on a wheat farm in the Mallee of Victoria and has paved a very successful career as predominately a solo virtuoso guitarist and composer.
Bruce’s dexterity on the guitar is recognised around the world. Following Mathiske’s perfoamnce at the Edinburgh Festival, journalist Adrian Morgan wrote: “This virtuoso, is one of Australia’s musical superstars, the notes explode from both hands leaving you to wonder if there is another Mathiske in the wings. By the time he had added the didgeeridoo and wowed us with outrageous harmonics from far flung corners of his guitar, we were all his.”
His three decades of performing, recording eighteen solo albums and touring, has led to sell out concerts and worldwide acclaim.
His compositions of suites for guitar and orchestra are the culmination of a lifetime of absorbing music and sounds. In mid 2013 Mathiske entered his “retreat” and began composing a series of four Suites for guitar and orchestra. Twelve months later, he has just finished recording with The Metropolitan Orchestra at Trackdown in Fox Studios, Sydney Australia.

Voted #13 (spooky!) in the American Film Institute’s 100 Funniest Films
A classic parody of Mary Shelley’s legendary tale in stunning black-and-white (no offence). Considered writer/director Mel Brooks’s (Blazing Saddles) comedic masterpiece, it is also Brooks’s personal favourite of all his films. And a fitting tribute to the recently departed Gene Wilder, who stars as Dr. Frankenstein (“That’s pronounced Fra-nkensteen.”), the reluctant inheritor of his grandfather’s Transylvanian estate and the secret to reanimating dead bodies.
“A riotously silly spoof featuring a fantastic performance by Gene Wilder.” – Rotten Tomatoes
“Seeing the black-and-white masterpiece on the big screen with an audience is a rarity not to be missed.”  – Movieweb

Based on the true story of a potential tragedy with a happy ending, starring Oscar-frontrunner Tom Hanks as the real life pilot Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, who heroically landed a plane on New York’s Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 on board. Directed by Clint Eastwood.
“Vigorous and involving. A taut and upbeat drama. Sully is the kind of decent, upright, right-minded fellow who used to figure in movies all the time from the 1930s-1950s, a reliable Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda or Gregory Peck type of guy you could always count on to do the right thing.”   Hollywood Reporter
HELLO, MY NAME IS DORIS (M)
SUNDAY at 12 Midday Includes Light Breakfast
Sally Field makes a welcome return to the big screen in this utterly endearing and refreshingly quirky comedy-drama. A self-help seminar inspires a sixty-something woman (Field) to romantically pursue her much younger co-worker (The New Girl's Max Greenfield).

Australia’s premiere tango quintet are now supersizing to an 8 piece ‘Orquesta TĂpica’ for this special collaboration. Tángalo have continued to delight both Australian and international audiences with their signature blend of Golden-era and modern tango music. The combined forces of the enigmatic Argentine bandoneĂłn, double bass, strings, piano and vocals, make Tángalo’s sound both instantly recognisable and unlike anything else on the Australian music scene.
Tángalo is no stranger to incredible collaborations with tango maestros of the world and this next will be no exception. They have toured with Latin-grammy nominated ‘Duo Ramirez-Satorre’ in 2015, studied and performed alongside the greats in Buenos Aires in 2014 and combined forces with the wonderful vocal talents of Fabian Rodriguez in 2013.
Their special guest is Nestor Vaz, from Montivideo, Uruguay and is a bandoneonist of considerable repute. Born in 1948, Nestor has performed on the bandoneon since the age of 14, beginning in orchestras from Uruguay. With many years of collaborations under his belt (as well as a degree in geology!), Nester has dedicated a huge part of his life to the music from the Rio de La Plata region of Argentina and Uruguay and also to the music of the great Astor Piazzolla. His activities as bandoneonist, musical director and arranger have taken him on tour to a vast number of international locations: Spain, Germany, France, Mexico, Argentina, Portugal, Canada, the Untited States and even Finland.
His collaborations are too numerous to list, however amongst them are acting as arranger and musical director of the great singer Gustavo Nocetti as well as such spectacular events as Avenida Bandoneón, accompanying such tango singers as Ledo Urrutia, Alberto Rivero and Marlene Otero, argentine singers including Raúl Lavié and Eduardo Espinosa, and recording alongside many great musicians & singers of popular Uruguayan music from Rock to Candombe (the jazz of the Uruguayan street bands).
When he is not playing with ensembles such as Quinteto Imperial, Tango por dos and Tango 4, you may find him being a soloist in the Montevideo Municipal Symphonic Orchestra or first bandoneonist in the tango galas of Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra. As well as being declared ‘the most illustrious citizen of the Municpality of Fl
orida, Urugay’, he has also recently released to great acclaim a new album of original compositions entitled ‘Tango Suites’ and finished a season of ‘Hommage a Astor Piazzolla’ in Montreal, Canada.

Daniel has performed and recorded in Australia, Europe, China, Morocco, the US and Israel, and regularly collaborates with many renowned artists and ensembles including German-Gypsy guitar legend Lulo Reinhardt, world renowned Yiddish singer Karsten Troyke, Polish Australian chanteur Nadya Golski and her 101 Candles Orkestra, the multiple ARIA award winning ensemble Monsieur Camembert and Danish bass player Kenneth Dahl Knudsen amongst many others. He runs a small record label Rectify Records which produced the album ‘Koblenz’ nominated as one of the masterpieces of 2015 by Downbeat Magazine, and leads a number of ensembles including ‘Zohar’s Nigun’ and ‘The Asthmatix’ which fuse Jewish themes and Kabbalistic-inspired improvisation within the respective contemporary frameworks of jazz and electronica/hip-hop, both groups having released their debut albums in 2012 to rave reviews worldwide.
‘music transcends boundaries’
Koblenz, Downbeat Best Albums of 2015
‘The music of Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli has spawned countless imitators and revivalists the world over, but where others have used the Gypsy swing idiom as a vehicle for virtuosity Weltlinger brings a refreshing sense of innocence to bear. The violinist imbues the melodies and his sound with a lightness and joyousness that can coexist with any sadness or pensiveness implicit in a given piece.’

All their Greatest Hits Live in Concert. Wild Thing, With a Girl Like You, I Can’t Control Myself, Love is All Around plus more!
"I've been to many '60s bands' concerts, but I found The Troggs to be the most entertaining and energetic band of all." (Oldies Music Blog)
"Wild thing, you make my heart sing!"... 60's British Rock Legends THE TROGGS finally return to Australia this November to celebrate the Wild Thing's 50th Anniversary by performing all their Greatest Hits - Wild Thing, With a Girl Like You, I Can't Control Myself, Love is All Around plus More!
Teenage lust never sounded so good!" (Ultimate Classic Rock)
THE TROGGS are widely known to have inspired the age of garage and punk rock including The Ramones, Iggy Pop and The Buzzcocks.
THE TROGGS first entered the Australian charts in 1966 with "Wild Thing" going all the way to #1 knocking Frank Sinatra off the top spot! Their follow-up single "With A Girl Like You" was also a top 10 smash going to #8. Their Aussie chart suscess continued with their third single "I Cant Control Myself" (later covered by our own James Baker) reaching #13 and solidifying their place as one of the most successful British bands to come from the wave of 60's bands. They hit the charts again with "Love is all Around" which was covered by Wet Wet Wet in 1994 and spent 6 weeks at #1 in Australia (15! Weeks at #1 in the UK)... Reg Presley famously spent some of his songwriting royalties on crop circle research. THE TROGGS toured the world to sell-out audiences and were everyone's favourite Brit-rock band.
"Beat merchants turning three chords into pure gold" (Ultimate Classic Rock)
A live performance by The Troggs gig is "totally professional, they know exactly how to get the audience going." (Essentially Pop) Fans around the world are treated to the sheer energy and determination the band still possesses in order to win over any crowd. Their songbook of hits is simply meant to be enjoyed in this environment. The Troggs legend status will be confirmed when the room begins to shake and bodies start moving to all the hits you know and love from the last 50 years.
This will be an evening packed full of your favourite hit by THE TROGGS. Expect to be taken back to your teenage years in what could be your last chance to see one of the world's most legendary rock bands live. And we guarantee you, everything will most certainly be groovy.... Come and get wild with The Troggs!

Sat 10 Dec - TED MULRY GANG REUNITE FOR TED!
Belmont 16 Footers
Saturday, 10th December
Show Starts: 8.30PM
Doors Open: 7.45PM
The original lineup of the Ted Mulry Gang will play their first Newcastle show in 20 years.
Les Hall, Gary Dixon and Herm Kovac will take to the stage together for the first time in 25 years with Ted Mulry’s younger brother Steve on vocals and original AC/DC member, Mark Evans on bass.
With the passing of Ted Mulry in 2001 it is only fitting that his younger brother Steve fill his shoes. Steve sang 2 songs with the band at the Gimme Ted Benefit in 2001 and got the thumbs up from big brother.
Drummer Herm Kovac announced, “The band is excited to do some shows and we feel Steve and Mark are the perfect fit. Newcastle has always been one of our favourite cities with Les and I having lived there for some time. Our roadie Ron still lives in Belmont so he can walk to the gig”.
About Ted Mulry Gang
The band had a string of hits in the seventies with Jump In My Car hitting the number one spot forty years ago after being discovered as an album track by a Newcastle DJ.
Other hits like Darktown Strutters Ball, Crazy, My Little Girl, Jamaica Rum, Heart of Stone and many others will feature in what promises to be a an unforgettable night of Rock and Roll. The band also pays tribute to Ted by performing Julia and Falling In Love Again, which were hits for Ted as a solo artist prior to TMG.
